According to Know Your Meme, the dropping sunglasses meme was popularised in June 2010, which, coincidentally, is about the same time that the then incarnation of the Doctor in Doctor Who decided that both bow ties and fezzes were cool. That must have been a surprise to the developers since they started work on the game in 2007 and were actually planning to release in April 2010, well before the Doctor got (momentarily) interested in the headwear.
So it would seem that they independently decided fezzes were cool, but they took the sunglasses idea and ran with it for NG+ when the development ran long.
lol i feel so called out :p but yes, FEZ definitely had some small influence on Hero's Spirit.
That first part feels like someone taking a magnifying glass to a Gridiron Football end zone/association football goal and trying to figure out if there's anything special about the pitch. :p
Being in my 40s too, I know the feeling! This is a very fascinating game even if it is sometimes a bit inscrutable.

Ls is the left stick (aka this->🕹)
Yeah, you have to press the stick into the controller _without_ tilting in in any direction.
When I first found out it's a thing, it was like... perceiving a whole new dimension :^)
(the right stick also has this feature - most games use it for rather rare actions)
Maybe time to upgrade your graphics card and go 1080p Brian? 😅
