  • Hi guys, i asked myself this quesiton 1000 times before pulling the trigger and buying this as my first bike. In this video i go over a few concerns and facts about the bike and provide my opinion on the subject as someone who did exactly that. Comment down below your thoughts on the subject!

There’s no such thing as a beginners bike, you can still die on a 125 or a 1000cc and on both you can exceed speed limits, city or highways. Its all about self discipline and control.

Beginners. No problem. That’s what rain mode is for 🍻

Perfect video thanks! I'm 44 just passed and this is the bike for me in looks. 1200 is a lot bigger than I originally wanted but rain mode sounds the key. Shame they don't do it in a 900. They say speed twin 900 now but it's not styled the same and will always be a street twin in my eyes

Just bought a 2020 speed twin. First 'big bike' from a 125cc.
    Passed A licence on a 650.
Cant wait to ride it. Good review and advice.

I have a similar background. I took the riding course, passed the test and since then I have been riding a 150 scooter (2 years in march). I’m 43 yo and I’m not interested in beating other riders or speeding everywhere. Would you recommend it as my first big bike?

  • @Mohammed68099

I just went on a test ride today to check the Speed Twin. The power is more than manageable with Rain and Road mode. The sport mode becomes a bit aggressive and jumpy.
I can relate to your statement. I agree with your thoughts…

They are amazing bikes and in theory I agree with especially around the cost point, buying a bike you grow out of quickly etc… however for me biking was a journey and I wouldn’t change how I did it from 125>600>2 x 900 to 1200 over many years. The unfortunate fact is you are gonna have an off, overcook it in a corner panic and brake instead of lean. It takes time to learn your craft and skills and dropping a speed twin is gonna hurt. Plus it is always more fun riding a bike to its limit and within your skills than a bike that has more talent than you. Just my thoughts and at the end of the day we all go the way we can finances allowing. The speed is an awesome bike though, I went for the T120 myself and love it !

Hi Marcus, thanks for your insight. I agree with some of your points and I think it depends on the confidence and natural ability of the rider too. I've racked up 3800 miles on her so far and my riding skill has come on a long way, never felt like I would drop her in the corners etc but I understand newbies may be at risk. Hope you enjoy that T120, I almost went for it myself! 🏍️👌

From 125 to 250 to ST in about 6 months. Very easy to ride. Bike drives itself feeling. Keep in RAIN mode. But I cannot stress enough - learn how to use the clutch, respect the throttle and get comfortable with slow speed riding before getting onto this bike. I'm not sure if this bike is good to ride however if you have never or have minimal experience riding in traffic. The exhaust notes are amazing!

It all comes down to the size, strength and their maturity. The Speed Twin is docile. It's quick, but it's not fast. Has good brakes though and ABS so that's a benefit.
Start in rain mode and work your way up as your skill increases... I have a buddy that started on a first gen Busa and he was fine...

Great video thanks, covering the very question i've been pondering. I'm pretty close to getting a T100 thinking it a greater allrounder and a good place to start (city and countryside - nice weather new rider, older). But the ST is tempting - even if i'd never thought I'd consider a bike anywhere near a 1200cc - but it's a little higher seated (Im 6'1), lighter and better spec and in rain mode to acclimatise well and grow into....

Engine displacement shouldn't effect your decision on a bike necessarily. Weight, seat height and balance of the machine should be considered very important once your price range is narrowed down. Theres plenty of 1000cc + bikes that have lower output than many 600s. A BMW will handle completely different than say, a Harley Davidson or Triumph. Imho it's hard to beat the packages Triumph has put together in the Bonneville line. When I went to my local dealer to look at bikes, I was drawn to the new Speed Twin because it offers the most bang for your buck and the seat height fits me very well. Dont let numbers fool you. Talk to people and test ride some bikes.

@@mattvilla6077 '5"7ish 200lbs. With my boots on I can almost stand flat footed on my Speed Twin. The only thing that took a little getting used to is the footpeg position. They're back a bit further than I'm used to. This made the shift lever too high for my liking, and I had to move it down 1 spline to be comfortable.

I don't think rain does drop the power? Just less snatchy on the throttle. I own this bike and feel rain is just more compliant. Also don't see a problem being a first bike. Take it easy etc. I had a street triple as my first bike and that has more power!

I've owned many bikes and I would never recommend owning this as a first. Someone new would be caught off guard during a fear or panic situation with this bikes capabilites. There's always exceptions but, for most, I believe it's too much. I currently own a 2014 Trophy, 97 VMax and a 2021 Speed Twin.

It's a beautiful ride. I'm getting back into riding and bouncing back and forth between a few bikes to consider for purchase but the leaders are the Z900rs or the Speed Twin. Very similar but, as a taller rider, the edge may go toward the Kawasaki's higher seat height for me. Still, my eyes linger over the Triumph.

@@seaninness334 No worries Sean, most people think I'm 5ft 10 but I'm actually 6ft 3. All jokes aside I find it really comfortable, especially with the flat back seat, you can move around as much as you need to get comfortable. If you are taller than 6ft 1/2 I could see the speed twin being a bit small but if you test ride it and love it then just go for it! 🙌🏍️

    No. - (experienced owner of a T100.)
It's too heavy, the handlebars are too narrow for such a heavy bike. It's a 1200!
Start on a 600 or below. A great bike for a beginner in my opinion is a 411cc Royal Enfield Scram or Himalayan.
It's cheaper, just in case you change your mind about riding. It's slow enough it won't surprise you = less likely to drop/damage it. It is less complicated and easier to get the hang of quickly.
