Being caught having an affair, marrying your mistress, leaving the Church, and writing and making money off of a book attacking the Church is not just a "stupid mistake".
The Catholic Church does offer dispensation to priests who decide they want to leave and marry rather than to do things on the sly. So: when you take the vows, after about 5-6 years as seminarian, you do it with your eyes wide open; subsequently, if you want to leave, and ask for a dispensation, it is granted. In short: Catholic priests are those priests who accept and live in chastity - not at all easy, but no need to join or remain - the Church may flounder but it will never perish entirely.

Hearing an ex-priest describe watching pornography as normal sexual expression freaks me out. Have you seen most porn? It's fairly disgraceful. I'm not religious, but must of it is the stuff of the devil. Of course it's a dangerous road to suppress sexual urges, but this guy just makes me feel icky. I think the point he was trying to make is that watching a pornography video is a lesser evil than committing an adulterous affair or committing a rape or molestation like some celibate priests have done. I don't think he advocates for watching pornography. I'm sure he advocates that people be sexual with their spouse only.

Everyone knows that in order to be a priest one should be willing to embrace celibacy sacrificially for the sake of God. Do not blame the church for your inability to remain faithful to ur commitment! I only pray that God helps you to be faithful where you are now! As far as I know being married has not stopped many men (including married pastors) from going after other women. I'm catholic and have alot priest friends that tell me they've almost all broke celibacy, alot of priest are also gay , a gay friend of mine is in a relationship with a gay catholic priest and I still believe we are nobody to judge. I admire the priest that decide to open up and say I fell in love, I broke celibacy. We live in a world where we need to stop criticizing one another and let them be. I'm in a happy relationship with a priest and I wouldn't change it for anything in this world. We had love at first sight though we were very shy untill one day he followed me on the freeway and I pulled over , he came to me and what was bound to happen long ago finally happened. It was magical and until this day the sparks are undeniable. He said he met happiness the day I walked into his life in his moments of depression.

A priest at my church did this too. Father Pat. He was a priest and one of my religious Ed teachers. I remember always seeing this woman and her daughter at church. Seemed to be a single mom. I kind of assumed she was widowed but I dont know for sure. Well end of story is that he left the church and married her and they seemed very happy.
I don't know where to start with this man. This man made a vow, refused to acknowledge it, broke it, criticized the body to which he made the vow, stating that it was impossible to keep, and justifies that through moral relativism, which is what the body teaches is a definite heresy. Yes, people are prone to sin. God did not make us perfect, but forgives us for our inadequacies. The sole reason seminary is a thing is so that this does not happen. When it does, you stop and leave. You don't continue to make the vows.

Some people are called to be monks/nuns (single people living in religious communities). Some are called to be ordained and not single. Glad that it helped! Yes, Pope Benedict recently formed what is called an 'Ordinariate' for Anglicans in Britain who wish to become Roman Catholic. Ordinariate groups are able to retain much of their Anglican Patrimony in Liturgy, Spirituality etc whilst being in full communion with the Holy See. Ordinariate Priests are also allowed to be married and have families. The Ordinariate has also now been formed in the States and Australia.
Our job is to pray for him. When he became a priest, he received a permanent mark upon his soul. He will be a priest of God forever. We just need to pray for him. The loss of the soul of a priest hurts Our Lord immensely. Some of the comments on here are terrible. What he did was obviously wrong, but we insult Our Lord by speaking in such a way about His priest instead of praying for his conversion and salvation. The real scandal is that the Roman Church will not ordained married men (except in extraordinary circumstances, i.e. married Lutheran and Anglican priests becoming Roman priests). Read the history of the Roman Catholic Church. The Roman Catholic Diocesan priesthood was a married priesthood for at least 12 centuries and it continued in many countries until the 16th century. Innocent II ( who was the Anti-Pope and came with military to take out the rightfully canonically( elected by majority of cardinals in conclave) elected Pope Anacletus II out of the Vatican and out of Rome. It was Innocent II who proclaimed that Diocesan priesthood should be celibate so that mrn couldn't have male heirs to inherit land.

I knew many religious and priests who fell in love with the nuns who taught me, and without scandal they left their call to celibacy and served the Lord through the sacrament of marriage. Celibacy is a calling, a great one if you were not called to marry. Many married people serve in the catholic church as Deacons and lay ministers. A priest is not a preacher. He is at the altar, the ark of the covenant , the mercy seat, for the miracle of the Eucharist. A life consecrated fully to the ever living joyous Lord is a gift, and a gift that should be exalted in this world. We do need holy priests. If he loved God authentically he would not reject Catholicism for the Episcopal Church. There are theological differences. Celibacy is a discipline to not marry. Priests are called to a chaste life. He should have requested release from the priesthood and he could have remained Catholic and married. His ego prevented this. He wanted to be a cleric and married. The Catholic Church does offer dispensation to priests who decide they want to leave and marry rather than to do things on the sly. So: when you take the vows, after about 5-6 years as seminarian, you do it with your eyes wide open; subsequently, if you want to leave, and ask for a dispensation, it is granted. In short: Catholic priests are those priests who accept and live in chastity - not at all easy, but no need to join or remain - the Church may flounder but it will never perish entirely.

As far as I know being married has not stopped many men (including married pastors) from going after other women. Faithfulness is never easy whether as a married or unmarried man or woman, but it is possible! God help us all!!!

I'm catholic and have alot priest friends that tell me they've almost all broke celibacy, alot of priest are also gay , a gay friend of mine is in a relationship with a gay catholic priest and I still believe we are nobody to judge. I admire the priest that decide to open up and say I fell in love, I broke celibacy. We live in a world where we need to stop criticizing one another and let them be. I'm in a happy relationship with a priest and I wouldn't change it for anything in this world. We had love at first sight though we were very shy untill one day he followed me on the freeway and I pulled over , he came to me and what was bound to happen long ago finally happened. It was magical and until this day the sparks are undeniable. He said he met happiness the day I walked into his life in his moments of depression.

A priest at my church did this too. Father Pat. He was a priest and one of my religious Ed teachers. I remember always seeing this woman and her daughter at church. Seemed to be a single mom. I kind of assumed she was widowed but I dont know for sure. Well end of story is that he left the church and married her and they seemed very happy.

I don't know where to start with this man. This man made a vow, refused to acknowledge it, broke it, criticized the body to which he made the vow, stating that it was impossible to keep, and justifies that through moral relativism, which is what the body teaches is a definite heresy. Yes, people are prone to sin. God did not make us perfect, but forgives us for our inadequacies. The sole reason seminary is a thing is so that this does not happen. When it does, you stop and leave. You don't continue to make the vows.

Innocent II ( who was the Anti-Pope and came with military to take out the rightfully canonically( elected by majority of cardinals in conclave) elected Pope Anacletus II out of the Vatican and out of Rome. It was Innocent II who proclaimed that Diocesan priesthood should be celibate so that mrn couldn't have male heirs to inherit land.

I knew many religious and priests who fell in love with the nuns who taught me, and without scandal they left their call to celibacy and served the Lord through the sacrament of marriage. Celibacy is a calling, a great one if you were not called to marry. Many married people serve in the catholic church as Deacons and lay ministers. A priest is not a preacher. He is at the altar, the ark of the covenant , the mercy seat, for the miracle of the Eucharist. A life consecrated fully to the ever living joyous Lord is a gift, and a gift that should be exalted in this world. If he loved God authentically he would not reject Catholicism for the Episcopal Church. There are theological differences. Celibacy is a discipline to not marry. Priests are called to a chaste life. He should have requested release from the priesthood and he could have remained Catholic and married. His ego prevented this. He wanted to be a cleric and married. The Catholic Church ‘rules’ that he mentions come from God. His comments are insulting and he was not a good role model of what a Catholic priest is called to be. Homosexuals have entered the Church and they will answer to God if they have not remained chaste. Holiness can be a struggle for everyone, priests and laity alike. We have been given free will to choose. That is the challenge for all of us.
