Ok, so Hanji/Hange (depends on the subtitles) has a unknown gender in the manga. Characters always refer to Hanji in neutral pronouns like "they/them", but Isayama, the manga author, has never stated what Hanji is. In the manga Hanji could be a transgender or simply a woman that identifies as non-binary or genderless. However, in the anime Haji is actually referred as a woman and characters talk about her using female pronouns. In this episode soldiers address her as "Sir" out of respect because she's their squad leader/captain. Also, because you're already ahead you probably know already, but Erwin is not a squad leader, he is The Survey Corps Commander. Basically, the hierarchy goes like this: Erwin -Commander Captain Levi -Captain and Squad leader. Pretty much Erwin's right hand man. Mike- Squad leader and confidant of Erwin. Pretty much Erwin's left hand man. Hanji-Squad Leader & Researcher. From here there's few more squad leaders that we don't know much about. Then, this is where the foot soldiers come in under the command of the Squad Leaders. Something of note to say is that if you're a soldier under the command of one of the three most important Squad leaders I listes, you're technically above other foot soldiers with less notable Squad Leaders. For example, if you're under Hanji's squad, you're still going to fight obviously, but you would focus a lot more in helping in research tasks. If you're under Mike's leadership you're part of the elite soldiers. If you're under Levi's leadership you're not only part of the elite soldiers, you also carry out the most special and unique missions.
Proqbly one of my favorite epiosdes of season 1
