      What about depth ? I think it's what makes a song sounds professional.

    Straight to the point and very informative and well presented. This video has more actual content in less than eight minutes than most half hour videos I've seen.

    I'd say that the secret sauce to a great low end mix is phase alignment, but hey, that's just me. Side-chain often seems like a band-aid on a problem that could be solved with other tools.

      Great point! Totally agree phase alignment is critical and a great idea for a full video! There are so many tips to help with low end ultimately only so much I can fit in and quickly explain in a short video!😅

    Best thing I have found with a small speaker system is to have a pair of headphones. I don't really like mixing on headphones, but I have found a pair (not particularly good ones) that really reveal when the low end is getting out of hand in a way that small nearfields do not. Also with saturation, you will have an actual level increase when you drive into it. Just got to make sure you level match so you have done the saturation without a dB increase in the channel volume.

      Totally! Great points on headphones! The DT 990 are a great option for if you want detailed low end but curious on the headphones you’re talking about. Also totally spot on with level matching for sure!🙏

      @@RecordingArtsCanada They're currently out in my little house truck studio, I'll check out what model they are and get back to you. But they are definitely Phillips and cheap consumer grade and (only just) enclosed ear phones. They were the cuing headphones from the radio station I run and had been kicked around with the head band broken and held together with gaff tape.
      Well on their way to being discarded and replaced with something at least newer, until one day I was having some problems with a track that had a very hard to control dubstep bass line and I tried listening with them, while I was checking the mix on the radio studio audio system.
      They were so revealing of the low end I immediately took them home, fixed the band a little better using some hot melt glue and now they are my monitoring secret weapon. Have never had a mix with an overbearing low end since using them. They are also pretty good for setting vox levels too :)

    Im horrible about over doing my bass as I like the bottom end so much. Also a great plugin for different side chaining effect is Devious machines duck plugin.

    Soothe 2 acts a little different than a traditional compressor as it acts more like a dynamic Eq when u sidechain, so the volume of the bass isn't ducking like a traditional Compressor, rather the frequency of the kick is carved out the bass. You are doing a great job Darianna, and i love the videos, very informative!

    • @RecordingArtsCanada
      @RecordingArtsCanada  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So technically in terms of voltage you would also have a reduction in signal, especially in the low end. Yes you are right! Soothe 2 is a resonance suppressor and also a super effective ducking tool(my favourite)! Thanks so much for the feedback and for watching🙏😊

    Can you do one, on re-amping; or one that involves guitar amplifier setups. Such as true stereo cabinet miking, versus Wet-Dry recording options?

    This is awful lot of very good theory. Now it‘s up to me to apply it to my mix, which for me is a bit more difficult. The „How to“ is the issue. I mean I have the Soothe 2-plugin, but so far I can only use its presets, but don‘t know how to apply side-chaining with it. But you recommended a video about side-chaining which I‘ll go through now. Thanks very much for these valuable tips! 💪🏻👏🏻👍🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

      Oh ok got it! On the middle left of soothe 2 there’s a section that says side chain. You can use the power icon to enable it. Just select the track you want to use to trigger the side chain, for this example let’s say kick. On the kick you then add a send, you will send the signal to a not in use bus. I usually rename the bus “Key ____”. In soothe at the top left there’s a key icon if not in use it will say “no key input”. Select your newly renamed bus “Key ____” and you should be good to go! If you feel like it’s not picking up make sure your send volume is at nominal (0db). Hope that’s clear enough to help!😅
