Thanks for posting. I have been camping near Alcona Dam for my entire life, and now I bring my own kids. Got my son into kayaking and I am really wanting to return a few times to kayak in the fall and winter. As my annual three week vacation in summer is not nearly enough! I just love the river near the Alcona Dam, it is beautiful. My favorite place on earth. And for me, the less people around, the better. I live in the Detroit metro area and getting Up North is what keeps me sane. I hope to one day live there year round. I found your videos while searching for river footage so I can feel a little nostalgic. Three more months until I am up there myself. I miss it. I really prefer to be alone up there, so planning a fall trip is a dream for me. Plus autumn is my favorite time of year. I have never been there during the fall. I really have to just do it one year! Thanks for the lovely video. Will be watching the next one!
Thank you for the kind comments. This is a lovely area and I understand about wanting to be there year round. My commitments keep me in the same Detroit area much of the time but I head to my property in upper Michigan as often as possible working on every other week now and soon, who knows!
Thanks for watching my friend. Yes, the area is beautiful, which I ramble on about more than a bit in the vid. I went late in the year, no bugs and considerably less people! Solitude is what I was looking for and found.
Hey Lawrence nice video! I was just exploring the Huron Manistee National Forest and I loved it. I got some great views of the Au Sable river and some beautiful trees. Definitely a place I want to go this Winter to make videos!
Glad you have had the chance to explore the area and it offers a great backdrop for some winter videos. Thanks for watching and enjoy yourself out there!
Thanks for watching and your comments. It drives me crazy when people do that and the thing is, like you said it is not hard to find dead and down wood. It only took me a few minutes to collect a good amount of dead and down wood probably no more than 100 feet from camp. At 4:18 in the video you can see what I have piled up for the fire.
I can sense this will be a fun adventure. Really enjoy seeing all your gear laid out around you on your tarp. Can I ask what lantern you are using there? Thanks for bringing us along with you on the Ausable!
+Waw Hiker Thanks for watching! As far as the tarp, I have used a tarp to sit on for years. I can take my boots off and not get dirty and hopefully have easy access to my gear. The lantern is a Coleman Micro Lantern, it sadly is no longer offered by Coleman, though you can find it on Amazon. It is a great little unit.. Light weight, puts out a good amount of light and when I run it in the vestibule of my backpacking tent, it will warm things up. It runs on the butane/propane canisters and I recently purchased a Kovea adapter that will allow me to run it on propane canisters when I am in a camp where weight does not matter.
I'm pretty sure it's illegal to cut standing timber in a National forest. You wouldn't want green wood for a fire anyway. Must be kayakers. Canoers aren't that dumb.
You might be right about the kayakers - lol. It just really ticks me off when people do that, cut live trees. All they have to do is walk a little and track down some dead and down wood. I had no problem finding what I needed.
💙 One of the best rivers to paddle. 👌

It sure is a shame people hack up the trees around the camps. Not hard to find dead standing if you look. Great video and hello from MI. Sub'd.

What did you use to film your trip ? Also you must have had an attachment for the canoe ?
