  • Nemophila is an all-female Japanese metal band. I react to their song called Dissension. It's a banger.

    Nemophila - "baby blue eyes" flower, "Rurikarakusa" in Japanese; grows in N-America and is appreciated in Japan (see "Hitachi Seaside Park").
    The band was formed in 2019, originally as a "session" brought together by...
    Mayu - the vocalist (ex- Lipstick band);
    Haraguchi-san - (ex- HöLDERLINS band) bass, backing vocals, was Mayu's friend and colleague from Music College;
    Tamu Murata - drums, backing vocals, one the most respected session musician in Japan (countless bands), with also her own original carrier; she's also the wife of Akira Yamaoka, musician/composer, known especially for his videogames OSTs, in particular for "Silent Hill";
    Saki (ex - "Mary's Blood" band for a decade, "Destrose", and others), she's a "young sacred monster" in J-metal) guitar, backing vocals, and...
    Hazuki (KOIAI "Dark Indigo" / Li-sa-X, Disqualia bands) - guitar, backing vocals; both, Saki and Hazuki have a lot of experience.
    Nemophila made an amazing fandom impression during the pandemic, thru TH-cam clips...
    ...so far about 50 Western/Japanese awesomely bonkers covers, and about 40 original, freakishly insane good songs (singles, EPs - including the JPURecords' Extended Edition of "Oiran", 3 albums - "Revive", "Seize The Faith", "Evolve").
    Discography, alphabetical order:
    01. ADABANA - 徒花 - "Fruitless/seedless flower"
    02. ALIVE
    03. AMA-TE-RAS (Amaterasu goddess)

    A few years ago, the ladies from Nemophila were the second band from Japan after Band-Maid to win my heart in no time at all, and they still have a big part of it today. Definitely one of the most versatile bands from the land of the rising sun, where you just don't know what they'll come up with next.... And especially now is an exciting time as one of their guitarists has left the band (Saki, with the guitar that had the cherry blossoms on it) and they are continuing as a four-piece. But after what I've just seen and heard over the last few days, I'm confident that they'll come out of this situation stronger and even more united. 🔥🤘🏻

    Nemophila are one of the bands to watch, no question. They just started in 2019 and blew up fast. As you can see from the gang vocals, they don't take themselves too seriously-Hazuki even winks. They almost seem to be enjoying a private joke, that goes "Hi, we're a bunch of cute, fun girls and we are going to rip your face off, and you are going to like it.”
    They are a supergroup, currently composed of:
    ex-Lipstick vocalist Mayu (founded the band)
    ex-Disqualia guitarist Hazuki (also plays with Lisa-X)
    ex-Hölderlins bassist Haraguchi-san, and
    ex-Soramimi drummer Murata Tamu (she is also in high demand for session work)
    Until April 2024, they were a 5-piece band. The fifth member, and actually the band-leader until she left, was ex-Mary's Blood guitarist Saki, arguably one of the top metal guitarists in the world. It remains to be seen as of this writing what directions the band and Saki, respectively, will take.
    Initially, they were just a side project, co-organized by Mayu with some help from Saki, largely to keep busy in the early days of the pandemic. They started by posting metal covers of well-known rock, pop and metal songs. Then they began posting originals, starting with “Oiran” th-cam.com/video/eyb2NtPwcxc/w-d-xo.html
    The viral reaction seems to have convinced them they were onto something potentially big, so they’ve been putting a lot more work into it, including some successful live-streams and an appearance at the annual Japanese female rock festival NAONのYAON. They tend toward hard and heavy, but also do ballads and some pop covers. Drummer Murata Tamu took time off to give birth to her son, and on her return, the rest of the bandmembers gave her a welcome back that resulted in an extremely moving moment captured on live stream: “Life” th-cam.com/video/HFnEYhbEAqg/w-d-xo.html
    After Oiran and Dissension, others to check include “Raitei”, which means “Thunder” in Japanese, and yes, they bring the thunder: th-cam.com/video/lh-dVLKP314/w-d-xo.html
    More recent drops that showcase their intensity and versatility:
    “Adabana” th-cam.com/video/AxYiOwsu6wU/w-d-xo.html
    “Style” th-cam.com/video/Aph5GON6rPc/w-d-xo.html
    (written by their bassist, Haraguchi-san)
    “Seize the Fate” th-cam.com/video/4tpgLyckVYg/w-d-xo.html
    “Rise” th-cam.com/video/rD3VMAm-9iA/w-d-xo.html
    Saki is the only one who had been with a breakout band before (Mary’s Blood). Hazuki and Murata-tamu are also considered elite musicians and have worked with a lot of other top artists. Hara-san is the youngest but is clearly a great talent and has been developing in front of our eyes. She has already written several songs for the group. And of course Mayu is quickly establishing herself as a top tier metal vocalist.
    They have toured the U.S. twice. I saw them live and they blew the roof off the place.

    For your Japan journey you should check out MAXIMUM THE HORMONE, they are VERY influential in the Japanese hard rock/metal scene. Both Nemophila's drummer, Murata Tamu and Band Maid's drummer, Akane Hirose were inspired to play by MTH's drummer Nao. In fact, Akane did not know girls were allowed to play rock drums until she saw Nao playing. Also, Hanabie (Ha-Na-Be-Eh) started out as a MTH cover band in high school. Check out their song, A.L.I.E.N.
    Btw, did you know Mongolia has rock bands? Check out The Hu and their song Wolf Totem.
    Also, did you know India has metal bands? Yes. Really. India.
    Check out the band Bloodywood and their sing Aaj(today) They sing in Hindi and English.

    Most people start with Dissention (MV, Japanese ver.) or Revive (MV) and then Adabana (MV), Rise (MV), etc.
    Here are suggestions based on Mayu's lead vocal style
    Cleans
    Raitei (Live) th-cam.com/video/6aoghIEPOYc/w-d-xo.html
    Seize the Fate (Live) th-cam.com/video/yyKGK1Se4bo/w-d-xo.html

    Cleans + Screams
    Revive (Live) th-cam.com/video/t2eMoKvsvBE/w-d-xo.html
    Rise (Live) th-cam.com/video/DaFN5J4iPLI/w-d-xo.html
    Dissention (MV) th-cam.com/video/26aMuahxz8c/w-d-xo.html
    Oiran (Live) th-cam.com/video/5qABnfChpbk/w-d-xo.html
    Adabana (MV) th-cam.com/video/AxYiOwsu6wU/w-d-xo.html
    Ama-Te-Ras (Live) th-cam.com/video/96LQimRqJgM/w-d-xo.html
    Screams
    Zen (Live) th-cam.com/video/k1yPbBRHFms/w-d-xo.html
    'Zen' (live), Oiran (live) and Dissention (MV) are some of their hardest and best songs
    'Live' is an emotional 'ballad-like' song sung in the video as a 'welcome back' to Tamu (drummer) after her maternity leave. Great song and shows a completely different side of Nemophila.
    'Ama-Te-Ras' is quite unique 'groovy metal' song and one of their best as well

    IMO, this is nowhere near their best song. Although Mayu really does have an epic scream, there was too much in the way of added FX on this song, but then it was an early track.
    A really diverse band. As well as metalcore they do thrash, punk, nu-metal, rap, old-school heavy metal, hard rock, pop, ballads and probably more stuff I forgot. All great musicians. They have performed with Hanabie in the past and they are also on friendly terms with Lovebites, Gacharic Spin, Show-Ya, Loudness and many of Japan's popular rock bands and legends.
    Earlier this year they played their 5th anniversary show at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo.
