  • In this edition of Issues of Contemporary Politics with Dr. Brovkin I discuss an article by Stephen Kotkin published in Foreign Affairs May-June 2024. His views are typical of the Neocons' vision of Russia, that it is backward, that it needs technologies from the West, typical arrogant presumption of Western superiority and so on. And then I provide a short outline the way i see Russia's future and its role in world affairs.
    Dr. Brovkin is a Russian born American historian who came to the US fifty years ago, became a Harvard Professor, served as an editor of a major journal, served as a consultant for various US gov agencies and as a teacher at various Universities and schools. he is now retired and authors seven books on Russian history and politics. His lates book From Vladimir Lenin to Vladimir Putin: Russia in Search of its Identity (London: Routledge, 2023) is available from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Routledge and other platforms

    Kotkin (formerly Princeton, now Hoover) is to Russia what Snyder (Yale) is to the Ukraine. Both are academics (trending toward pseudo-academics... if they’re not already there yet) serving as blindly biased apologist-propagandists of the Conventional Wisdom of the Uniparty, the D.C. Establishment and the Western MSM. Far from providing any particularly new insights or profound analysis, they and their ilk - e.g. Michael McFaul - engage largely in academo-infotainment for the uninformed in the form of superficial public lectures, TV appearances and the like. Initially I tried to hold my nose, take them seriously, and suffer through their blather. More recently I’ve come to the conclusion that life is simply too short for this and that there is an infinite range of other, more useful things to do with one’s time than to nit-pick through their not infrequently worthless and all-too-often simply nonsensical trash. What is, however, concerning to me is the extent to which their pathetic, borderline-phony “scholarship” calls into question the once solid reputations of the institutions that they and their like-minded colleagues represent. Nowadays I really don’t take much of what is generated by the Ivies, the Ivy-Equivalents or Oxbridge very seriously unless it comes from their STEM departments or related facts-based disciplines. Everything else, in particular what we see from the social sciences, the humanities, and the “-studies” departments seems to at least be in serious danger of having been tainted, polluted, degraded or even comprehensively debased by the perverted Zeitgeist that people like Kotkin and Snyder so exquisitely embody. Sad, but that’s where many of our once-great institutions have ended up these days. And make no mistake: Since the U.S. government tends to recruit a good part of its personnel from these institutions the impact these developments are having is increasingly catastrophic. “καὶ γνώσεσθε τὴν ἀλήθειαν, καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια ἐλευθερώσει ὑμᾶς...” used to be the guiding principle of one of America's key centers of national power. Not so much anymore. Because it’s simply not compatible with the Geist of people like Kotkin, Snyder and McFaul.

      That is not true. (90 percent of Polish history is fighing the Germans, "Drang nach Osten" other Germanic invadors, The Teutonic Knights of Prussia, the Swedes, ...the Hitlerites. Poland may seem to play it both ways because germanized Russia under Romanovs wanted to end Poland and succesfully erased the Country throug partitions with Germany. Later the Soviets wanted to end Poland and collborated with Nazi Germany in 1939, together partitioned Poland again. Generally speaking Russians do not appreciate Polands frontier status and history of struggle with Germandom, Russians themselves collaborate with Germans, to the detriment of Poland. Stalin not only collaborated with Hitler on dismembering Poland (Ribentrop-Molotow agreements) but also had 20,000 Polish POW's needlessly executed in Katyn. So the Poles through history in order to survive learned to play it both ways. Now that the Anglo-Germanics and their Jews of the Neocon persuasion entered the scene Poland behaves accordingly.

    I recall taking a summer course w prof Kotkin in 2007, for which I received a b+ on the final paper. My paper argued, based on my time in China, that it would be a rival great power by 2020, and would need a new accommodating attitude from the US. The only specific criticism in red was that China would remain a regional power till at least 2030. Hindsight is 20/20, but I’d say based on geopolitical weight thrown around nowadays, I was more right than wrong. This was before I’d spent time in Russia, after which my views became much more developed. Even ‘lubricated’, my conversations in Russia (in Russian with Russians) were most helpful.

Search goolge please and see for yourself. Romanovs Russia was so aggressive towards neighbors because it was collaborating with Germany. See history of Poland, partitions of Poland by Russia together with Germany. Katherine the Great under her rule Poland was dismembered was Germanic. Later the Soviets also loved collaborating with Nazi Germany. In 1939 collaborated on the attack on Poland. Agreed on partitioning Poland according to Molotov-Ribentrop secret agreements. The Romanovs hated the Chinese, considered Oriental people in general to be inferior. Standard Germanic propaganda. Today, Putin is first to seek collaboration with Germany. @@inhcaominhpham9512 Yes Slavic people have a large admixture of Oriental. Many combinations of letters in Slavic languages are of sounds of Oriental origin "SZ' CZ, Z', Z' TRZ, CZY, S"I....many others. Ukrainians are racially the most Oriental nation in Europe, ...many are descendants of the Mongol army that stationed there for many years and later re-treated back to Mongolia. If you look at the Cephalic Index maps Ukrainians have the most round Oriental type heads in Europe, ...many to this day even look a little bit Asian. Russians on the other hand are mixed with the Nordic people from Scandinavia and have long heads, much narrower faces, many are even Redheads. Ukrainians are the most Asian nation in Europe. Orphaned children of Ghengis Chans army. Not surprising that as orphans of great warriors they fight like crazy, ...but also as orphans did not develop their own state or have a vibrant elite! To this day nobody really likes them in Europe. Neither the West nor the Russians. Not even Hitler liked them with whom the Banderites collaborated. Sometimes I think the purpose of this War is really to exterminate them! The West does not give them enough weapons to win, while Russians do not advance teritorially and end the war. The killing takes place on a fixed frontline and every day a 1000 or so Ukrainians are either killed or maimed, severly wounded.

    For EU being such a christian part of the world it was indeed a shock when the Pope agreed to same sex marriages turned my stomach.
    Then the disgraceful display of France which showed their complete disrespect to the church .
    Under the EU europe needs to change their direction or will be abandoned by the rest of the civilations
    With the worst ever in history governments in US UK & Europe along with Canada seem to be driving for self distruction.
    Our european futures are now depending on countries with great leadership like Russia .

    • @jeffreyjorgensen887
      @jeffreyjorgensen887 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @roger55es while I agree with many good points in your reply - I don't believe that the Catholic Pope has agreed to homosexual "marriage". This can be easily verified by a quick google search - he may have approved a "blessing" for couples who are homosexual (since all persons can receive a "blessing" whatever their moral state) but a "blessing" is NOT the same thing as a MARRIAGE.
      Now I can see how this may be confusing for someone unfamiliar with the technical terms "blessing" and "marriage" used in Catholic Theology. Basically the idea is that - yes homosexuality is a sin and homosexuals cannot be "married" - however as human beings the fact that two people are involved in homosexuality does not mean that they are irredeemable and cutoff from the grace of God. By blessing those involved in serious sin (whatever species of sin this may entail) the Catholic Church does not deny sin but seeks to call down the supernatural grace of God to help the persons involved in serious sin - repent and be saved. In fact this is what God does all the time - otherwise NO ONE would ever by converted and translated from a "life of sin and death" into the "Kingdom of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ."
      So for example we have St Paul teaching in Romans 5:8 that "... God demonstrates his love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
      Indeed the official teaching of the Catholic church is found in its Catechism which is on the Vatican website and teaches the following:
      "2357 ... Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered." They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved."
      Distinctions - are important - especially in theology.
      Hope this helps clarify this issue - God bless and keep you - JJJ

    Thank you Dr. B , great topic.
    If people read Marx , all three volumes, they would understand western economics was doomed to failure eventually. With US as the idyllic icon and leadership could only accelerate it's demise as an empire.
    What you recognize about the US there's no depth in this mostly manufactured culture by a corporate built country. The wealthy corporations and individuals who invested in the US industrial revolution made great profits and paid the lion share taxes to the period up until the end of WW-2.
    With them paying those taxes infrastructure and a large middle consumer class was established. Housing, rents, energy, food was in great abundance and the middle class grew. But by the 60 s the tax burden was shifting, income tax Federal and State began to grow, gasoline tax, communications tax, local county purchase taxes, sometimes call the hidden taxes while the same time corporate & certain individual tax loopholes began to develop shift the burden of the US Treasury income onto the middle and lower classes... the era of trickle down economics was into full swing by the 1980s.
    It's by no accident that the US national debt has reached $30 trillions, it's so only the bare minimum trickles down for the public, it's social fabric and infrastructure, while the financial, real estate landlord and insurance classes have boom along with the technology sector to join the other institutions of finance, real estate and insurance sectors to extract rents and price increases from the public, the government works together with these sectors to maximize profits for the wealth classes openly to steal from its own public and worldwide.
    The rehtoric to down grade Russia is especially sickening for two reasons, it's false and it's highly directed at the general public to mislead and misdirect , it should be called treason to knowingly give the public false fact to support a narrative as what was created in Ukraine.
    These statements made in article are for plunder, profit and war, made to prepare the minds of the western public for the " With us or against us" ideology of western warfare. Supremacist use every trick in the book to infect the general population with illusion of grandeur and programming necessary to take others resources for their own.
    While the Ukraine war didn't require the general public to give it's soldier loved ones it stole $100s of billions from the public at time where a great portion of the US population is struggling to stay afloat as costs keep rising which can be seen in all US major cities

    Dear Professor Brovkin,
    Why did Russia fail (relatively) to emerge as a Capitalist power but the Eastern European and Baltic countries did? And why did the Kadet party never get more than 2% votes in Elections? Sincere questions, you don’t get to ask a Harvard Professor that every day 😅

    • @vladimirbrovkin4052
      @vladimirbrovkin4052  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Russia has become a capitalist economy. And its GDP counted by parity stands at the fourth in the world. As to 2% in elections, that is somewhat misleading. In the cities the Kadets won 25 % in elections to the Constituent Assembly in November 1917. That is more (in the cities) than any other party. The SRs won because the peasants voted for them and they the peasants were the absolute majority of the population. The Bolsheviks got 15% only thanks to the votes in the army, tired of the war.
      I discuss all that in my book: The Mensheviks after October in great detail.

      I would not underestimate the influence of EU transfer funds. Eastern European countries like Poland are not true powerhouses but receive billions upon billions of Euro in subsidies to make them look strong and possibly prepare for war with Russia. Poland has been receiving 8-15 billions of Euro per year for nearly two decades! There is also an enormous pool of private speculative money that follows EU transfer funds. Russia never received such help. Eastern Europe is a bubble in essence. When you look at sums of money transferred from EU to the East, countries that border Russia received the largest per capita allocation. This is not a coincidence. Fostering and subsidizing enormous prosperity on Russia's borders is supposed to highlight western superiority and stimulate political change, color revolutions and ultimately territorial revisions.
