Top 5 Biggest Kamado Beginners Mistakes - Kamado Joe 101
th-cam.com/video/Ixk7zhZcapA/w-d-xo.html
My beginner mistake was starting a big ole hot fire and then being unable to get the thing to cool down so I could cook. Had no idea it would heat up to 400+ in 30 minutes.
That was last week, now I'm an expert. 😂😂😂
We all have been there! It can happen so fast when you get busy. 😀
Outstanding video & great tips! Very informative.
Thank you so much!
Thank you for putting this up.
You are welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the great tips!
You are welcome! Let me know if you have any other video topics that you would want to see.
Really nice video. Thank you! Learned a lot.
Thank you so much and glad it was helpful.
Thankyou for this, Just bought my first one a Kamodo jr I"m 70 yrs old so be patient with me lol
That’s awesome, congrats. I’m here if ya need anything!
Me too only difference I’m 72. Who said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.
Great tips and overall great videos. Subscribed. Good to see another Oklahoma guy on TH-cam.
Thank you so much, glad you found them helpful. Also, great to connect with fellow Okies.
Great tips, doing my first test run right now. Would love to have a 2nd Kamado Joe.
Thank you so much. It's always fun to add more to the backyard patio.
Hey there! New sub here! I am about to try a Kamado grill for the first time and I was searching for some advice on it and your channel popped up! Thanks for informing us of the common mistakes and I feel more prepared to try my grill for the first time! Any other advice for a first timer?
Thanks for all the help and I look forward to more videos!
Hey Hey! Thanks for watching the channel. I have a a few other videos that will help you get started. Do you already have a Kamado or looking to buy one? First, I would decide on what your budget is and that will be a good starting point and how many people you plan on cooking for. If you don't want to break the bank starting with a Joe Junior or Kettle Joe might be worth exploring. Both under $500!

Great tips and reminders for the newbies and the seasoned kamado owners. Perhaps not a tip that is relevant to the idea of this video, but I tell people to get in the practice of burping their grill every time they open the dome. Flashbacks are nasty. Thanks Scott!
Thanks Brian! That is a great tip and reminder.
What does burping mean
@@Vusace777backfires When you open the dome, lot of oxygen is coming into the dome, this can cause big fire flames (Backfires).
Yessir!! Can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to go out and cook some pizzas on the kamado and my heat deflectors are still dirty from my low and slow cooks 🤦♂️. So now I have to do a high heat burn and smoke out my whole neighborhood with an awful smell and cook the pizzas indoors 😂. Part of me wants to have an extra set of deflectors on hand just for high heat cooks like pizza or even high temp baking so they are always clean. That has been a mistake I make over and over and over lol. Thanks for the tips.
Me too! Especially when your kind of in a hurry and forget what you cooked last time on the heat deflectors. I like the idea of having an extra set ready to go!
This is why I use a drip pan. Kick Ash Basket makes a half moon drip pan to fit just one deflector as well.
@@BrianMiller1973 with those half moon baskets, you clean with soaking in water and scrubbing ? Never seen those. Might need one. Thanks.
@@frankarmitage776 I usually line mine with aluminum foil to keep the clean up to a minimum. I have become a huge fan of Dawn Powerwash. Let it soak for several minutes and it does a great job with grease. I have cleaned my KJ grates with that since I got it and it keeps them very clean.
Thanks for a great video. We are only chicken and goat eaters so thinking of getting a classic Joe, what cuts of chickens/ goats go inside and how long and how much temperatures do I need to grill them for ? Any instructions would be helpful. I’m completely new to this.
Thank you, I'm so glad it was helpful. It depends on the size of kamado joe you have. If you are cooking chicken thighs, breast or wings, you can get a lot. Here is a chicken thigh video to give you an idea.
Big Joe BBQ Chicken Thighs Recipe - How to get Juicy Chicken Thighs on the Kamado Joe Big Joe
th-cam.com/video/z2254pCezqM/w-d-xo.html
I have the junior. For whole chicken I go low and slow. Run it between 200 and 250 for two hours . Check with meat thermometer usually 180 degrees F is just right. Nice smoke flavor.
What brand lump charcoal do you prefer?
I personally rotate KJ Big Block and Jealous Devil.
Just got my first Kamado Joe classic 2 grill excited and nervous
Congrats, you'll love it. Let me know if I can help.
NEW TO UR CHANNEL, SUBSCRIBED, AND THUMBS-UP. I AM INTERESTED IN PURCHASING AND SO FAR UR CHANNEL IS VERY HELPFUL. THIS WILL BE MY FIRST TIME PURCHASING AN EGG CERAMIC SMOKER, SO I REALLY WANT TO DO MY RESEARCH. I HAVE ALWAYS OWNED THE REGULAR ALUMINUM DRUM SMOKER, BUT THEY ARE SO LONG AND AT TIMES HARD TO MANAGE. I WILL CONTINUE TO WATCH UR CHANNEL AND LEARN BEFORE MY BIG PURCHASE DAY. THX U FOR SHARING
Thank you so much for watching and subscribing. Let me know what questions you have and how I can help!

Preheat is essential!
💯
I also think it important to clean grill grates after each cook. I have a spray btl of water to help break up the stuff on the grates. I also prep my grates with a high heat oil such as avocado or grape seed. Great video.
Thank you Bill, another great tip and reminder! Lately, I'm using grill rescue scrubber that was created by a fire fighter I think is solid. You just get it wet and scrub while grill grates are hot. It's high temp material.
Thanks for the tip!
great tips
Thank you!
Talking with hands is the first mistake! 🤣🙄 jk, love it 😍
It's how I was taught as a communicator 😂! It got your attention, I guess it worked.
Are you in Egypt?
Nope.
Great tips👍🏽My mistake was using the wrong kind of charcoal. When I bought my Kamado I didn’t know that there was such a big difference in charcoal and thought that Weber Charcoal was good enough. What a mistake that was…..after 3 hours of (3-2-1 method) cooking spareribs my charcoal was burnt up and temperature dropped rapidly. After that I only buy premium Quebracho or Marubu charcoal 😅
Another tip I find useful is putting slowroller and /or deflector plates and other “cold” accessories early enough in the dome so they can also be pre heated before putting the food on the grill.
And love my Meater..gives me the temp at the grill surface and the intern temp of the meat at the same time on my phone so I can work while my meat is slowly cooking and getting ready for dinner 😋
Thank you so much. Yes, such a great reminder to add those things inside while it's heating up. I like my Meater as well.
Don’t use charcoal, use bueguetts i believe its called. They need a chimney starter thought to light it up but last longer than charcoal
Thermometers are like the scope on your rifle. Don’t put a 100 dollar scope on an expensive gun. Don’t ruin your meat with the best grill out there cause you bought a cheap thermometer. You will be glad you did. 😉
👍🏻
I'm still learning the right amount of fuel it is super efficient.
Understand that...you'll figure it out after a bunch of cooks.
My biggest mistake was blowing the vent off, and it shot up to around 15 to 20ft in the air lol
🤪 That’s a good one!
Can I start with wood? And then it turns into charcoal I was 🤔 thinking.
Charcoal is made from wood that has been heated in the absence of oxygen. You can use wood logs in a Kamado but it's typically recommended to use charcoal as primary source. Once you light a wood log, and burns down, yes, it will turn into a bed of heat.
What are you trying to figure out?
Good Luck on hitting your goal. I would LOVE to win a Kamado Joe BIG JOE III 24" ;) Just sayin.
Found your channel and I had to sub ... good stuff here. Thanks for having me around.
Thank you so much, love being able to put these videos together. Let me know if there are other video ideas you want to see. Hopefully we can get you a new Joe! 😃
If I leave my rack in....my smoker grows mold...weird
how often are you cooking?
@@BartlowsBBQ Once a week
lol protein?! Wtf that sound so disgusting. It’s meat!
Thanks for watching! I’m glad you got the main message of the video. 😂
Meat is meat…. (Don’t be a “fad follower”)
😀
As soon as you call meat - "Protein" - I click off
You are still here. 😀In all seriousness, why did that make you click off? 🤷🏻♂️
@BartlowsBBQ he is more busy doing less click and more jack methinks. Your channel and terminology is great. Keep it up 😀❤
@jwiatrek...you misspelled 'jack'
Too bad for you, it's a great video.
Professionals call it protein buddy
Don’t buy knock off grills like Kamado Joe. Buy Big Green Egg and read the directions.
Thanks for watching!
@HeyJoe1978 shouldn't your user name be HeyEgg then? Egghead 🙄
