Well done my friend. I think ‘long long way to go” is my favourite track. Has a strange yet peaceful Asian inspired sound in there. I love it. Hypnotic to say the least.
Your review is spot on. Powerful album that stands above its competitors in the mid 80’s. Club tunes, deep cuts, awards, superb supporting tour. I think it sold 25 million copies. Wow. Think it beat out Invisible Touch in terms of sales. Great review Scott. Loving the channel in Connecticut
'No Jacket Required' for me is "the quintessential eighties album". On the one hand, it brings every mainstream style, mood, tempo and tone for what that decade stands for: - Rhythm/funk influenced dance-pop ("Sussudio", "Who Said I Would") - power-chords AOR ("Only You Know And I Know", "I Don't Wanna Know") - typical Collins-ish trademark atmospheric minor ambient a la "In The Air Tonight" ("Long Long Way To Go") - smooth jazz influenced soft rock ("One More Night") - North American flavored new wave ("Don't Lose My Number") - rather purified rockers ("Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore", "Inside Out") - worldbeat influenced anthem ("Take Me Home") - Beatles-esque ballad ("We Said Hello Goodbye") On the other hand, it's from a single source of one experienced producer tandem (Collins/Padgham) and a group of highly profiled studio musicians. Last but not least, it shows an artist at his performing peak, when he had already found his balance between aggressive and smooth expression, but still extremely resilient vocally. If you add the album's pure sales and the success of its respective singles, then it has generated more than 26M equivalent album sales and therefore, it's his most successful album. Since it so aptly captured the zeitgeist of the mid-1980s in its artistic aspirations, those three Grammy Awards for album, male pop and producer were only logical. Yes, PC has repeatedly said it's his least favorite outing. But this particular one made him the established and accepted freelancer he had worked to achieve for many years before, that also gave him artistic independency for the rest of his career.
I was in my late 20s in 1985 so this album was HUGE at the time and so was Phil. Everyone played this nonstop and it was a great dance tune. There’s no way you can be sad listening to it. There are no bad songs on here. Phil had The System guys put the dance grooves on Sussudio and I love The System. Listen to them. Phil loved them too. I put this CD on today and love it. This is one of my favorite Phil CDs.
The album goes along with the Miami Vice series which was made the same year. Scott also talks about the clubby sound of the album, perhaps Phil fancied himself as the English Don Johnson. And of course let's not forget "One more night" from the series. 😅
One of his best albums. This is peak Phil Collins, I think. His appearances at Live Aid and writing some of the tracks for Invisible Touch, not to mention his videos for MTV and dominating the charts.
My three favorite tracks from NJR? Let me say it this way. I cannot pick anything, because it's the diversity of styles what makes it appealing to me. The album as a whole has more appeal than any single song on it. And that means something. Whenever I put it on: just hit start and then let it run through.
Doesn’t anybody stay together anymore is certainly one of my favourites of this album too! Did you mention the song “I like the way” the UK B-side of Sussudio? Phil himself called the song "dodgy" and has cited it among his least favourite of his songs. I rather like it and would have chosen this song on the CD-version of No Jacket over We said hello, goodbye!
This is my first Phil vinyl record I bought! It is the original album cover and I saw it in a local store in NYC. I immediately grabbed it even knowing I dont have any record player at home at that time. Great album. My favorites are One More Night, Don’t Lose My Number, Who Said I Would, and Take Me Home. I like the Serious Hits version of these songs more though. Just a quick question - you mentioned you’re an engineer? That’s great to know! What kind of engineer?
Definitely one of his best albums ever, if not the best. My top 3 song from NJR: 1. Don't Lose My Number 2. Only You Know and I Know 3. Long Long Way to Go A song that I could live with not being on the album: Who Said I Would
Great channel & video! I'm really happy I stumbled across a channel like this. I've been a Phil fan for 6 years. My favourite track from No Jacket Required is I Don't Wanna Know. I love a straightforward rocker.
For future video, maybe would like to hear your thoughts on the Genesis 2007 mixes versus original versions. No jacket is great, Inside out underrated, and I'd like someday to hear those Sting and PEter vocals isolated, cause I can't hear them...
Great video! Everytime I go back to this record, it's almost too 80's for me, the production kind of gets on my nerves, but it is an 80's record! That being said, some great songs. My top 4, I'll cheat a little bit, Long Long Way and I love the way the finishes with Doesn't Anybody, Inside Out and Take Me Home. Maybe do some deep dives into the Brand X records to make the Phil content last longer
Hello, thanks for this review. I bought the vinyl of this album after I discovered Phil Collins on Genesis album (named Genesis, 1983). I listened also No jacquet required a lot. Any thoughts about the original version of the vinyl and the 2016 remaster (sound criteria)?
Hmmm I listen to both. The new one is cleaner and louder. Maybe a bit poppier, but the old one has a distinct tightness to it. I like owning both and switching between them whether I’m in the mood.
👍👍👍👍👍👍 I really like Phil Collins No Jacket Required, which is an iconic album. As for ballads, on one hand, I'm not a ballad fan. Though, I do like One More Night. Take Me Home is a great close out song. My favorite songs on No Jacket Required are Sussudio, Don't Lose My Number, and Who Said I Would. I don't see any weak songs on No Jacket Required. My passion is buying and listening to vinyl records. I have the original US pressing (1985) and the Japanese import of No Jacket Required. Yes, the original pressing has great sound quality. In my opinion, the Japanese import of No Jacket Required has a much more superb sound quality over the original US pressing. I also have the Japanese import on vinyl record, Genesis Selling England By The Pound. I have many vinyl records that are imports. I have a Bulgaria import of Genesis Abacab that's out of print, the album Abacab. Take care, Alan.
I think you gave "I Don't Wanna Know" needlessly short shrift here. Leland Sklar replayed it during his COVID sessions in July 2020 and his video is quite awesome and online here elsewhere. I would post the link but TH-cam tends to delete links in comments. According to Mr. Sklar, Daryl Stuermer wrote the music, brought a demo called "F Song" to the recording sessions. Phil liked it, changed the key to E flat, and wrote lyrics calling it "I Don't Wanna Know." Saxophone player Gary Barnacle plays a tremendous joint solo with Daryl. I always crank it when I hear that solo. It's not clear to me whether Phil actually played it live-Leland Sklar seems to remember playing it, but I haven't seen it on any set lists. "I Don't Wanna Know" was actually the B side to the "Separate Lives" single. Given Phil's improvised lyric writing style, it would not surprise me if he improvised these lyrics without having a particular meaning in mind. Daryl Stuermer would later record the song in his original key of "F" on his 1988 debut album "Steppin' Out." One of the comments to Daryl's version aptly calls it the Genesis version of a Phil Collins song. Daryl's version has a unique depth and his guitar impresario skills are on full display. That's what I know, anyway.
My favorite Phil album, I like every song... however my knit pick for the album is I wish long long way to go was on the b side. I like the song but I do think it slows the album too quickly... but that by no means ruins the album My 3 favorite songs: Don't Lose My Number (the song that pulled me into being a Phil Collins fan!) I Don't Wanna Know (should have been a single!) Only You Know and I Know I'm gonna cop out and leave off We Said Hello Goodbye lol
On the credits for Inside out(at least on Apple Music), it lists it was written by: Rutherford, Collins, Hackett, Banks. Although on Wiki there is no credits listed to the writer of the song. Do you think this was supposed to be a genesis song at some point? Maybe on ATTWT or Duke(due to the closeness of the timeline of those 4 being together)? Or do you think it’s just 4 guys getting together to write a song? I know there is an genesis EP called inside and out, but the lyrics are completely different
NO JACKET REQUIRED!!! The greatest album of the century, but i need a bloody jacket,it's extremely freezing downunder here in melbourne, maybe if i just stare at the record cover it will make me warmer😂
Well done my friend. I think ‘long long way to go” is my favourite track. Has a strange yet peaceful Asian inspired sound in there. I love it. Hypnotic to say the least.
Very true. I hear that too!!
Great track, especially with Sting and Peter Gabriel on backup vocals.
@@ThaShyGuy84just Sting.
This is my favorite Phil Collins solo album. It was also the first Phil Collins/Genesis album that I purchased.
So great!!

Favorites = Sussudio, Inside Out, Take Me Home. If I had to…I’d drop Billy.
Thanks Rick!! Much appreciated!!

- Rhythm/funk influenced dance-pop ("Sussudio", "Who Said I Would")
- power-chords AOR ("Only You Know And I Know", "I Don't Wanna Know")
- typical Collins-ish trademark atmospheric minor ambient a la "In The Air Tonight" ("Long Long Way To Go")
- smooth jazz influenced soft rock ("One More Night")
- North American flavored new wave ("Don't Lose My Number")
- rather purified rockers ("Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore", "Inside Out")
- worldbeat influenced anthem ("Take Me Home")
- Beatles-esque ballad ("We Said Hello Goodbye")
On the other hand, it's from a single source of one experienced producer tandem (Collins/Padgham) and a group of highly profiled studio musicians. Great thoughts!! Completely agree!
I played this album endlessly when it came out in '85 and I still love it - I still play it. One of my all-time favorites!
Me too!! :)

Same here!
Take me home...is iconic tune folks..one more night...classic Phil *
All so good!

Love that tune!!!
I like it as well, but “Goodbye” is a masterpiece.

Hiya scott, yeah!,great album, all songs are fantastic for me,but i must acknowledge that long long way to go brings me to tears, very sad song.
Such a special and unique tune!
Definitely one of his best albums ever, if not the best. My top 3 song from NJR:
1. Don't Lose My Number
2. Only You Know and I Know
3. Long Long Way to Go

Great list!!
Always a pleasure watching your videos you've been so helpful to me ❤
I'm so glad!
Great channel & video! I'm really happy I stumbled across a channel like this. I've been a Phil fan for 6 years. My favourite track from No Jacket Required is I Don't Wanna Know. I love a straightforward rocker.
Welcome aboard!
Prince’s 1982 album “1999” is definitely in Phil’s mojo for how he made this record. You can hear it, especially in sussudio
Need to compare those two! Great point!
The similarities end there.
Phil has cited 'Cuckoo's Nest' frequently in relation to Take Me Home.
I see yes that’s true!
For future video, maybe would like to hear your thoughts on the Genesis 2007 mixes versus original versions. No jacket is great, Inside out underrated, and I'd like someday to hear those Sting and PEter vocals isolated, cause I can't hear them...
Working on that…
Long Long way to go my favorite, also liked the way he performed it on the dance into light tour middle of the stage on the piano
So true!
Great video! Everytime I go back to this record, it's almost too 80's for me, the production kind of gets on my nerves, but it is an 80's record! That being said, some great songs. Will do! Thanks!

Japanese import of NJR would be cool!
CORRECTION: Nearly FORTY years ago.
Don't make me feel older than I already am.
Sincerely,
GenX 😂
Lol!
Incredible album. Every song is amazing.
Agree!!

My 3 favorite songs:
Don't Lose My Number (the song that pulled me into being a Phil Collins fan!)
I Don't Wanna Know (should have been a single!)
Only You Know and I Know
I'm gonna cop out and leave off We Said Hello Goodbye lol
“Hello Goodbye” is a masterpiece.

I know there is an genesis EP called inside and out, but the lyrics are completely different
Imo I think that’s wrong but I’ll have to check that.
I believe Apple Music probably attributed wrong credits for Inside Out. Inside Out is written by Phil alone.
1. Inside Out
2. Inside Out
3. Inside Out
The drums are perfect. As a drummer myself I can't help myself.
:)
Love it!
Let’s not forget “We said Hello Goodbye”.
“I don’t wanna know” is my favourite angry breakup song!
Go and listen to I Don't Care Anymore and you have a second! 😀
Great tune indeed B
NO JACKET REQUIRED!!!
The greatest album of the century, but i need a bloody jacket,it's extremely freezing downunder here in melbourne, maybe if i just stare at the record cover it will make me warmer😂
Haha!
