    Back in the 80s before there were easy splice kits, there was a lot of manual work to do a HV splice, my boss let a guy do a splice that had never done one, it blew the manhole cover into the air when it failed, and that was only 5 KV

    I had a guy next door to a place I was renting stealing off the primaries. I was in his place to fix the overhead bridge crane. He was renting the undamaged end of a large steel warehouse after a coating line at the other end caught fire and destroyed about 150 feet of the building on the other end. Brand new 250KVA pad mount, everything done 100% professionally EXCEPT no metering equipment. Like 2 years later I'm next door looking for something in a storage trailer and and his place was stormed with PECO bucket trucks, company cars, guys in suits, women in business attire, even some lady with nice legs wearing a dress. There had to be like 20 PECO people out there and they all had cameras (1990 ish style). Nobody was smiling at all. That night his whole facility was dark and the next day there was a trailer mounted Detroit Diesel generator hooked up to the building. I always wondered what they did to him for that trick, but we were kind of friendly "business neighbors" and I never brought the subject up. I figured that was a bit of a sore spot

      @ not much! I briefly worked for a company called Harp Line Construction in Montana after I graduated high school. Middle of winter wasn’t much fun. I did that for a few months before I joined the Marines as a diesel mechanic. After that I went to school to become a cnc machinist as a career and never got back into it, even though the owner said he would train me to become a lineman. It was actually very interesting work, and I learned quite a lot about how our power grid works. I was basically just working as an apprentice as I had zero experience. Mostly doing traffic control or being the gopher for the guys that knew what they were doing. I’m retired now but I wonder what life would have been like had I stuck with it.

I've seen videos from underground vault fires and could imagine what this blowout might've looked like. When I was younger I considered lineman training but after seeing a lineman getting blown out of his bucket and falling lifeless to the ground 60'ft below, I'm like nope, ain't gonna do that. "This black drain pipe shouldn't be where I'm digging without calling! I'll just cut chop it on each side of this trench real qui 💥" 🤣 I'm aware of what the suspected story is, but also know this happens all the time with people renting excavators and not locating before they dig... Sometimes even when you do call, so atleast it's not on me 😉 Last things hit were a major telecom line for a never finished subdivision planned back in the late 1980s of which the phone company had no records or knowledge of, the other was a natural gas line that was run in the wrong spot because the original installers were going to have to bore and hand dig to correctly follow the property line as laid out on their map... The gas guys located the line, apparently lost it, so just marked where it should be instead of actually following it and admitting it was wrong... I guess they were hoping no excavation would be happening in that area since half the time they are marking stuff far away from any digging just because they have to mark and we can't work anywhere until they do... Also rubbed an underground line 4" deep at the base of a pole recently... The pole crew apparently accidentally set the pole on top of the underground line, so the crew doing the connection buried the cable that would normally turn 90 degrees 24" deep just under the surface after wrapping the pole a couple of times 🫣 The pole was luckily coming out and getting spliced to go across a road instead of over it back to the original transformer... Pure luck that the excavator operator happened to dig around the pole to make sure the underground lines didn't immediately bulge out... He hit the line 4" deep like 3ft from the pole and I helped him uncover the mess from there before taking pictures 🤣 Nobody could believe that anyone would EVER leave that! Obviously the install crew assumed it would likely get cut or pulled in the future because instead of cutting the slack they left about 12' or more coiled around the pole base, starting tight on the pole and going two wraps deep about 3'-4' in overall outside diameter 😂 Even the Utility guys had to take personal photos of that mess! It was old enough to where it was probably undocumented, but we didn't rat then out to the supervisors... It was probably the less than amazing company they use for lots of contract work anyway... I guarantee the linemen did some quiet investigation when they got back just to find out for sure lol, but I knew the guys and they know we wouldn't be complaining because they've saved our butts by putting us first/same day, and we try to make everything easy and fast for them in return... Although cameras are now kind of messing that up 🙄 I mean I get it from a liability giant corporation POV, but the good easy fun days are over now for them... They are now slower than the pictures in the training manuals, because one man using a ladder to pull and splice a residential hook up now requires 8 guys and 2 safety supervisors after waiting months to build a temporary road on a mountain across 2 fences to do the same job that my buddy previously did in 30 minutes by himself, I just helped carry his cordless press and ladder bag, then he told me to stay 50ft behind his ladder following all the old safety rules... I think he finally moved on to a different company position once he wasn't allowed to actually feel/be productive and safe simultaneously without wearing being in sight of a truck camera at all times... 😒 It's a crap show now, even by directly going through the same great supervisors... They know what was once a "Tomorrow before noon" completion is now "Hopefully in about two weeks we can get a crew here for atleast long enough to get started 🙁" They are almost embarrassed to give that answer, but know we understand why that's now the answer... Out of their control sadly...

    • @billtheunjust
      @billtheunjust 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      @11:49 you can see the damaged bit in the middle of the cable. All joints need to be in an accessible space, and with the effort needed to replace these cables it's best to replace the whole thing and not risk there being a second fault in the cable that they didn't see. When you factor in work permits, blocking traffic, and the number of guys it would take to do this a second time, it's just best not to risk reusing the damaged piece.
