This movie is an absolute train wreck. The story was a mess, the humor sucks, the characters are bland and forgettable, (if not super annoying,) the messages and politics about equality are watered down almost to the point of non-existence, and the whole thing just reeks of being a movie that no one making it cared about, because it's made for kids. And seriously, why does Astroboy have machine guns in his butt? How is that practical? The only good things about it are the animation and the fight scenes. I can't believe Nicolas Cage wasted his time with this.
I strongly disagree that the style adapts the source material art style well... it really doesn't. As someone thats a fan of osamu tezuka, it did not do justice to the character designs. The worst part is, the original characters like Cora, dr. Stone, and the other kids are in a completely different art style than the characters that were in the original manga. It's way too obvious which ones were a Tezuka character and which ones were made for the movie
Agreed, when you adapt the world that the creator made, you'd think you'd at least try to replicate all of it rather than having generic character designs. Metropolis was able to do that, but then again, the animation team had Otomo and Rintaro.
@ArthurCMunoz yeah, also, i feel like i should bring uo the fact that in this movie they changed dr. Tenma to look more like nickolas cage and i think thats hilarious
yeah even if this movie is your only exposure to astro boy its easy to tell from looking at the character deisgns which ones originated from the manga and anime and which ones were created for the movie
As much as I respect your opinion and that I will give you I liked Dr Tenma a lot more as villain in the 2003 Astro boy series he was a lot like how he was in the manga but making him a main villain/ antagonist really just worked with his character and it made sense it also reminded me of sigma from mega man x which made it cool! and I absolutely love his badass theme music in the show so yeah I absolutely agree with you on that part
Before the 2003 anime, I always view Tenma as a crazy, bumbling idiot who treats everyone like trash. That's why I never liked that character for what an asshole he is towards his own family. The 2003 anime not only kept his characteristics form the manga, but also gave him a more serious and dengerous vibe to be carried through the show. He's kinda like Tucker from "Fullmetal Alchemist", and I'm impressed by that. Also, how could music not be badass when it's played by pipe organs!

9:04 In the original manga, there's a story where Astro has to protect the first robot president of the world, from an terrorist anti-robot group, this story-line was adapted in both the 63 and 80s animes, and in the videogame "Omega Factor". And I think is a good plot line to adapt, or to borrow elements from, like how "The Batman" did with "The Long Halloween." Seriously, a cinematic adaptation of Astro has so much potential.
I kinda liked Astro boy when I was a kid in my opinion. While you kiddos were recreating the long live the king scene from lion king I was recreating Astro boys death. Idk why
You're better off watching "Alita: Battle Angel." When Mother's Basement mentioned this in his discussion of anime movie adaptations, he noted that the world of "Astroboy" is similar to that of "Battle Angel." In terms of which version of "Battle Angel" to watch, I recommend both.
Raisorblade, are we not gonna mention how Astro Boy is literally voiced by Freddie Highmore, who later voiced Justin from “Justin and the Knights of Valour”?
I rewatched the movie recently and it was worse than I remembered. So I am rewriting it. I just feel like it didn’t capture the emotional moments well and also the plot was everywhere.
3:47 Y'know, there's a character in the Sonic movies *named* Agent Stone. Yeah it's obviously not creative but despite his last name, that character was well liked.
I remember when they announced an Astro Boy movie i was hyped (I'm a huge Astro Boy Fans). I remember watch it like everytime with the 2003 series (the one that the design, color felt like it could be an theatrical movie. And the one where Atlas voice by Greg Cipes, and Astroy Boy by Candi Milo) and i'm so hooked up with the announcement. And after watching it, it's a mediocre to me.
I used to watch this as a kid and I remembered the evil giant robot as being so cool and high-quality; same for the rest of the movie. I guess it is worse than I remember.
This movie could have been awesome. But they wasted it on a clichéd and by the numbers plot, unfunny humour, a lame villain and a tone that can't decide if wants to be a serious action adventure or comedy film.
The liar revealed story in this really annoys me especially becuase it doesn't serve anything in the rest of the plot. His "love interest" literally stops being mad at him after two minutes. Boo hoo Astro lied to me. Also why did they let Preisdent Stoen technically get away with manslaughter?
Whoever thought giving Astro Boy an actual Butt Cannon was a good Idea, should've been arrested decades ago and felt proud when he/she/or whoever gotten away with It!

Even though.this movie wasn't good, it was my introduction to this character tbh, and I did get into the original anime and manga thanks to this film, so that good I guess
Even RaisorBlade himself admitted that the only thing he liked about Astro Boy 2009 was the animation (it was only three months away from being a 2010s animated feature, and it really shows). In fact, if more people watched this review, even if they end up (rightfully) cherishing Flushed Away, I think they’ll also find out that AB really is a misrepresentation of what the franchise should be. And this is coming from someone who just bought a DVD collection of the 2003 series. Heck, it even has an Astro Boy movie (Astro Boy: Mighty Atom - Visitor of 100,000 Light Years, IGZA) that’s actually good!) And yes, as great as Studio Ghibli is (or was), with Goro Miyazaki thinking he could make better movies than his dad, I think he owes us an apology for only giving us the worst of the best like Tales from Earthsea and Earwig and the Worm.
Astroboy in the film: Has butt cannons. Chris Hansen: "Why don't take a seat right over there." Person who worked on the film who thought of that design: "Oh Sh*t!" *Tries to run away as fast as he can*
Did you know that without the anime and manga of astro boy we probably wouldn't have the Manga and anime of today. Astro boy is the grandparent or even grand-grandparent of modern anime and Manga but this film... Is awful

it seems like the writers wanted to add a bunch of politics and touch on communism, warmongering, identity politics, the problems with american elections etc but were shut down and edited out by higher ups in the studio. the story of astro boy is *supposed to be* an allegory for american politics around the time of the Vietnam war. Metro city vs surface represents US/Vietnam and the president represents all of the problems with Truman, Eisenhower, Roosevelt, but mostly Lyndon B Johnson. thats where some of the plot holes and problems with the characters you are seeing are coming from. and sure, the themes are super on the nose and tone deaf, but the writing is attempting to tell a political story and touch on multiple themes about the mistakes of the USA at a dumbed down level for kids, so of course there are tone problems.
1:41 Ewwww, looks like it was made for a bad 3-D movie, not James Cameron’s Avatar 3-D, but BASICALLY CHEAP ASS Robert Rodriguez Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D!!! #notmyrodrick
I don’t remember anything from this movie except the first 30-ish mins, and the last 20-ish. I only remember Nicholas Cages voice and and completely forgot Samuel L. Jackson and Bill Nighy were even in this. Im not gonna lie, i was also one of those kids who watched this when it came it, got it on dvd, and had no idea it was adapted from a manga until I was in my mid to late teens😂
(6:41 to 6:48) - Not gonna lie, despite me being in the age of almost 15, I thought the villain pretending to do baseball as he hit Astro Boy with a building was kinda funny.
Basically: The entire Project of Metrocity, the grand Capital of the country, it's to generate the first Atómic Fusión energy generator in the World. Using an extraterrestrial source of energy called "The Blue Core." A strange, and boundlessly powerfull gemstone capable of giving energy to two countries for centuries. If not for eternity. But very few were capable of creating a way to harvest the energy of this core, as if the mschines of men were unworthy from such gift. And the Dr Tenma and Elephant were in charge of propperly create a reactor to do it, but Tenma was so enthrilled thst he neglected Tobio, and tragedy ensued... But Stone, being the selfish and merciless politician that he is, didn't gave Tenma the time to process his grief, and pressured him and the crew to finish the reactor soon... and to spite him... he grabbed a prototype Belic Automaton, a favorite relic of Stone, and even a compressed Atomic Fusion reactor, and used them for finishing his little passion project that he had with Elephant. Creating the First Super Robot in the world. One that wouldn't be binded to the Laws of Robotics and be completely free. Being pair to humanity. And from that mixtura born of dispair and spite, Atom (the other name to Astro) was born. Being literally the only worthy to wield the miraculous powers of the Blue Core. Since he was built for that purpose, as he has a heart worthy of being the host of said Core.
*4:05* l-l understood that reference 😅 But yeah, l do agree with you, man. And l'm glad to see you tried to look on a positive note to this movie, even with your reccord rants about all the movies.. And that comment you've showed, yeah screw her/him! NO ADULT IS GONNA BE ON HIS SIDE!! Also have you heard of the news? Despite the failure, Astro Boy The Movie is gonna get remastered, but with new voices from what l've heard. I have no clue if you're interested, but l would give a look still.
Not assigning blame on Stone for his son’s death is a very mature and sane response, but neither Tenma nor Nicholas Cage’s best roles are known for mature and sane responses. I don’t need him to be the main antagonist but at minimum the previous iterations of Tenma would be plotting some elaborate revenge scheme on the side rather than passively letting the idiot rant about an election at him while he's still in mourning.
While the studio was good with the animation at the time, they really needed better directors and writers. While I thought the TMNT was decent, I find this film just mediocre, but I respect your opinion.
Why not just adapt a storyline from the manga and make the dad the villain. You don't even have to change the beginning of the movie. Just take out the president guy, change the setting to be more grounded like the source material, and get rid of the red pill blue pill thing.
I wouldn’t call it “bad” but the manga and animes are way better and I probably wouldn’t care about the movie if I wasn’t such a big fan of those. Okay. I wasn’t the only one not thrilled with Nicolas Cage’s acting. He is clearly NOT a voice actor. Your comment on The Surface; Since Metro City floats over the Earth, you can figure it doesn’t belong to any specific country and therefore has its own president. Making “The surface” Earth but why does he think going to war with them will get him re-elected I dunno. The villain does suck though. I’ll give you that. Oh, and the butt guns are in the manga and at least two of the animes so you can’t blame Imagi for that one
If I had to guess, I think President Stone was written the way he was a kid-friendly commentary on the Bush Administration and the Iraq War. Take for instance he says "We're in an Arms Race with the Surface World." seems like a kid friendly wink wink nod nod to "WMDs in Iraq" So I think they sort of like went the route of the SW prequels and tried to make a commentary on Bush or maybe Cheney, though it was still poorly executed
If that is the case that would be really interesting because one AstroBoy manga, Pluto by Naoki Urasawa actually does very directly handle commentary on the Iraq war. I definitely wouldn't call it kid friendly at all, but I think it's the best AstroBoy adaption's been made, so it would be interesting if they were a bit inspired by it. (But then they failed so miserably considering Pluto's a masterpiece)
Wow this villain is boring! All he does is talking about re-election. He's not smart like Jafar or entertaining and cool like Hades. Heck even the villain in Big hero 6 is more intimidating and proactive than this guy. He uses Hiro's robots to kill him and execute his plan. The president is talking about the same thing over and over. That's not scary or interresting 😐
Yep another reason for why I think Atlas and Dr Tenma from the 2003 anime are better villains because at least they are actually deep and complex characters.President Stone is literally A nothing he is nothing but bland boring and doesn’t really have any personality but this is just my thought.
A proper term for Astro Boy in this movie would be Gary-Stu not Mary-Sue as that is the male equivalent of Mary-Sue. I know it is the same thing but I just had to get that off my chest. Also yes this movie in terms of story is Dog-Shit. If Tezuka saw this movie when it was out that would've caused his death and not stomach cancer just by seeing this film or probably going blind seeing this just because of how bad the story is.

@@knightryder11 Ah, I see. Thank you.
@@DanGamingFan2406 yes and your welcome
Okay, but Nicholas Cage's defense, he's only ever been able to act with his face.
The 2003 Astro Boy series was the best adaptation in my opinion, it's just a shame that the dubbing changes and removes a lot from the original cut
I’ve seen Flushed Away. It’s not bad but I understand why it’s considered Aardman’s weakest film. Still enjoyable.
Honestly, his friends must not be so friendly after all to tell people that Flushed Away (and David Bowers’ other films (except for The Long Haul 2017, that’s the only DB film that deserves to be hated. In fact, minus the books, Diary of a Wimpy Kid is now a shell of its former self with animated remakes of good live-action Disney/Fox movies and sequels to Rodrick Rules 2022 that has potential to be an improvement but even bigger potential to suck) in the past, Balto and The Prince of Egypt) sucks (let me guess, Buc Reviewers was one of them. And who knows? Despite never giving his opinion on it (AniMat did say at the start of his review of Boss Baby 2 that the original and Shark Tale are his least favourite DreamWorks Animation films and one of them he gave a 4/10, so I think he’d end up thinking of FA as a 5/10 with a 3/10 for the story, 7/10 for the animation and a 5/10 for the characters/overall movie which I think he’ll review a year later. In fact, I’m thinking about making a predicted transcript the size of other recent reviews from that guy in the 2020s if I can catch up!), I think he too will mostly agree that they don’t see why anyone would consider it to be underrated).
Yeah, i loved that movie as a kid and still do today!
Too bad all the attention Flushed Away got went down the toilet
The male equivelant of mary sue is gary stu, just so you know.
I agryd
If there was one positive I got out of this movie, it's that I got to riff on it at a sleepover with friends. That made it better!
I wish Dr. Tenma was the villain like he is in some versions of Astro Boy, like let Nicholas Cage go crazy with the role
Maybe Astro Boy 2 would have made Dr. Tenma go a lil' insane…
I would love Nicolas Cage to do Dr. Tenma crazy mad scientist voice!
I kinda liked Astro boy when I was a kid in my opinion. While you kiddos were recreating the long live the king scene from lion king I was recreating Astro boys death. Idk why
Fun fact: The robot's name is the Peacekeeper, which is Hiccup's personality.🙂😘🥰🙂
The main villain looks kinda like he could be related to Anton Ego from Ratatouille O.o
You're better off watching "Alita: Battle Angel." When Mother's Basement mentioned this in his discussion of anime movie adaptations, he noted that the world of "Astroboy" is similar to that of "Battle Angel." In terms of which version of "Battle Angel" to watch, I recommend both.
Yeah! Both anime and live action were good (if not, great). I'm just sad about the death of Alita's boyfriend
i had a dvd of the tmnt movie when i was younger and i still have it to this day
Raisorblade, are we not gonna mention how Astro Boy is literally voiced by Freddie Highmore, who later voiced Justin from “Justin and the Knights of Valour”?

I just feel like it didn’t capture the emotional moments well and also the plot was everywhere.

Y'know, there's a character in the Sonic movies *named* Agent Stone. Yeah it's obviously not creative but despite his last name, that character was well liked.
Astro boy is okay, I actually remember getting a toy in my happy meal when the film was about to be release in October 2009.
What's that suppose to mean?
Robots from Blue Sky is basically Astro Boy but good.
The liar revealed story in this really annoys me especially becuase it doesn't serve anything in the rest of the plot. His "love interest" literally stops being mad at him after two minutes. Boo hoo Astro lied to me.
Also why did they let Preisdent Stoen technically get away with manslaughter?
Didn't you hear about that one movie where Raisor mentioned the exactly situation? "Justin"?

Even though.this movie wasn't good, it was my introduction to this character tbh, and I did get into the original anime and manga thanks to this film, so that good I guess
What? Flushed Away? Nah, it's an okay film. I recommend it.
At least this looks better than Earwig And The Worm.
Also, I saw bits and pieces of Flushed Away. It was ok.
Heck, it even has an Astro Boy movie (Astro Boy: Mighty Atom - Visitor of 100,000 Light Years, IGZA) that’s actually good!)
And yes, as great as Studio Ghibli is (or was), with Goro Miyazaki thinking he could make better movies than his dad, I think he owes us an apology for only giving us the worst of the best like Tales from Earthsea and Earwig and the Worm.
Yeah I can absolutely agree that I like Dr Tenma as a villain a lot more than the boring president stone
Astroboy in the film: Has butt cannons.
Chris Hansen: "Why don't take a seat right over there."
Person who worked on the film who thought of that design: "Oh Sh*t!" *Tries to run away as fast as he can*

it seems like the writers wanted to add a bunch of politics and touch on communism, warmongering, identity politics, the problems with american elections etc but were shut down and edited out by higher ups in the studio. the story of astro boy is *supposed to be* an allegory for american politics around the time of the Vietnam war.

The first half of Astro Boy is good, but it fell apart toward the climax.
The villian sounds like a weaker version of President Snow from Hunger Games 🤣
But yeah, this movie doesn't know what it wanted to be

Hear me out... I think the idea of the Blue and Red Core can work.
Basically: The entire Project of Metrocity, the grand Capital of the country, it's to generate the first Atómic Fusión energy generator in the World. Using an extraterrestrial source of energy called "The Blue Core."
A strange, and boundlessly powerfull gemstone capable of giving energy to two countries for centuries.
I watched the original for a few Months. It was a long Review.

But yeah, l do agree with you, man. And l'm glad to see you tried to look on a positive note to this movie, even with your reccord rants about all the movies..

"Amazing. Every word of what you just said... was wrong."
While the studio was good with the animation at the time, they really needed better directors and writers. While I thought the TMNT was decent, I find this film just mediocre, but I respect your opinion.

Yeah, Astro is not a girl.
He's Astro 'BOY,' not Astro girl.

The secret level mega man is going to be better than the Astro Boy movie
You should review the long haul
wait metrossity is in this movie.
The DuckTales reboot did a better adaptation.
No because the original astro boy anime and it’s three anime adaptations are all amazing. The movie is not so much.
