  • I plan on installing 3 DIY faux skylights in my golf simulator, step 1 was to explore how the commercially available options work. The one I bought from Amazon was $270 and consists of probably less than $20 in materials.
This is the velvet I'm using for the boxes: amzn.to/4dZFedA

I genuinely wish I had 1/100th of your skills. You’re the kind of person I wish lived in my neighborhood. I’d be the guy coming by to help/be your assistant just so I could stand under the learning tree.

Thanks. Being the assistant is definitely a good way to learn skills. However, I think the biggest thing about learning new skills is just not being afraid to fail... it will definitely happen, but eventually you'll get it right and you'll learn along the way.

Every winter I try and built something like this and I always fail. This looks amazing and not too difficult.

Wouldn't you be better off putting some kind of broad light diffusion in front of the light source to spread it out evenly, and then having a more highly reflective colour (eg light grey) felt on the top and sides? Seems like you're deliberately absorbing most of the light you're generating.

I'm just kind of following the lead of off the shelf product. I think the issue with highly reflective top/sides is that it gives away the finite nature of the box.
