Chris picked an excellent electional astrological time to do this podcast during the Sun in Virgo. The Hermit represents secretive knowledge and learning.
yes!! this makes me feel good. i taught my first tarot class this summer and i layed the cards out and had the students walk around and look at them, touch them and talk about what they felt. It was all about relationships between each card. my class was intuition based. but i was nervous about doing it "right." love her explanations!
What a great conversation…thank you Joy and Chris. 🌷 I have no idea how or What pulled me into evolutionary astrology and tarot except it feels to be a Soul pull…helping myself help herself. Such a mystery that matches our Heart. 🙏
I studied astrology before I studied tarot and it was so helpful. Ive been working with both for over 30 years plus studied symbolism, I Ching, Kabbalah, shamanism, Reiki, Jin Shin, Western Mysteries, all relevant,
The two of cups having the feeling/meaning of Venus in Cancer helped both of those click. I now get to and will enjoy this deep dive into astrology with tarot. Both of which I’ve been neglecting 😅
Some tarot decks have the symbols of the astrology along with the meaning of the card. Ciro Marchetti’s tarot of dreams is a great example of it. For anyone interested.
This was such a great episode. Joy's intuitive approach really touched my soul while she was speaking and I got my cards out and read them in story form for my husband. We were both blown away at the results. I'm actually excited to start reading again without the stress of memorization. I especially appreciated the help she suggested with the pip cards as I have always struggled with these. Thank you Chris for having Joy on your show!
Loved this episode! Today is my solar return and I will be in a 9th house profection year and I pulled The Fool. Thought it was the perfect card to start out the year! :)
Interesting episode as always. One day I wish you would do an episode on Thoth Tarot and Astrology as well! :) Aleister Crowley was very into Astrology as well.
Ive worked with Thoth deck mainly since 1990 and used it for over 30,000 readings. I would love to come on Chri's show and talk more about Astrology and Tarot
The more you use the tarot the more your intuition kicks in... itss about the correct way of stating a question...your intention and the querent should also if possible handle the cards. Ultimately its about the subconscious mind.. which knows everything....its deep and magical
Joy is such a kind and genuine spirit, I really enjoyed this episode! I think the story about the main person recognised as the author of the deck not describing correctly the design of some minor arcana cards is about Crowley, not Waite. His descriptions of some cards in The Book of Thoth don't match the paintings that Lady Frieda Harris did. In their correspondence we can see that he would send her some written instructions for the cards, but she was often frustrated with him that they are too vague. In the end her input as an artist was much more significant than how it was initially portrayed and is only now being recognised. She did an amazing job, I have a great love for this deck especially because of her amazing art.
Hi Beata! Thanks for the comments. I love Frieda Harris's art as well! As to the RWS, the story I'm referring to was in the book I couldn't remember the title to, LOL. "The Tarot: History, Symbolism, and Divination" by Robert Place. He discusses the idea that she worked on the Minor Arcana independently on pp. 184-186. The comment I made about Waite not describing the images correctly is addressed in the last paragraph on p. 185, continued on the top of the next page. There are plenty of great stories about Crowley and Harris as well!
@@JoyVernonAstrologyTarotReiki that’s so interesting that the two main moders decks have the exact same story with the female artist not being recognised for their full contribution. I am going to get that book now! Thank you ❤️.
@@BeataTarotTutorials "Pixie" Pamela Coleman-Smith died a pauper after painting the whole deck in six months and was buried in an unmarked pauper's grave. Tarot Grand teacher Mary Greer wrote a bio of her and many tarot readers credit the deck as Rider Waite Smith deck now. Lady Freida Harris is noted but is not that widely associated with painting the Thoth Tarot deck over five years.
I loved this video so much and your guest was amazing. Please can we have a few more of these astrology/tarot podcasts? I would love to hear you and your guest talk about each tarot card and try to compare them to different signs, and even decants of the zodiac. Even if you can't do that, love the show! Thank you very much. You turned a boring night into an interesting one with this video, and your other videos have done the same! Love Kelly and austin too, the two guests you had that went over all zodiac signs and houses! Take care
I started reading tarot for family & friends back in 2017 and I taught myself the same way. I tried to do it the “logical” way by studying the traditional meanings behind the card but having this knowledge doesn’t allow you the full experience of reading intuitively. So when I started strengthening my psychic abilities instead I was able to pick up information that I wouldn’t necessarily pick up if I just focused on the traditional meanings. This becomes so much more important and accurate when you start reading for strangers & find that you can read their entire situation without knowing a thing about them. Intuitive tarot never fails when it’s personal readings, I think the knowledge of tarot works well when you’re doing general & collective readings. Thank you for this episode! Really enjoyed it. 🙏❤️
Loved this and resonated on a particular level too. I am new to Tarot, recently my sister got a deck and I'm intrigued, and don't even have a deck nor anything, but 25+ years studying astrology, not a pro but I study every night. This was so eye opening and it is evident how serious and passionate she is to her work. which means I trust I have something to glean , and even if I'm kinda like...how does this work? not that I I can only learn by opening my mind and trying. Learned soooooo much. About the intuitive " in person energy".... kinda off topic...even though im not even close to a tarot reader, I am in a one-one profession as well. The essence of feeling out the energy in-person is so profoundly important in my line of work. As a private tutor for kids with many different "disabilities" my intuition and reading/ transmuting energy - is paramount to my success; in person is much better to feel the energy. some of my kiddos are non-verbal, where this comes in handy.
Great interview. Now a fan of Joy Vernon. This is the second context in which I've encountered Saturn as being yin/feminine. (The other was Charles Obert's writings). It makes intuitive sense to me, connecting Saturn with yin with form. A question that came up, for anybody: in the triplicity rulerships, wouldn't it make more sense to connect Saturn with Earth? The day / night logic no longer seems strong enough for me, especially since it's already been violated, so to speak, kicking the Sun out as a triplicity ruler of the air signs and introducing Mercury there. Just a direction I'm leaning this afternoon. For balance sake, in the triplicity rulerships, Mars could be assigned to Fire, instead, which is intuitive and in line with its yin-ness.
chris , i think its really cool how you speak from a place of collected data/research & knowledge vs from a place of personal bias ... unless that is your bias ... but idk its so nice
Pamela Colman Smith is also one of the few well-known Black women in occult/tarot work from that time! Stuart Kaplan’s biography of her is worth reading. If Joy is in the Seattle area and looking for a fume-inducing trance state for her office, I recommend north Tacoma or Gasworks Park area near Fremont! Ha
very interesting that Joy said dont use the Rider Waite Smith deck. I always trust my intuition and when I bought my first tarot deck as a teen when there was only about 20 printed decks. I instinctively had an aversion to the Rider Smith very Christian symbolism and put it away for years and studied astrology seriously. I like Joy's energy and she is very knowledgable. I came from spiritual knowledge first too
Is anyone at the point yet where they know a persons life/soul/vibrational numbers that they do a reading for, and the cards add up to that persons number once turned 😂🔮👌 so satisfying and magickal, yet further confirmation of our deep connections to our vibrational energy receptors in this universe xx
If you know the meanings of the Planets and Signs in Astrology, you already have a map for the Thoth deck. A knowledge of the Tree of Life and Kabbalah would handy too, as it is an esoteric deck. I recommend "Understanding Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot" by Lon Milo DuQuette, 2003 as a guide to the Thoth deck. T. Susan Chang's blog and her Fortune's Wheelhouse tarot podcast are excellent resources too. I love her blog series on the relationship between the Minor Arcana pips and the Decans in Astrology, and how these reflect the meanings, and how the Major Arcanas cards related to a particular minor can be found via astrology. Whilst she uses the Rider Waite she also refers to the Thoth too. Her practice of drawing a Card of the Day, and tracking and recording her reflections on how the cards plays out in her life every day. That really good, but once you've familiarised yourself with the deck, put the books away and stick with the journal and the deck, to build your fluency. Telling the story is the real key.
I learned on Thoth at the Seattle Alchemy School & while I think it’s a brilliant deck (& the guidebook is a definite keeper - The Tarot Handbook by Angeles Arrien, one of the great tarot writers of all time), I had to let go of it after awhile due to its heavy masculine imagery.
Hi TheMagick HourZ! This is Joy. I wouldn't say the Thoth has any greater history than the other lineages (check out my blog post: joyvernon.com/intarotduction-tarot-lineages-and-reading-styles/). So if you'd like to avoid it, you can! When I focus on systems, I'm actually talking about the Golden Dawn tradition, from which the Thoth is derived. If you find a Golden Dawn deck you like, you can work with the astrological and qabalistic symbolism free of whatever Thoth influence you wish to avoid. :-) Once you've familiarized yourself with the Golden Dawn system, then if the Thoth seems more appealing, you can easily add it to your tool box.
I think the Thoth tarot would be easiest for people with an astrological background to use out of the box. If you understand astrology it's all over the Thoth deck: the decans are in the Minor Arcana, the elements are in the aces and court cards and the planets and signs are in the Major Arcana. You could start with just that and be giving meaningful, deep and comprehensive readings without reading anything else. All the other layers could come later. The Thoth and RWS are both Golden Dawn decks, but the Thoth plasters the symbolism all over the cards for the world to see while the RWS is more subtle in how it presents (or hides) the symbolism.
LOL. Who knows what I said. The Pillar of Form is indeed headed by Saturn, on the left as you're looking at the diagram. Sorry for the mistake! Good catch!
Soooo great! I already booked a reading with you Joy. I learned Tarot last year and the instructor did exactly what you said you wouldn't do....LOL. You're insightful. Thank you for this recording.
I do not understand this beating around the bush on how Tarot, or Astrology for that matter works.. Occam's Razor - They are both influenced by a higher power. What is that higher power? Call it whatever you want to, put whatever box you want to around it. Explain it in your brain however you must in order to cope with the fact that the divine is real, it takes many many forms, and Science alone cannot explain it's intricacy. There seems to be this aversion of acknowledgement on this very simple and obvious fact by a lot of Astrologers and Diviners alike. There doesn't have to be a religious adherence or endorsement here of any kind. Only that you yourself are not the center of the Universe... but rather an inalienable divine part of it.
Originally the fool card was represented by a vagabond, a crazy vagabond and so the bag had very little of anything worthwhile! The dog barks at him as a warning and not because it’s happy! If you don’t know the basic history of the cards, you probably shouldn’t be teaching! Sorry, but these are 101 facts that are super important when contextualising the cards against their historical meaning. Of course, the meanings of the cards have evolved, but you really ought to know the basics if you’re gonna teach!! “I don’t know” followed by some weird cat food story (especially when he has a dog lol) is just poor form!!!

Maybe we could also start referring to the Thoth deck as the Crowley-Harris deck and start giving credit to Frieda Harris’ phenomenal artwork. 😀💖✨

At 1:58:10, when Joy refers to the left side of the diagram, the "pillar of form", as being headed up by Venus, did she mean Saturn??
