  • We review the NEW 2022 Triumph Street Twin (Now Renamed Speed Twin) Bonneville EC1 Special Edition, which has a custom paint scheme & hand painted lines and graphics. Is it worth the extra cash over the standard model? Watch the video to make that decision after you've heard all about it!
We put the bike through its paces on all roads before making the video as always. Here we go into how it rides, handles, turns and stops. How good does it sound? Does the 900cc engine have enough power and torque? What is the quality like? How are the gears? How good are the brakes? What could be improved? We give it to you straight!
This modern classic is Triumph's best selling Bonneville and you will be able to see why by watching all of this video.

I’ve watched this video I don’t know how many times and always forgotten to comment so here I am… I tested the two T Bonnevilles, the Kawasaki RS 650 and 900, plus the Interceptor, and I have to say, none of them come even close to this bike for shear grin-ability, style or value for money. Like @PhilipHermannBE, I’ve been able to get one from the local Triumph dealer here in Germany. I should be picking it up this week, but I’m on holiday 🙄
I think you both deserve a medal from Triumph. You’re doing a fantastic job! Great content. Keep up the good work 👏🏾👏🏾

I know exactly what you mean about young people. I have been trying to get my son, age 28, into bikes for five years. I have even offered to buy him his first bike, and he is simply not interested. He'd rather sit on the couch, no girlfriend, playing video games for hours and hours. I feel bad for him because he will have no stories to tell his kids down the road, if he ever has any. I guess it's a hopeless cause.

That’s a shame. They don’t make biking cool in films etc so youngsters have no role models to emulate I guess

I'm 25 and only know a handful of other guys around my age who are into bikes. We're rare but we're definitely out there, I think it's due to our risk averse, bubble-wrap society. It's been drilled into our heads our entire lives how bikes are just deathtraps, by overly protective parents and by wider society. We had posters up in my college canteen of bike crash horror stories for christ sake

@@matt961234567 you’re right, it’s drilled into people not to get into bikes. I (Darcy) am 19 and I only know 1 person my age who rides. It’s a shame but there’s just so many hurdles these days!

Instead of forcing hobbies on your children, maybe try showing interest in whatever hobbies they’re into. You’d be surprised how interesting video games can be. What you find interesting might not be appealing to them because they’re used to seeing you do it and they just dont find it that interesting. We’re all individuals.

I just bought this exact motorcycle a few weeks ago, and it's absolutely amazing! The torque is fantastic, as well as the build quality. It's not advertised, but both levers are actually adjustable, and the stock exhaust sound is one of the best I've heard out of the factory. I can't wait for the weather to warm up a bit so I can really start putting some serious miles on it. Nice review.

Completely lost it when I heard you talk about “youngsters” like myself. Wish my parents were as cool as you, but it took me heading off to college in a different state (as I live in the US) and secretly getting my motorcycle license and buying a bike for me to be able to ride. Being the youngest with two older brothers, my parents weren’t quite as accepting for their youngest and only daughter to buy a crotch rocket. But here I am, three years later, still enjoying the ride. Have watched all your Triumph videos and trying to convince myself to buy another bike. Thanks for the review!

I'm 30 and I feel like I'm part of the last generation that grew up with a huge fascination for cars and motorcycles.
I know someone who works in a daycare and I've been told none of the kids really know anything about cars or bikes, they can't even tell what brand of car their parents drive.
When I was that age, I was all into Lamborghini, Porsche and BMW.
It's just not a thing anymore, unfortunately.
I've always been into motorcycles but only started riding recently, kinda wish I started sooner.

I'm not a high horsepower guy (above 100 to 110 horsepower). I've had one bike with 201 horsepower at the rear wheel and found it useful only while doing land speed racing and sold it off quickly.
If a bike weighs in around 500 pounds 60 horsepower gets me by, 80 to 90 is great and 100 to 110 is the most I'll ever need for the street.

    Hi
Went to the NEC earlier this year specifically to sit on this and the T120/T100. Both of those felt good at 5’9” with 30 inch inside. I thought the Street Twin would suit me better due to the lower seat height but no. I found the pegs to be set the same on all three, but the lower seat meant as you say I was in a jockey position. Just sitting on it was uncomfortable on my knees and hips. Maybe something to do with my young age of 61, but quickly realised this wasn’t a bike for me.

    • @MrDarcy-OlMan

I usually don't like a matte finish, but it is good. Triumph, Royal Enfield, classic 80s & 90s Hondas... With the exception of aging biker gangs, passing through adventure riders, & the "rocket heads" (local term for the guys who build custom street bikes small and fast) that meet up in parking lots... Those are all anybody rides now. Royal Enfields & Triumph is becoming the motorcycle mainstay in my part of the US

Nice review again - thank you! I have a 2021 T100 and love it to bits. It's the ideal bike for me now I'm older and have slowed down a bit. Strangely, though not unexpectedly I'm enjoying motorcycling so much more now I'm not thrashing about everywhere. I think these bikes remind us of the feelings we had when we first got into bikes -before we were chasing the horsepower. Regarding self-cancelling indicators? I've had a love/hate relationship with these in the past. We used to fall out - the indicators and me. Especially on roundabouts. I always ended up pushing the cancel button right on the cusp of them cancelling themselves. The result being another activation. This went on for some time 🤣

Is it just me, or are these Triumph bikes almost too perfect these days? As in, to the point I don't really want it compared to something like the Royal Enfield 650. I'm not sure if I can articulate how I feel about it but I will try. I suggest that imperfect people are the most interesting people. They are genuine and have their ups and downs. They are are human! It seems to me that certain machines can have this quality too, if only in the eye of the beholder anyway. When a machine is so stylized, so refined and everything engineered to German like precision, it's as if there is no room for the machine to develop a character and therefore bond with it's owner (lol, I know that sounds crazy!) I've owned single cylinder Kawasaki bikes to a Yamaha R1, SV1000, 650 Jap bikes and even Yamaha's big MT-01 1600cc naked. The bike I adored the most was the little Kawasaki KZ200 single cylinder that I restored. It handled badly, could barely crack 100km/h and had poor brakes, but it really gave me a genuine thrill even to start it up and set off slowly. Perhaps it's that motorcycles have become too car like? Maybe something more along the lines of a motor-bicycle is what provides as good a thrill as any! I've not ridden a 650 Enfield yet, but I think this could be the reason for their success.... It reminds us of motor-bicycling, it is not perfect, yet is also a good handling motorcycle with a good sound and good power.

    • @MrDarcy-OlMan
      @MrDarcy-OlMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes very good points. The Bonneville’s in that respect, are actually very refined, which is why the Royal Enfields score on that

I have a 2020 model and it's a great town bike absolutely nailed it with the rev range and torque, light enough, flickable, balanced and slim enough for traffic filtering. I have customised mine a little with tiger 800 bars, higher shotgun exhaust, spoked tubeless wheels, larger 14ltr tank and of course heidenau k60 tyres. A lager tank really takes the hassle out of regular fill ups and gives great range on a trip. You're right about its top end, over 50-60 mph it doesn't really perform so get used to crushing around at 50-55 mph. It's a great non threatening bike for the beginner, ladies, returning bikers, weekenders, commuters or like me a second bike for the weekly commute.

I would've been willing to get the '18 if you could've dealt with them that is. One of the last times I went there they still had that bike and it was in 2020.

@@Kista79 I bought mine in 19 it was one of the last 18s they had in stock and the only only one in the show room ready to go. With a number of extra flashy bits. It was significantly cheeper than a 19. Or T 100. I also liked the colour, the mag wheels, and exhaust. It reminded me of my bike from 40 years ago.
I made them an offer for the sticker price on the road, I told them to take all the flashy bits off, because they didn’t interest me. I would would take a base model in red. If they had it ready today.
I left with the bike as is. And the flashy bits are nice.
There is not usually a lot of room for negotiation. It’s nice to know my bike is holding its value well.
I’ve been offered good trade in deals, when tire kicking by other dealers. I really like it so I’m keeping it.
I would not have paid full MSRP for it, when the new model was available. Even though I didn’t think I’d ride it hard enough to notice the difference.
The later models are nice, It’s 2022 now, I would pay the extra.
Used don’t last long on a dealers floor. If you can find one.
I’d still want the red one.
Could be worse, Harley Dealers have been known to ask extra above MSRP.
In the end pick what makes you happy. Limited, extra fancy, the right colour or the best deal. Whatever you feel that is

i disagree with 20 percent better 👀 maybe if you only care about engine specs and performance maybe but fit and finish are miles apart 😲 the RE feels cheap but that can be a good thing depending on what you are looking for 😁 For a person who wants something very beautiful with the best fit and finish they can get in this form factor then Triumphs are the way to go 👀 if you just want an affordable fun bike to ride, customize, do all your own maintenance and maybe abuse, RE all the way 😁 Id personally pick the RE but the Triumphs are stunning in person ☺ the 10k mile service with valve shims on the Triumphs are a deal breaker for me, i ride that in a year. the RE has easy locknut adjustments 🤭 Harleys dont need adjustments at all 😹

@@DefZen343 Just got rid of my RE I found it a bit underwhelming for a Nine r t. I would not say they are cheap finish , considering they are nearly twice the price hear as to what they are in India. I would think Truimph are not half the price in India, so thats makes RE a hell of a bargain compared to Truimph in India. Truimph are beautifully finished but compared to my MV,s they are not in the Same league finish wise. Truimph are pricey when you figure a large chunk of them are built in Asia and assembled here I believe. Where BMW, MV and Ducati are solely built in Europe with the costs that go with that. Truimph are great bikes ,for me I refer to them as the 90% bike, the final 10% is missing for me to pull the plug and buy one. The Choice with Truimph is twin or thriple, the choice with BMW is vast and endless.

@@checker3694 woahh! i didnt know they were that much cheaper in India 😲 they are over 2000 dollars cheaper in India than in the US 😲 the BMWs are very well built and beautiful machines ☺ the dealer near me sells Both RE and BMW motorcycles 😹 i mean the RE feels cheap because of the Casting marks and blemishes on the metal parts, plastic fenders, Thin and flimsy brackets and ugly lights, metal finishes are also lackluster. For the price is understandable ofcourse 😸 if someone is looking for a premium feeling machine that looks like an old British bike, the Triumphs are the only option 👀 if one doesn't care about cosmetics and better engine performance then the RE has alot of advantages 😸 just wish the Interceptors had tubeless tires ☹️

I've got a 2022 Speed Twin 900 and can say without a doubt I made the right decision! Absolutely love the bike. Stock exhausts sound lovely, handling is great, comfy for a pillion (up to 45 minutes) and has all the top speed you need on UK roads. Getting off the lights is a dream with the 80Nm and in a gloss black it's beautiful!
I did get it second hand a year old at £6750 with a lot of Triumph add ons so extremely good value for what I paid. Next one I'm looking at is an Indian Scout!

Why do these good bikes have to be so heavy? I'm 166 cm, 67 kg, 74 years, been riding 50 years. Getting a bike 500-750+ cc, 60-80 nm torque and bhp, seat height below 79cm, weight below 180 kg and ground clearance over 15 cm, mileage 25 km/ litre seems so hard. Manufacturers don't seem to care for riders below 170 cm height! I currently ride a Tiger Sport 850 and would like something smaller for my later years. Any suggestions? Good review, all relevant issues. Thanks...from Mumbai.

Love my 2018 (pre modes and hp hike). As mentioned by others below the sound is great and you've captured it well (I'm an ex location sound recordist amongst other things). Bang on regarding mods - potentially a Triggers Broom! At 12:24...on mine if you maintain full twist on the key with one hand it keeps the hook disengaged so the seat comes off easily with the other hand. 13:50 that's the tool to adjust the rear suspension. Thanks for the great honest review, as you say, one can get the detailed spec online, good to get an experienced rider's overview and also well said about getting youngsters on board, this the perfect 1st big bike for a newbie with taste! :-)

Re youngsters sitting on the bus: of course they are: bikes, even older ones, are expensive, let alone insurance, fuel, and that's after they've paid a fortune for training and taking the tests. I reckon you still think riding is cheap - it was when we were young. Re this bike: thank krikes it hasn't got those stupid fake carbs. I like the cast wheels - spokes are a pain to clean, but the fork gaiters look daft nowadays. I rode a speed twin as a loan bike when my street triple was having its first service: loved the gutsy easygoing motor and relaxed riding position. I think it's a shame that Triumph don't make a sports bike anymore: I had a 675 and loved it. Re self cancelling indicators: I've never come across a bike with these, and I've ridden a lot of bikes. And, in a car, the fricking things often cancel too soon. Better off without them.

I really enjoyed your review. I started learning to ride 1 month ago and 2 weeks ago i bought a Street Twin in Ironstone (😍). I’ve always loved the Bonneville and the Street Twin is the perfect balance of the traditional look combined with the modern amenities. Your review is spot on and helped me make my decision. As a 5’9” beginner rider, the bike is a perfect size (being able to comfortably flatfoot makes a massive difference as a newbie) and the high torque engine is just so forgiving. So glad I was able to get it so soon after starting to ride and I’m hoping for many safe miles as I build up my experience.

Quite how it’s meant to be used is beyond me. Overall though this is a great looking, useful bike that will be a pleasure to own and ride. My only criticism is the short front mudguard. A slightly longer one with a black extension be an elegant way to stop the road crap from being flung up onto the front of the radiator.

The seat comes off VERY easily, once you realize you have to hold the key turned to the right as you lift up on the back of the seat, then just slide the whole seat to the back of the bike (takes about 2 seconds). My only suggestions for the next model would be: 1) automatic turn signal canceling, and 2) a bit larger LCD display, especially, as you mentioned, larger gear indicator. I couldn't be happier though owning the Street Twin! Oh, and I added the Triumph heated grips too and bar-end mirrors, which I highly recommend!

Loved this review. The location, roads and your farm look stunning. Wish I lived is a similar looking area. I'm in the midst of choosing between the Trident and the Street Twin. I found myself wondering if that bike is just different in paint only? I ask in part because of all the Street Twin videos I've watched of stock Street Twins this bike here has the beefiest exhaust note I've heard. That awesome sound has me all that much more excited about test riding the Street Twin this week. I rode the Trident this past weekend and loved it but ultimately I think I really am more inclined towards classics and that Street Twin in particular.

Thanks buddy. 100% go for Street Twin or any Bonneville rather than Trident. Yes its just the paint scheme. Our mic is better than most channels so you get the sound more with our videos.

@@MrDarcy-OlMan That's great to hear about the exhaust note! Sounds just perfect in your vid. I'll be able to test the Street Twin back to back with the Trident this week on the same country roads for an accurate comparison. Unfortunately the one and only Street Twin was in the crate. As it was I lucked into there even being a Trident to sit on and test ride. Supply and distribution of bikes is really problematic and way behind because of CØV!D. I had to wait 2.5 months for the bike I started on last fall, I waited 2 months for an Indian Scout Sixty before cancelling this spring and was lucky I found one at all to test ride. Other dealers told me no test rides....only bikes that come in are pre-sold, no on floor inventory. My Triumph dealer told me that if I want a different color Trident than I rode or the Street Twin that's in the crate I'll have to wait till September or more likely October for the next bikes.

    G'day from Australia!
Totally agree with your comments, quite objective analysis and you've made the look and feel elements very relatable.
I think the older 865cc T100 Bonneville is closer to the Interceptor 650 in terms of classic aesthetics and I favoured that bike (the older T100) for a long time. However, I think the Speed Twin 900 has really nailed the modern classic aesthetic. The silhouette and stance is classic and the details are modern and classy.
The design team has done an exceptional job with this bike as a lapse in design cues could really tarnish the image by way of a "tacky" label.

Great review as usual, I like the Triumph retro range, I just think they are a bit pricey, 9 grand is ok for this bike, but I think Triumph could do better, this bike should have full led lights, twin clocks and better suspension for 9k , after all it's built in Thailand.

Young people today....... The seat height is a bit low on the Street Twin, compared with the T100. I like the dual analogue gauges and spoked wheels on the T100 too. Thanks for a great review!

I have this bike and love it. To be fair though, a couple of things I love less.
The rear suspensions are average at best and make the ride not always confortable on country side roads.
Yor thigh can get hot due to motor heat on its side.
In the same register the engine seems to heat easil, especially in summer. Then the fan turns on and you get a nice blow of hot air that makes summer even hoter. That's something I have not noticed on my other bikes.
