The Fish Files: L046 Zebra Pleco

  • I absolutely love these fish! I really do think that once I have my fish garage up and running I will get a group of these!
    Anyway, today in fish files we are covering Hypancistrus zebra: the Zebra Pleco! Maybe not best suited for the community aquarium or the fully planted aquascape, but they are definitely an awesome fish that is worth the time needed to succeed with them.
    What fish would you want me to cover next in fish files?

    could you do a video about the ecological impact of the aquarium hobby. It would be interesting to hear what you have to say about wild caught fish because I feel a bit uncertain about it.

    • @FishShopMatt
      @FishShopMatt  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definitely, it's a weird subject to be honest and can be looked at in many different ways.
      Personally my outlook in short is that exporting fish from the wild done properly and sustainably is a good thing for those areas. Without the fish to export the river becomes worthless and only really useful for food. This is why we end up with big invasive fish being introduced to areas and killing of native populations of fish which will never be seen again.
      But that's one small part of a massive debate so I will definitely put it on my list of videos to do.

    One of the reason's they do still command a high price is even though they will breed in captivity they produce very small clutches, if you get 15 babies from a pair that you have paid £100 each for and looked after for the 2+ years that it takes them to reach maturity, then provided the right conditions for them to breed, then brought up the babies to the 2''' size that is a lot of time and effort compared to say breeding Bristlenose plecs hence the higher price.

    Hi Matt
    Very good video and very informative about the situation of L046 (Hypancistrus zebra). I currently work monitoring the ichthyofauna of the Xingu River and I can say that I have seen them in the wild.
    And yes, it is protected by Brazilian legislation, which does not allow the collection and export of specimens. And even less the reproduction in captivity in Brazil, unless it is for research (as is the case here since I work in partnership with LAQUAX - the ornamental species laboratory of the Xingu).
    And I can say that the Xingu substrate is not very similar to what I see in nature LOL. Imagine that almost all substrate (gravel) here has a more yellowish tint. But of course, somewhere in the Xingu may be more similar to the commercialized product.
    Keep up the good work!

      It is indeed not difficult to get them to reproduce, but growing up to sales length (4cm) takes me more than a year. The number of youngsters is also not that big (with me between 6 and 16). Here in the Netherlands they are for sale in stores from 99 to 159 euros, but if you search on the internet you will probably find a better price at hobby growers

      Hypancistrus zebra largely eats algaes in the wild and bryozoa, along with detritus. So no vegetables wont work. But they also aren't carnivores in the way many people think of it so I wouldn't label as omnivorous either. There is some reasonable literature on the genus, for the diet of Hypancistrus zebra though you'll need Google translate as it's in errrr Spanish I think.
