This song is about Grace Gifford and Joseph Mary Plunkett the youngest member to be shot and killed by the crown fighting for his country he was Irish nationalist, republican, poet, journalist, revolutionary and a leader of the 1916 Easter Rising. Joseph Mary Plunkett married Grace Gifford in 1916, seven hours before his execution. A great rendition of a true irish song by an absolute legend and gentlemen Mr. Rod Stewart 👏
This song reminds me of my great grandfather ( on my mums side) , Tom Barnett, who served in the first world war in France, he got him and mates got shot And killed but my grandad servived they wear laid out on the battlefield and someone heard my gandad moneing and crying out then then they took him to hospital, he had to have both legs amputated so he spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair of course i was only a child when he passed away, but i always remember him, my mums dad served in the second world war, if it wasn't for these i don't know where we'd be today, this is why we should always remember them.

@@gemmabroughton1938 Ouch...Whats wrong with an "Irish Woman" singing it as well Gemma? but agree with your points. The main issue I have is the fact that "Sir Rod" is also of course a "Commander of the British Empire" which he gratefully accepted (I mean, just look at the words on the CBE medal), the irony being of course that Joe and his comrades gave their lives fighting against the bloody "British Empire" D'oh! Just look at James Connolly's last statement for goodness sake. I am English by the way and have sung this song for over 30 years, but there again I not a CBE, nor would I ever accept one as I have a deep love of and respect for, Irish History. Good luck anyway!
Oh My! That was Beautiful. WOW! I've heard the Irish Tenors perform this beautiful song with Anthony Kearns singing lead. Rod puts his own unique touch on this song as only he can. Thanks Rod I needed this tonight🥲
That is the Irish for you. ☘️❤️☘️ I grew up with four Irish brothers and I know that motto was always fight the fight!! ☘️ Unfortunately, we believe that one of our relatives over in Ireland got shot down ☘️. As one of my relatives from America went over ☘️ to Ireland and there was a bloody stain on a half demolished wall with my family name above the blood stain. It probably was true ☘️. So just hearing this song and knowing my Irish heritage. Oh yeah that's exactly how they would do it. ☘️No doubt about it , Honor n loyalty to their country is the biggest cause that any Irishman feels ☘️🙏☘️🕊️🕊️ For all those men that did fight that day. This is absolutely brilliant a song, sweet Rod. Great writing, period, big guy. As a songwriter myself you prove that the creative gene never lets you down and by your sheer persistence in persevering, you show yourself to have a "never-say-die" attitude which is completely and utterly, second to none. In my personal opinion this will always put you in one category of a singer and musician rarely mentioned....a total WINNER. RESPECT to you Rod Stewart. I have NEVER forgotten my father's tears falling when you delivered SAILING to the general public on that programme about guys saving lives at sea(Royal Navy). My father lost his father on The Repulse in WW2. His very words to me after i went out and bought SAILING for him and presented it to him were "...this man's singing took me out to my father to say goodbye to him...i will never forget this song or Rod Stewart for doing that son". Nuff said...my father and i share our love and adoration for Rod and his amazing music.
