  • On this episode of Ultimate Barrier Testing, we will compare the performance of the 308 Win to the 30-06 and the 300 Win Mag on 4 different targets. Each target is worth 25 points (winner takes all), for a grand total of 100 points. Whichever cartridge ends up with the highest score will be the winner. Testing was setup at 50 yards. Steel is A529 grade 55 mild steel. 1 inch = 25.4 mm. Thanks for watching!

Where 30-06 steps away from 308 is when throwing heavier bullets. The 308 loses powder volume to accomodate longer bullets, where 30-06 has ample room for the slug and the extra powder starts to really pull its weight.

Another thing to consider that if you don't hand load, at current year (late March 2024) .308 is 65-70 cents a round, 30-06 is 90cents to a buck a round and 300 win mag is $1 - $.125 a round. So unless you really need that range or penetration (long distance open field shots against large animals) .308 is the best bang for the buck. 30-06 is just 30 extra cents worth of shoulder pain, apparently.

my go to rifle for deer is still a 30-30 but that being said i own a 308, a 30/06 and aquired a 300 w mag from an uncle, aside from the 30-30 for Michigan deer ill take that 06 any day over the others with the options for the various bullet weights its a far better all around rifle, for range if i sight in all rifles including the 30-30 at 110 yards drop target back to 225 the 30-30 still hits dead ( high mount scope on a marlin 336c) the 308 hits 1 inch high with high rise scope mount, the 06 3 inches high with a high rise scope mount and 1/4 inch low with level mount, the 300 3 and 1/8 hoigh with high rise mount at 500 yards the 308 hits low by 27 inches, the 06 low by 13 and the 300 w mag 12 1/2 inches all three using high rise and of course the 30-30 hit 5 feet low now i was using a 4foot by 8 foot sheet of 3/4inch plywood, had the target or aim point set 5 inches from top of plywood my place of shot was just about level with top of the plywood, the reason i use 110 yards is simple that is the distance where i sit 90% of the time deer hunting to the edge of the thick pines yes i can shoot into them but the distance is 100% known at a glance

Years ago, we had a dump truck leaf spring as a gong at 100 yards at our outdoor range. It was hit with 30 06 and everything below. Just blew the paint or rust off it. I bought a 300 win magTikka m65 deluxe left hand bolt rifle and tried it 3 times on the leaf spring. When we walked up to it, there were 3 jagged holes through it. I was quite surprised. It was removed after that. I’m of the belief that the hardness of the spring steel was great up to a certain point but the extra foot pounds of the 300 was enough to cause the fractured holes. Note they were a little jagged, not as clean as the holes in this video. Ar500 is a whole different ball game of course.

Factory 308 out of the box being almost equal to 30-06 is the best it will ever get. The 30-06 has the extra case capacity to push deep-seated heavier bullets without decreasing the powder charge or push lighter bullets with increased powder charge. Much better versatility when you handload or with specialty ammo.

Definitely not the same armor piercing projectile inserts that the boy scout troop I was with found on the firing range of Fort Sill, OK, which I think were tungsten carbide. Even after stripped from the copper/lead sheath of NATO ammo, those had needle sharp points.

Among the stuff I bought were 40 or 50 WWII 30-06 AP rounds. I don't know if they were for a Garand or for a machine gun. They were loose. I pulled them and discarded the cartridges because I suspect they had corrosive primers.
I also gave the wrong weight of the projectiles. They are 164 gr, not 174. One odd thing I found about the projectiles. They are FMJ Flat Base as pulled from the cartridge, but the steel core looks like a boat tail projectile.

Mine tested magnetic as pulled but only the steel core is magnetic with lead in the tip of the projectile and lead in the base to make up for the shorter steel core versus the longer gilding alloy jacket. My understanding is that the 308 was developed to try to mimic 30-06 ballistics while utilizing a shorter action. To accomplish this, a faster burning powder is necessary. With that in mind, seeing little difference in the results between the two isn't surprising in the slightest. As others I seen here mention, the 30-06 is superior to 308 when it comes to loading heavier bullets such as 200 or 220 grain due to the greater internal volume of the case.

    • @BenAtTheTube

Yes. After some years, powder was improved, but could not be used in military .30-06 because it would damage the M1 Garand mechanism. The .308 was specified with the improved powder in a smaller case to exactly duplicate the military .30-06 with the same bullet. Modern bolt rifles are made to use modern .30--06 hunting ammo with higher pressure/velocity. I like 3000 fps velocities which I can get from either .270 Win 130 gr or .338 Win Mag 185 gr, a little faster than standard weight .30-06 150 gr,

You should try some .303 Mk7 ball ammo with the aluminium nose-cone under the jacket. This will go through 1/2” mild steel and leaves a prodigious sized hole. I tested all this stuff in the 1970’s. New Zealand made CAC Mk7 ball, 1958 headstamp was more effective than Lake City 30/06 M2 ball ammo at penetrating steel plate. I am not sure why but maybe an artefact of the bullet design, I only know what actually happened when we tested them. The 30/06 Black-Tip AP was a different story - the tungsten penetrator seemed like it hardly slowed down and left a small, clean hole. Whereas the M2 ball just heavily cratered the surface. All tests at 100 yards. That’s what happens when 16 year old spends all his spare cash on surplus rifles and ammo, before girls and motorcycles changed it all!
198gr military 8x57 spitzer FMJ was very penetrative against tree stumps. Never did try it on the steel.
Much later on I found a .308 with 168gr Hornady match pills reliably penetrates 10mm mild steel plate.
The “pissant” .303 was the real surprise, but when you consider the real performance 174gr @ 2440 fps vs the M2 150gr @ around 2740 fps there’s not much between them. Norma used to advertise their commercial .303 150gr ammo as doing 2700fps. The .303 Mk8Z ammo was more than equivalent to the WW2 30/06 in any practical scenario. Bullet efficiency with a heavier but streamlined profile starting out slightly slower usually trumps light, faster loads at distance. BC is king. But you can get a lot more out of the 30/06 than the military loads then in common use, with careful handloading. All these cartridges were loaded for reliability in varying climates and conditions so hot-rodding was less than desirable.

I experimented with pulled M2 163 gain AP bullets loaded for the 300 Win Mag several years ago. My load consist of 74.0 gr. of Nobel Sport's Vectan Tubal 8000 powder, Federal Cases and Winchester LRM primers. Shot from by 26 inch heavy barrel Remington 700 Long Range rifle, that round has an average muzzle velocity of 3,344 fps +/- 20 fps. Based on your 300 Win Mag test result, I believe my round would have went through the 1 inch steel plate.

Not necessarily because this is only one bullet weight. The 30-06 still is great because you can get it in as light at 110 grains to as heavy as 220 grains from factory. So, it has that versatility going for it. It's more of a jack of all trades round. Not necessarily the best but able to be used in a variety or application. As for recoil that's all up to the firearm used to shoot. My m1 shooting 30-06 has way less recoil than my buddies ar10 shooting 308.
