Hi Colette So easy to setup, really did only take 5 minutes, if that, and we are first time users of something like this. Install the app, plug it in and away you go.... really simple. Yes, we are so grateful to all of the advertisers that have contacted us but this device was a must have and we are so happy we accepted their offer. The timing was perfect for us to see if we were winning with the sheep's wool insulation.... turns out, we aren't loosing lol. In Canada we have sharing plastic you put it over the window attached to the frame with tape then you use a hair drier to blow warm air on it it shrinks tight you can see through it just like glass but it really helps to keep heat in cold out .

I bought the film and then realised we don't have a hairdryer so had to buy a cheap one of those too. I think I am going to try and get some put on today, especially after seeing the how dark those cold panes of glass were with the thermal imaging camera in the video. We will do an update as I have always wondered how much difference a bit of plastic film makes. From using it previously, I know it stops condensation on the glass, but not sure how much heat loss it prevents. Thank you again for being here.

Are the windows the old single pane windows or are they double pane windows? Or over there I think you say single and double glazed? I know you said you wanted to keep the original windows, but it may be worth it to replace them one of these days, just to keep your house a lot warmer. 🥶❤
The are the the windows that replaced the original sash windows, and then a couple may be replacements of the replacements hahaha. All singles glazed so chilly without a secondary glazing of some sort. It would be lovely to have sash windows in here again.... maybe one day :) You are catching up, but by bit. Thank you :-)
Hi Helen, it certainly won't help but I also think there may be a couple of rubbish bits of wool insulation done by myself. The lime seemed to help with keeping the wind getting under the tiles which in turn kept the loft space a bit warmer, now the lime has all pretty much fallen, the wind passes through quite freely. We plan on getting these temporary ceilings sorted before the cold comes back in Autumn. It is one of the needs to be done jobs. We have a few needs to be done before winter jobs on the list., lets hope time doesn't run out. Thanks for watching and commenting today :-)
I used to have one Cala gas stoves tend to cause a lot of condensation unless you have a flu? If there isn’t then all the damp comes into the room they are bad for that I used to have one, you would switch it on within half an hour. Everything was streaming in condensation.
No, no flue and yes you’re right they do give out a lot of condensation but we do have the dehumidifier running too so hopefully that gets rid of whatever the calor gas puts out there. We have that running every time the fire is on. 😊
Ah, never though of that. Right, I will start counting, you hide. 1, 2, 3..... It really is a good bit of kit. We have used it quite a few times since the video to see what difference things make, like the secondary glazing film on the windows etc.
This is going to be a game changer for you. Very interesting video. Thank you Topdon! Incentive to do some inside pointing, rendering and plastering. Need to fix the tops and bottoms of the walls where stone and/or mortar is missing then put some insulation before the baseboards go on. Old stone houses would hang tapestries on the stone walls for insulation, curtains around the beds, and screens up to direct heat where they wanted it. so a fire screen to stop sparks, then their chair to sit on and a tall screen behind the chair to stop drafts from behind, you can create a nice spot around 20+ degrees to relax in as the screen behind the chair holds the heat from the fire in around the chair. So tapestries and screens weren't just for decoration - they were essential for keeping warm. They also had foot warmers (iron boxes with feet to put coals in) that you rest your feet on while sitting. Some had cushions or a wooden top to protect the box and shoes.
So as Dawn keeps asking Janie.... When do you move over? I am sure we can get a modern sofa bed for you. Sod it, we will put a bed in the living room for you :-) Dawn just said that it would be right up your street and clearly she was right. Yes, the top of the walls are very cold, and although I kept saying slate, when we watched it back, we realised it was the tops of the walls that were showing so cold. Although not done yet, due to everything being done quickly so we can actually love in here, we think we are going to have to bring the rafters in a bit with additional timber and insulated away from the tops of the walls. I am sure we can come up with something for it. This little tool will play a vital part in it all. Thank you so much for the history lesson as every part of it makes perfect sense now you have said it. I love the idea of the foot warmer, now that is right up my street. I'm just under 5ft so I don't take up much room haha. How's that indoor shower coming along? If you put foil insulation over top of the rock wool before you put up the ceiling boards on the slanted parts you will be toasty warm. The foil insulation is breathable and very thin - better than doubling the rock wool. Corners where it is really cold need to be rendered to seal gaps then insulated. Slap some render in the crack in your bedroom (don't forget to scrape out the crack first and damp it) - you will be surprised how much cold that crack is letting in. TLX Gold insulation is classed as roofing insulation but is recommended for use in all stone buildings from the roof to the walls and floors. TLX Gold. installation instructions and recommendations are also provided by the supplier. "TLX Gold has been designed for today’s roofer. Whether it’s a roof refurbishment or new build project it improves thermal performance and eliminates the risk of condensation, it vents moisture like a breather membrane and yet insulates like non-breathable PIR board. Christmas, my Sister popping over for a surprise visit, shopping, life etc and so on. We will get there. It is very cold outside, but we are hardcore, we have to be to shower outside still. It is brilliant, seeing how well our house is insulated with just the phone makes it so simple. No Tracy, there is no new table or bed, you weren't supposed to see those lol. The kitchen is great with the big table and chairs and our bed is oooohhhh so comfy. The geek inside of me 3D printed the sign on the door the second the sale was agreed and had about three revisions before I was happy. When we came over in May for 5 days to start clearing the house, I bought it over with us and was the first thing to be put up somewhere. When you see our intro, look to the left of the front door and on the corrugated steel there is the sign propped up. Thank you with Alan, he can't eat after 6pm today, we will keep you posted. Our renovation is much smaller than yours but I can easily see that having a thermal imaging camera is a really good idea....with a big place like yours I guess that it wouldn't take too long before the camera has paid for itself. You sound freezing. We are currently sat in the kitchen with the range burning away, the calor gas heater at the foot of the stairs and the fire in the bedroom burning and it is still chilly. We are really pleased when we saw no heat escaping outside, apart from the glass in the windows. We really must get the secondary glazing film stuck on and we can see how that works. What part of the world are you in?
A quick Google tells me it is bloody cold at -4 degrees. I thought it was cold tonight at -1. BUT... did you go for a shower outside? I did. Felt like -20 degrees hahahaha. Stay warm and turn the heater up.
@@thecornerhouseproject I took a bath this morning. We just have a small portable electric heater in the bathroom and it was cold. My hairdryer pooped out so I had to go outside with wet hair. It was 37 F. The heater is up and it has been on all day and the room is just barely 60 F. But at least we have a heater now. For years all we had was a woodstove.
That is so cool! (so to speak) The image of the cat lounging in front of the range is worth framing, and/or teaching in science classes. My geek brain would love to see a followup a year or so from now, especially the effects on the "cold corners" as the walls dry out & warm up. (My geek brain also wonders if you could treat the windows as sort of "passive dehumidifiers," by squeegeeing the condensation off of them at appropriate intervals- & maybe putting a rolled-up towel at the bottom to catch any drips- but my geek brain doesn't have to do the work that would involve.)
Nothing like a geek brain, I have one too so this thermal imaging camera is brilliant. We have all seen the heat images before on videos and the TV but to be able to actually have a camera ourselves to use and see first hand is brilliant. We have a Karcher window vac which we use to suck up the condensation on the window panes and we have the dehumidifier running 24/7. We then use the water from the dehumidifier to boil for washing up water :-) We may have a geek video coming up fairly soon for you, depending on your type of geek lol. See you soon and thank you :-)
I wouldnt worry about the cold spots in the corner, thats just cold air coming in from the door pulling down the heat (same around windows too). Great to see the liquid gold coming out of your taps! ;) IN the middle of the night would be great to see the escaping heat from outside!

@@thecornerhouseproject Caravan is Baltic! We stay in the house until the last minute at night and then armed with hot water bottles take on the van. Once your in bed until you wake in the morning, it's absolutely fine. It's generally been around the 3-5C most of the time in there. We have moved our day jobs to the house also as it's impossible to sit for long periods of time in there. The heater will bring it up 8 -10C but that's still to cold for sitting. It's a whole other story if you need the loo in the night🥶

It is brilliant isn't it. But yes, exactly that. Normally the insulation would be put in place and you would think everything is great. Although ours is only for the winter until done properly / a different way, it showed everywhere that needs additional sheeps wool insulation. Oh, so happy to see my two favorite people doing something else interesting. What a wonderful gizmo. How incredibly helpful. and a handy thing to have when doing a project like your house. To think you can see in real time what you need to reinforce against heat loss is just outstanding. Kudos to that company for sending you one. I will remember the name. I think the curtains at the window surprised me the most. I was amazed how much a simple curtain helped with heat loss. Some of those values were pretty staggering. And the baseboard heat loss was amazing. And just so you know, I did not see the table and chairs. Nope, didn't see them at all. It is cold here today. Awww, you are lovely, thank you. It is the perfect little tool for us and just at the right time. All of the cold at the top of the walls upstairs (not slates like I kept saying) shocked us, it is like there is no insulation there at all. The rest of the ceilings weren't bad except for where I had not joined the sheep's wool insulation enough. The curtain were an eye opener. We have put curtains on the landing now and where the cold used to hit us as we went up stairs is no longer so bad, and we are still yet to finish the landing ceiling fully. So hopefully, once done, it will be warm all the way up the stairs. To see warm creeping through the stone wall outside where the skirting board (baseboard) is missing was a surprise. That part of the wall is still damp, so hopefully with it dried out, heat loss will lesson. What table and chairs? No snow here yet, a lovely sunny day. It was 0 degrees C last night and -1 tonight. Water was frozen this morning in the pipes but the water was running by about 1pm. I was outside for a shower tonight at 8pm, that was chilly. Having worked with thermal imaging for several years, I find these type of devices very handy. Suggest you take it outside at night and see where you’re losing heat from inside the house. Remember, there is no such thing as cold, just lower levels of heat. Also, since it works by measuring infrared radiation, you cannot read temperatures through glass. Finally, the device reads surface temperature of the objects within the lenses field of view, it does not measure air temperature. Oh, I had that same cuckoo clock! Bought it in 1972. My son has it now.
I am sure in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing with it you can find out much much more than what we used it for lol. But is really opened our eyes to even a simple thing like a curtain at a door. We knew it made a difference, but to see it really opened our eyes. Will night time make a difference, or are you thinking because of it being colder outside? We will get the film up at the windows soon and hopefully prevent more heat loss via the windows. We bought him the cuckoo clock a few Christmases ago and I think it was 40 odd years old. Sadly a cog for the music box is broken so clunks when playing and it can sometimes stop at 5 mins to the hour. I think it needs a service really. @@thecornerhouseproject Night time allows the exterior walls to cool and not be affected by the heat gain from the Sun. Also makes it easier to see where the building envelope is losing heat.
My guess was right.... sort of. Makes sense as when you watch the video back, on the landing you will see one side is warmer than the other, which was caused by the morning sun on the slates on the east side. We will have to brave the cold and see what it looks like. Thanks again pitsnipe.

Really interesting video. Looking forward to what you do for heating and insulation improvements. Tip you may already know: To move heat from a wood/coal stove around the house, the general idea is to send cold air toward the stove, not blow heat from the stove to other areas. I experimented with my wood stove and found this to be the case. We have a fan at the far end of our living room on the floor blowing cold air to the stove. The heat then comes around through our kitchen to the living room. I'll warm up a few degrees relatively quickly. No amount of trying to blow heat from the stove area did that well. We'll allow convection to carry the heat upstairs, and there's one room I'm still trying to get right. It's fun to try out different things! Super video, stay warm!
Thanks Ken, for watching and giving such great comments. Radiators is the plan, lots of them please, especially at the moment as it is a little chilly. We will get there though with heat all around. Yes, I had watched something where they were allowing the cold air from upstairs drop down to where the stove was, this then heated the cold and the warm rose up the stairs to the living areas. You can really feel the heat on the landing, so might not be a bad idea to try. The downside is having grates in the floors above and sound travelling. I will have a play with the fans though and see how it goes. Thank you again for your informative comments :-)
Great video, very interesting. I can feel the heat in the bedroom from the fire below ,and my neighbours can feel it in their hall. The calor gas heater could be adding to the condensation in the parlor ,maybe you could check this ?
That is one downside to living in a detached house, there is no one to help keep our walls warm. The walls on the landing are a great source of stored heat from both fires though. Even though the ceiling is still to be done, the heat on the landing is lovely. Yes, the calor gas heaters cause loads of condensation but we have a Karcher window vac and the dehumidifier running 24/7 to counteract this problem. Also we have the window film to put on, so I am really hoping this will reduce condensation too. Always nice too see your comments Clive :-)
I’ve only ever seen thermal used for hunting ghosts…it’s nice to see it being used for what it’s meant for. I like seeing the cat prints. Now I’m wanting one to help with our basement finishing…just hope I don’t find a ghost with it

What a great piece of gear, that is going to be so helpful, in pinpointing the heat loss, It must inspire you to push on with the insulation, after seeing the demo, how could you not have that technology at your fingertips it is a must-have item. I would go as far as to say that it should be part of every household, it's a troubleshooter xx❤
Isn't it great! We held off finishing the landing ceiling so we could film the difference between the slates and then the insulated areas and although not a massive difference, the heat held within the insulation is great. Since the video we have done three windows with the cling film style secondary glazing and you can feel the difference from one window with it to another without. It also stopped the condensation when the tumble dryer was on. With the thermal imaging camera, we may not have been in such a rush to get more curtains up and the glazing film. Yep, if every house had one, I think a lot of money could be saved on heating.... providing the you have money to be able to fix any issues. This is where we will be slower with getting things done. Hope you are both doing well xxx
If you hear something put and use that, you'll even be able to see if someone, or something has walked past already. I have it on my old Cat S90 phone and have kept it just to use the thermal imaging. Might be getting one of those instead.👍
That’s a good idea! I did get Ben a night vision wildlife camera for Christmas, we just need to find a good place to mount it to capture the local wildlife, so that will come in handy for what you’re saying too! lol so far we’ve seen a fox (we think) or maybe it was the little Pomeranian that lives up the lane 🤣 because we only saw a brief glimpse of its back end!
I always thought you had to have a dead air space to insulate effectively. So that's why the sheep wool batton is very interesting as it doesn't need it. Wonder how drafts are stopped between the slate roof and the walls then. I would insulate the floors between the floors, as then you can get more cozy if it gets really cold and you want to heat only one or two rooms, and besides the heat will go up the stairwell anyways. Curtains are great and valances keep the drafts coming out the top, If you notice you most likely do not have condensation on the windows where you put up the plastic film. HOwever, if your window panes arent airtight the film will stop drafts and if you put up another film on the outside, you will get a dead air space and much better heat retention. The lime walls will continue to warm up but give yourself permission to keep the stove on until the trees have leaves again - or at least buds!
Good morning :-) Between the slates and the top of the walls, in between each rafter is lime, lots of it. This stops any draughts. Looking at the thermal image though, it certainly doesn't stop the cold in the top of the walls. We will need to come up with something to remove these cold areas. Good point with insulating the ceiling/floor space. At the moment we don't have enough of a heat source in the bedrooms to do that, but in the future we will be insulating between joists. The stairwell is a nice warm space and looking forward to finishing the ceiling up there. We are yet to do the film on the windows, never though about doing it on the outside too. It will be interesting to see if the camera shows a difference when we do a window. Oh, the stove is always on, one room we always have heat in. As always, thank you so so much :-)
It was great to see how much heat a curtain will keep in, or away from cold windows and doors. Ooooh, my love is for our electric blanket but last night I forgot to turn it on. Now I am sure I did, but getting into bed all excited about the warm at 1am to a freezing cold bed was a massive shock to both of us. Twice I have done that now. Yeah it’s quite fascinating to wander around the house and point it things! It’s quite an amazing bit of technology and I think it will keep on coming in handy throughout all the things we will be doing. I especially liked the water running cold and then suddenly turning yellow as it heated up!

It is a really good piece of kit. The insulation has worked very well. We’re very pleased with it so far. Once we put ceiling panels or boards up downstairs we will put more insulation in there too. Get it all nice and warm for the winter later in the year.

Are the windows the old single pane windows or are they double pane windows? Or over there I think you say single and double glazed? I know you said you wanted to keep the original windows, but it may be worth it to replace them one of these days, just to keep your house a lot warmer. 🥶❤
The are the the windows that replaced the original sash windows, and then a couple may be replacements of the replacements hahaha. All singles glazed so chilly without a secondary glazing of some sort.
It would be lovely to have sash windows in here again.... maybe one day :)

Could some of the cold spots on the ceiling be where there is missing lime on the underside of the tiles.
Hi Helen, it certainly won't help but I also think there may be a couple of rubbish bits of wool insulation done by myself. The lime seemed to help with keeping the wind getting under the tiles which in turn kept the loft space a bit warmer, now the lime has all pretty much fallen, the wind passes through quite freely.
We plan on getting these temporary ceilings sorted before the cold comes back in Autumn. It is one of the needs to be done jobs. We have a few needs to be done before winter jobs on the list., lets hope time doesn't run out.

I used to have one Cala gas stoves tend to cause a lot of condensation unless you have a flu? If there isn’t then all the damp comes into the room they are bad for that I used to have one, you would switch it on within half an hour. Everything was streaming in condensation.
No, no flue and yes you’re right they do give out a lot of condensation but we do have the dehumidifier running too so hopefully that gets rid of whatever the calor gas puts out there. We have that running every time the fire is on. 😊

This is going to be a game changer for you. Very interesting video. Thank you Topdon! Incentive to do some inside pointing, rendering and plastering. Need to fix the tops and bottoms of the walls where stone and/or mortar is missing then put some insulation before the baseboards go on. Old stone houses would hang tapestries on the stone walls for insulation, curtains around the beds, and screens up to direct heat where they wanted it. so a fire screen to stop sparks, then their chair to sit on and a tall screen behind the chair to stop drafts from behind, you can create a nice spot around 20+ degrees to relax in as the screen behind the chair holds the heat from the fire in around the chair. So tapestries and screens weren't just for decoration - they were essential for keeping warm. They also had foot warmers (iron boxes with feet to put coals in) that you rest your feet on while sitting. Some had cushions or a wooden top to protect the box and shoes.
So as Dawn keeps asking Janie.... When do you move over? I am sure we can get a modern sofa bed for you. Sod it, we will put a bed in the living room for you :-)
Dawn just said that it would be right up your street and clearly she was right. Yes, the top of the walls are very cold, and although I kept saying slate, when we watched it back, we realised it was the tops of the walls that were showing so cold. Although not done yet, due to everything being done quickly so we can actually love in here, we think we are going to have to bring the rafters in a bit with additional timber and insulated away from the tops of the walls. I am sure we can come up with something for it. This little tool will play a vital part in it all.

If you put foil insulation over top of the rock wool before you put up the ceiling boards on the slanted parts you will be toasty warm. The foil insulation is breathable and very thin - better than doubling the rock wool. Corners where it is really cold need to be rendered to seal gaps then insulated. Slap some render in the crack in your bedroom (don't forget to scrape out the crack first and damp it) - you will be surprised how much cold that crack is letting in. TLX Gold insulation is classed as roofing insulation but is recommended for use in all stone buildings from the roof to the walls and floors. TLX Gold. installation instructions and recommendations are also provided by the supplier.

The indoor shower..... it is up, it looks great, but no water yet. Christmas, my Sister popping over for a surprise visit, shopping, life etc and so on. We will get there. It is very cold outside, but we are hardcore, we have to be to shower outside still. That or stink hahahaha

It is brilliant, seeing how well our house is insulated with just the phone makes it so simple.
No Tracy, there is no new table or bed, you weren't supposed to see those lol. The kitchen is great with the big table and chairs and our bed is oooohhhh so comfy.
The geek inside of me 3D printed the sign on the door the second the sale was agreed and had about three revisions before I was happy. When we came over in May for 5 days to start clearing the house, I bought it over with us and was the first thing to be put up somewhere. When you see our intro, look to the left of the front door and on the corrugated steel there is the sign propped up.

I hate to think what that thing would show in my house. I'm sitting here wearing a heavy wool jumper, a down vest, wrapped up in a down blanket freezing my buns off with the heater on!
You sound freezing. We are currently sat in the kitchen with the range burning away, the calor gas heater at the foot of the stairs and the fire in the bedroom burning and it is still chilly.
We are really pleased when we saw no heat escaping outside, apart from the glass in the windows. We really must get the secondary glazing film stuck on and we can see how that works.

@@thecornerhouseproject I took a bath this morning. We just have a small portable electric heater in the bathroom and it was cold. My hairdryer pooped out so I had to go outside with wet hair. It was 37 F. The heater is up and it has been on all day and the room is just barely 60 F. But at least we have a heater now. For years all we had was a woodstove.
That is so cool! (so to speak) The image of the cat lounging in front of the range is worth framing, and/or teaching in science classes. My geek brain would love to see a followup a year or so from now, especially the effects on the "cold corners" as the walls dry out & warm up.
(My geek brain also wonders if you could treat the windows as sort of "passive dehumidifiers," by squeegeeing the condensation off of them at appropriate intervals- & maybe putting a rolled-up towel at the bottom to catch any drips- but my geek brain doesn't have to do the work that would involve.)
Nothing like a geek brain, I have one too so this thermal imaging camera is brilliant. We have all seen the heat images before on videos and the TV but to be able to actually have a camera ourselves to use and see first hand is brilliant.
We have a Karcher window vac which we use to suck up the condensation on the window panes and we have the dehumidifier running 24/7. We then use the water from the dehumidifier to boil for washing up water :-)

@@thecornerhouseproject Caravan is Baltic! We stay in the house until the last minute at night and then armed with hot water bottles take on the van. Once your in bed until you wake in the morning, it's absolutely fine. It's generally been around the 3-5C most of the time in there. We have moved our day jobs to the house also as it's impossible to sit for long periods of time in there. The heater will bring it up 8 -10C but that's still to cold for sitting. It's a whole other story if you need the loo in the night🥶

It is brilliant isn't it. But yes, exactly that. Normally the insulation would be put in place and you would think everything is great. Although ours is only for the winter until done properly / a different way, it showed everywhere that needs additional sheeps wool insulation. It is nice to also see how a fire lit yesterday is still heating the house the day afterwards.

Oh, so happy to see my two favorite people doing something else interesting. What a wonderful gizmo. How incredibly helpful. and a handy thing to have when doing a project like your house. To think you can see in real time what you need to reinforce against heat loss is just outstanding. Kudos to that company for sending you one. I will remember the name. I think the curtains at the window surprised me the most. I was amazed how much a simple curtain helped with heat loss. Some of those values were pretty staggering. And the baseboard heat loss was amazing. And just so you know, I did not see the table and chairs. Nope, didn't see them at all. It is cold here today. It is the perfect little tool for us and just at the right time. All of the cold at the top of the walls upstairs (not slates like I kept saying) shocked us, it is like there is no insulation there at all. The rest of the ceilings weren't bad except for where I had not joined the sheep's wool insulation enough.
The curtain were an eye opener. We have put curtains on the landing now and where the cold used to hit us as we went up stairs is no longer so bad, and we are still yet to finish the landing ceiling fully. So hopefully, once done, it will be warm all the way up the stairs.
To see warm creeping through the stone wall outside where the skirting board (baseboard) is missing was a surprise. That part of the wall is still damp, so hopefully with it dried out, heat loss will lesson.
What table and chairs?
No snow here yet, a lovely sunny day. It was 0 degrees C last night and -1 tonight. Water was frozen this morning in the pipes but the water was running by about 1pm. I was outside for a shower tonight at 8pm, that was chilly.

Having worked with thermal imaging for several years, I find these type of devices very handy. Suggest you take it outside at night and see where you’re losing heat from inside the house. Remember, there is no such thing as cold, just lower levels of heat. Also, since it works by measuring infrared radiation, you cannot read temperatures through glass. Finally, the device reads surface temperature of the objects within the lenses field of view, it does not measure air temperature. Oh, I had that same cuckoo clock! Bought it in 1972. My son has it now.
I am sure in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing with it you can find out much much more than what we used it for lol. But is really opened our eyes to even a simple thing like a curtain at a door. We knew it made a difference, but to see it really opened our eyes.
Will night time make a difference, or are you thinking because of it being colder outside?
We will get the film up at the windows soon and hopefully prevent more heat loss via the windows.
We bought him the cuckoo clock a few Christmases ago and I think it was 40 odd years old. Sadly a cog for the music box is broken so clunks when playing and it can sometimes stop at 5 mins to the hour. I think it needs a service really.

@@thecornerhouseproject Night time allows the exterior walls to cool and not be affected by the heat gain from the Sun. Also makes it easier to see where the building envelope is losing heat.
My guess was right.... sort of. Makes sense as when you watch the video back, on the landing you will see one side is warmer than the other, which was caused by the morning sun on the slates on the east side.
We will have to brave the cold and see what it looks like.

Tip you may already know: To move heat from a wood/coal stove around the house, the general idea is to send cold air toward the stove, not blow heat from the stove to other areas. I experimented with my wood stove and found this to be the case.
We have a fan at the far end of our living room on the floor blowing cold air to the stove. The heat then comes around through our kitchen to the living room. I'll warm up a few degrees relatively quickly. No amount of trying to blow heat from the stove area did that well. We'll allow convection to carry the heat upstairs, and there's one room I'm still trying to get right. It's fun to try out different things!

Yes, I had watched something where they were allowing the cold air from upstairs drop down to where the stove was, this then heated the cold and the warm rose up the stairs to the living areas. You can really feel the heat on the landing, so might not be a bad idea to try. The downside is having grates in the floors above and sound travelling.
I will have a play with the fans though and see how it goes.

Great video, very interesting. I can feel the heat in the bedroom from the fire below ,and my neighbours can feel it in their hall. The calor gas heater could be adding to the condensation in the parlor ,maybe you could check this ?
That is one downside to living in a detached house, there is no one to help keep our walls warm. The walls on the landing are a great source of stored heat from both fires though. Even though the ceiling is still to be done, the heat on the landing is lovely.
Yes, the calor gas heaters cause loads of condensation but we have a Karcher window vac and the dehumidifier running 24/7 to counteract this problem. Also we have the window film to put on, so I am really hoping this will reduce condensation too.

I’ve only ever seen thermal used for hunting ghosts…it’s nice to see it being used for what it’s meant for. I like seeing the cat prints. Now I’m wanting one to help with our basement finishing…just hope I don’t find a ghost with it

What a great piece of gear, that is going to be so helpful, in pinpointing the heat loss, It must inspire you to push on with the insulation, after seeing the demo, how could you not have that technology at your fingertips it is a must-have item. I would go as far as to say that it should be part of every household, it's a troubleshooter xx❤
Isn't it great! We held off finishing the landing ceiling so we could film the difference between the slates and then the insulated areas and although not a massive difference, the heat held within the insulation is great. Since the video we have done three windows with the cling film style secondary glazing and you can feel the difference from one window with it to another without. It also stopped the condensation when the tumble dryer was on. With the thermal imaging camera, we may not have been in such a rush to get more curtains up and the glazing film.
Yep, if every house had one, I think a lot of money could be saved on heating.... providing the you have money to be able to fix any issues. This is where we will be slower with getting things done.

If you hear something put and use that, you'll even be able to see if someone, or something has walked past already. I have it on my old Cat S90 phone and have kept it just to use the thermal imaging. Might be getting one of those instead.👍
That’s a good idea! I did get Ben a night vision wildlife camera for Christmas, we just need to find a good place to mount it to capture the local wildlife, so that will come in handy for what you’re saying too! lol so far we’ve seen a fox (we think) or maybe it was the little Pomeranian that lives up the lane 🤣 because we only saw a brief glimpse of its back end!
I always thought you had to have a dead air space to insulate effectively. So that's why the sheep wool batton is very interesting as it doesn't need it. Wonder how drafts are stopped between the slate roof and the walls then. I would insulate the floors between the floors, as then you can get more cozy if it gets really cold and you want to heat only one or two rooms, and besides the heat will go up the stairwell anyways. Curtains are great and valances keep the drafts coming out the top, If you notice you most likely do not have condensation on the windows where you put up the plastic film. HOwever, if your window panes arent airtight the film will stop drafts and if you put up another film on the outside, you will get a dead air space and much better heat retention. The lime walls will continue to warm up but give yourself permission to keep the stove on until the trees have leaves again - or at least buds!

Between the slates and the top of the walls, in between each rafter is lime, lots of it. This stops any draughts. Looking at the thermal image though, it certainly doesn't stop the cold in the top of the walls. We will need to come up with something to remove these cold areas.
Good point with insulating the ceiling/floor space. At the moment we don't have enough of a heat source in the bedrooms to do that, but in the future we will be insulating between joists. The stairwell is a nice warm space and looking forward to finishing the ceiling up there.
We are yet to do the film on the windows, never though about doing it on the outside too. It will be interesting to see if the camera shows a difference when we do a window.
Oh, the stove is always on, one room we always have heat in.

It was great to see how much heat a curtain will keep in, or away from cold windows and doors. Ooooh, my love is for our electric blanket but last night I forgot to turn it on. Now I am sure I did, but getting into bed all excited about the warm at 1am to a freezing cold bed was a massive shock to both of us. Twice I have done that now. I think a timber plug on it might be a good move.

Yeah it’s quite fascinating to wander around the house and point it things! It’s quite an amazing bit of technology and I think it will keep on coming in handy throughout all the things we will be doing. I especially liked the water running cold and then suddenly turning yellow as it heated up!

It is a really good piece of kit. The insulation has worked very well. We’re very pleased with it so far. Once we put ceiling panels or boards up downstairs we will put more insulation in there too. Get it all nice and warm for the winter later in the year.
