The Fish Files: Ropefish, Reedfish or Snakefish. Complete care & info guide!

  • It's been a while, but I've finally made time for a Fish Files on the oddball fish: the Reedfish.
These fish are great for the medium to large community fish tank, as long as you give them places to hide using aquatic plants, rocks and wood. Just make sure they can't get out!
The fish tank our Ropefish live in is 8ft and holds around 1000 litres, it's planted with a mixture of mostly Anubias and Vallisneria species. This aquarium is lit by two Kessil LED lights and one Tropical Marine Centre reef photon. It's filtered by two Fluval FX6s which do such a great job.
Watch the video to find out more!

Before TH-cam, I kept two in a tank with African Ciclids, and a Blue Crawfish. Used to get out a lot. It was a decent fall to the carpet. I would imagine the equivalent of jumping from a 6 story building 🤷‍♂️

I had a ropefish back in the day. I kept him in my Mbuna tank. The Mbuna seemed pretty indifferent to him and there were lots of rocks for him to hide in. I often fed floating pellets and he would come up to the top edge and scoop them up against the glass. I also fed bloodworms, sometimes after turning out the lights to give him a good chance to feed on those.
