Another really, really nice bowl -- and a project that has sparked a dozen ideas. Now, I think I'm going to have to acquire a good boring/drilling rig. More absolutely necessary stuff for the lathe -- oh darn :-) Clyde
Thanks Clyde, I know what you mean about these must have items, sorry for tempting you. The Robert Sorby system is excellent although I have replaced the 1/2 inch drill bit with a better one. In one of Mike Waldt's videos he shows a drilling jig he made himself. I need to find a cheaper source of acrylic before doing many more of these projects. Cheers, Jim
Beautiful piece Jim, well turned and finished mate. Very interesting and effective process. Glad to see you are recovered too. Congrats on the 1000+ subs my friend, well deserved :) Take care Mike
Thanks Mike, I was very pleased with the result. It was one of those projects that I wasn't sure if it would work, now I know it works it has opened up a whole load of other possible project ideas. I will need to find some cheaper acrylic rods ! As with a lot of these things I could do it much more efficiently next time. Feeling much better thanks. Cheers, Jim
Thank you very much, glad you liked it. I was pleased with the acrylic effect but I think the shape of the bowl could have been better. All the best, Jim
Many thanks Peter, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos. I have watched loads of your videos and we obviously share a love of alternative materials and techniques. I was very pleased with the finish I achieved on the acrylic with the burnishing cream and it has certainly fired up my creative brain. I have a lot more ideas in the pipeline so please subscribe if you have not already done so. Keep creating and making! Cheers, Jim
+Peter Brown . Thanks Peter, much appreciated. Give the Milliput a try, it gives great results, just make sure you mix it it well and leave it to set overnight before finishing it. All the best, Jim
Beautiful work Jim, exceptional tool control & you have a great eye for detail. A real pleasure to watch. Thanks for sharing & hope you're on the mend. Regards ....... Geof
Hey Jim, love the finish of the wood and the shape of the bowl it really brings out that beautiful grain. And the blue and green look wonderful together as a lovely feature. It was an interesting way to see the acrylic sticks used in that manner, I’ve never seen that before. Well done.
Many thanks Harry, very glad you like it, a lot of fiddling around but the result was worth it and it has opened up a whole load of possible variations. Cheers, Jim
Thank you very much Jeff, I was pleased with how the idea worked but the final shape of the bowl could be a bit more artistic. Thanks for watching. Cheers Jim
Many thanks for subscribing and commenting, I really appreciate it. Are you Lee ? You had a great stand at UKIWS. I didn't realise you were local to me. Cheers, Jim
Brilliant!! I would never have thought to drill till the tip shows to allow air through when gluing! I will have to remember that... How slow setting is the epoxy you were using? I love the metal blue color your got when your lathe was spinning and the two colors were mixed into one... That came out beautiful. I will have to have a go at this as well, or something similar enough!! Yuval.
Hi Yuval. I'm very pleased you liked it. Sorry about the awful sound, not sure what happened there ! The epoxy resin has a 90 minute working time and takes 12 hours to set, it is incredibly strong. I will see you on Saturday. Cheers, Jim
this looks awesome! I wonder, if you glued in the whole rod, angled from the bottom center, to the top rim, and did one rod every, say, 22.5 degrees or so, then depending on your final shape you could get a ray pattern in the bowl that lets light through. your videos give me great ideas, keep it up!
Many thanks Chris. This came out much better than I expected and my head has been buzzing with variations on the idea ever since. The radiating rods idea would certainly work but some careful mathematics would need to be done before drilling. I would need to find a much less expensive source of acrylic rods before trying it as it would need a lot and you could end up with a very expensive bowl. All the best, Jim
great project I love it, just a thought as I want to make something similar for my Neice inspired by this, she is nearly 6 month old and is starting to look around and be inquisitive, I was thinking of some bigger than neice sized hand medallions hanging on string or even something on a slow motor and a light behind, instead of acrilic rods that would really test my patience would there be a clear epoxy resin mix to smear in holes without creating voids or bubbles? also is that burnishing wax food safe incase a medallion ends up in an after mouth soggy hand?
Good tip there re: piston action / vacuum prevention technique. A lovely looking finished product. Do you sell these items or have a massive display area for them hah!?
Thanks Eddy, glad you liked it. The sound went completely wrong on this video for some strange reason. I haven't worked out how to add music yet and I need to look into which music you are allowed to use. All the best, Jim
When gluing a well fitting cylinder into a hole, sometimes the glue will create a seal as you press the cylinder into place, this will compress the air ahead of it and can make it rise back out of the hole when you let it go.
I was drinking vodka whilst watching this and the lathe made me feel dizzy. Have you any suggestions for drunkards who may wander in to view a video here that may watch, drink and not be made dizzy? To be honest, a bowl of contention!
This project was really an experiment with the acrylic and wood, it was a success in that respect but I was not overly pleased with the design or shape. Probably not the best video to watch whilst drunk ! All the best, Jim
Fully cured acrylic should be safe as they make utensils from it but it is not certified food safe and would probably largely be dependent on the pigment used.
oh btw I dont know what video codex was used for this vid but the audio is seriously messed up for most of the video up untill about half way through turning 😆
Sorry about the sound Mark, it was ok while I was editing it, something happened between saving and uploading. I don't know if Burnishing cream is food safe but it is a finishing compound as opposed to a finish and most of it is buffed away in the process. It would certainly be easier to use a resin and there are water clear resins available, but I don't know how you would colour it. It would also be difficult to achieve a bubble free result, especially with wood being porous. Be very careful with which finish you use with small children and also be very careful which wood as some woods are very poisonous. All the best, Jim
+Jimson's Stuff thanks for the reply buddy, the wood Im going to use is either pine or some smallish oak offcuts? the colouring Im hoping something like food colouring as opposed to a dye, I might even go for a simple sand then mineral oil as a finish, Ive seen that mkm wood soak his end grain chopping boards in a trough of mineral oil... experimenting will begin soon ;) just got to get some clear resin, food colouring and see of there is a way get resin in without bubbles I might after this have to go with the acrylic rods anyway
+Mark Hobster . The problem with most food colouring is that it is water based and will not mix with resin. It will probably separate or form an emulsion. It would be better to find a colouring agent specific to the resin, I have added a colour to polyester and epoxy resins but it was opaque. Cheers, Jim
Hi Florencio , it is called the Robert Sorby Precision Boring System. It comes in imperial or metric and you need to get the correct size tool post for your lathe. I got mine from Stles and Bates. Here is a link www.stilesandbates.co.uk/browse.php/section/7032/level/4 Jim

Its really a beautiful bowl with the acrylic lighting it up. A bit like the old stained window effect.
thanks
James
Thank you very much, glad you liked it. I was pleased with the acrylic effect but I think the shape of the bowl could have been better. All the best, Jim
Incredible idea and wonderfully beautiful! I hope you are feeling all better. :) - Heidi
Thanks Heidi, feeling much better today, back to work tomorrow. Cheers, Jim
great work Jim. I just bought some acrylic to try something like this . turned out really well mate
Thanks mate, I was pleased with the result, I wasn't sure how the acrylic would polish but the burnishing cream worked brilliantly. Cheers, Jim
That came out beautiful. I just watched this and your Milliput videos! Very creative work Jim!
Many thanks Peter, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos. I have watched loads of your videos and we obviously share a love of alternative materials and techniques. Now, I need to try and get my hands on some of that Millput... :)
+Peter Brown . Thanks Peter, much appreciated. Give the Milliput a try, it gives great results, just make sure you mix it it well and leave it to set overnight before finishing it. All the best, Jim

Thank you very much Mark. I can’t remember what the RPM was but I would guess at 1500 to 2000
Cheers
Jim

Thank you very much Cathy. I was pleased with the effect that the acrylic rods gave but I didn’t like the shape of the bowl so much.
Cheers
Jim
Excellent Jim, Very nice,
Cheers, Harry
Many thanks Harry, very glad you like it, a lot of fiddling around but the result was worth it and it has opened up a whole load of possible variations. Cheers, Jim

indeed yes mate , i am Lee ,
+WOOD - YOU BELIEVE IT . You could sell some segmented bowl kits with an acrylic component! Cheers, Jim
Striking !!!
Thanks Martin, I was pleased with how the inlay worked but I would shape the bowl differently if I did it again. Cheers, Jim
Yet another brilliant idea for inlay :) Love the bowl and congratulations on 1k subs :)
Many thanks Ian, I'm glad you liked it. Perhaps I will see you at UKIWS, I will be there on the 18th. Cheers, Jim
I will be there all day on the Saturday and for some/most of Sunday all being well Jim! See you there :)
+Ian Maude . I will look out for you !

Thanks again Aaron, I will be selling them eventually, probably on Etsy. Cheers, Jim
I’m curious of what rpm the blank is turning when ur forming the shape?
regards
I loved it, could you tell me what wood is that?
Thank you very much. It is Sycamore Wood. Cheers, Jim
Brilliant!....A bit of music during the quiet bits might help, but otherwise love it.

Around 3:34...when you were talking about drilling the holes...what did you mean when you said you weren't creating a piston action?
