📚Description: Steve Howe's "The Les Paul" is one of the more popular guitars on my channel. I had sold this guitar a few years back but recently got it back. About a year ago, Steve's Webmaster reached out to me saying Steve saw that video and enjoyed it very much! I asked if Steve would be willing to tell his tale about this guitar and he was happy to oblige!
This is a phone interview I had with Steve Howe in March 2024. This is edited and pieced together to tell a congruent story and many of my lines had to be redubbed for clarity and because the audio was too hot.
It was a great chat! There might even be an opportunity to reunite him to play this guitar again in the future. The Pearl Buttons were not found, but the 4 pickups have been promised to me so hopefully we can recreate that guitar someday on the show!

Dillon Stadium by any chance? I saw that tour @ Dillon. Outdoors beautiful sunset happening my first l'il tab of acid shared between a couple buds. I remember about 40 mins in Eagles kick drum on Witchy Woman was bangin' like evil Indians on the rampage! LOL - By Edgars set his l'il blond pin head was leaving traces all over the stage the way he'd hop around - (acid realliy kickin in) and tho we knew Bruford wasn't going to tour the Close To LP and Andy was - still they were magical acid aside - Steve's Steel on end of And You And I in quad (or orange barrel) sound was epic. A great night. 🎸

Austin, getting The Les Paul serial # 26 that Steve Howe had is amazing by itself, but getting Steve Howe on your channel is unbelievable! The exchange between you and Steve around the fine tuners was very interesting. The secret Steve Howe signature on the back of the headstock really clinched the authenticity for me. Also to hear that Steve shipped a guitar to Alison Krause's son was again a special moment. I had never heard of a quad pickup Les Paul until today! Steve didn't like it, but still has them and would sell them! He seemed to say that the Les Paul Jr was all you need. Simplicity just like a telecaster. Thank you Austin for sharing! Right on!

Steve once said in an interview that he loved Charlie Christian because his playing was always “happy” and upbeat. For me that’s how I feel when I listen to Steve’s playing. It was good that Steve was allowed to speak without interruption and that that he was so open and remembered so much detail about so many individual instruments and developed on the questions. He still sounds pretty enthusiastic about guitars generally despite them being the 'tools of his trade' for a long time. I do associate him primarily with the ES 175 so it was cool to see and hear about the other types he has owned and used.

Steve Howe is absolutely correct about each guitar having it's own personality. and for a musician to be able to play their full repituare of their music. it could require them to have a number of guitars to reproduce all those sounds. it's so AWESOME that he has such a wonderful strong British accent, especially after all these years. and high marks to Austin for asking all the most correct questions. no doubt this was a great conversation/interview. as always Trogly never fails to amaze me.

    Salutations Austin!
Pretty great interview, you covered an awful lot of things during the interview and it was great information to learn.
It’s regrettable that he had lost a solo recording that had gotten erased, I know what that is like, and it also happens sometimes when creating digital art as well, and we refer to it in the digital art context as “the agony of delete”, it happens more frequently than many people realise, and often it is very difficult to replicate, I imagine that it bothers him quite a bit, it’s so very frustrating to loose something like that, which you feel is such a great representation of your work.
It’s so awesome that he still has the original tuning machines for The Les Paul, and also that he has the special set of four humbuckers from the quadraphonic Les Paul guitar, and also that he is willing to part with them, they would be super awesome to display next to The Les Paul.
It would be very interesting to see Gibson produce an actual authentic Steve Howe Signature 175 or even a Signature The Les Paul, with the current technology that they have been using on other signature models.
I really enjoyed this interview, and learning more about The Les Paul, now that you have refurbished it, it would be really grand if he paid you a visit and played the guitar again.
    Thanks again for the interview!
Please have an excellent and awesome day!
    ☀️✨🎸

Great interview style, Trogly. It’s a good talent that gets people to not just talk, but to tell their stories as they remember them out loud. And one of my pet peeves is when the interviewer constantly interjects and interrupts with their own story. I don’t care about the person who’s asking the questions, I’m curious about the person being interviewed. None of those problems here, and when you did talk besides just asking questions, it was more of a conversation between two people who have a common interest, and your in-depth knowledge definitely helps. Good vid!

Grew up listening to Steve and my first live concert was a Yes concert in 1975. Talk about putting on a show! Music is and has been my life’s passion. Steve has contributed so much to my life and he has been loved since my older brother brought home the YES album.
Many thanks Steve for all of the joy! Happy to hear your voice and to know you are doing well. Also thanks for inspiring me to become a vegetarian. My thinking was, if it’s good enough for Steve, it must be alright. 🎉
Thanks Trogly. This was a real treat for me.👏

Well done. What a document. You covered multiple books of information with asking the RIGHT questions. You really surfaced where Mr Howe is all about with instruments. Now we only need to listen to the songs to know what he is spiritually about.
What stands out for midi guitarists is the part about roland and gibson midi guitars. Here is somebody who has toured his whole life and knows what works and what doesn't.

So happy to hear Steve say that you can find unique music in different guitars...Every guitar I pick up takes me somewhere different... some just respond as if they were a body prt, others I have to fight a little bit, but each relatioship will bring different riffs or licks... the music really does come from them.

In 1972, I had tickets to see Yes at the Shady Grove Music Fair. They were the warm-up act for Humble Pie. Shady Grove was a theater in the round venue, which wasn't the greatest for bands. As such, the stage setup was split in half. Humble Pie on one side and Yes on the other. Since it was what was called back then, Festival Seating (no assigned seats), the HP side of the venue was packed with people. On the Yes side, there was me and about 30 more people. So I was super excited because I couldn't have cared less about HP. As was typical for the time, the show was about 40 minutes behind schedule.
As the show was about to start, an announcement was made that some of the equipment for Yes hadn't arrived, so Yes wouldn't be performing. I'm 69 now, and I still feel the disappointment i felt back then because I wasn't able to see the group I considered the greatest set of musicians ever assembled.
And the general admission tickets were $6 each.
