    I brought the PM300 from you 5/6 years ago after seeing this and it remains one of my favourite meters. Wish I'd purchased a second one before you stopped selling them.

    I bought a Kingdom 450V 3200 count pocket meter about 22 years ago. From Korea. The favorite of Canadian Otis repair people. It's had a good life and served me very well. I've only changed the battery in it less than 10 times in all that time.

    Yeah, Dave, this is main channel stuff, and a great meter, I was pondering buying one I've spotted in the local market, now Im sold!

    I was just about to say I saw one of these on eBay, so I looked again, and it's you :)

      Yep, that's me. Don't buy on ebay unless you have too, ebay charge >10% in fees so the price is jacked up accordingly.

  • @illustriouschin

    Could you compare this to another small meter in this price range to help us to understand why we should be excited for this one?

    • @EEVblog

      Yes I can, and that's coming.

  • @ckm-mkc
    @ckm-mkc 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Wow, that costs as much as one of my used Flukes.... (it's around $65 US) It's about 40% more than I expected.
    It's very nice, but I buy these small meters to leave in cars, seems like a bit much.

    • @EEVblog2
      @EEVblog2  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You wouldn't buy this to leave in the car glovebox.

    • @EEVblog2

      Try the Amprobe PM55, it's just as expensive.

      But Hioki make a similar size/quality meter that's only $50 and it's made in Japan - www.amazon.com/Hioki-3244-60-HiTester-Multimeter-Resistance/dp/B008S0CFDE - just saying....

    SANWA makes great kit. I do prefer when it's "made in Japan"
    That being said I do wish it had a better Capacitance threshold as it tops out at 600 uF according to the specs. I usually require at least 4000uF.

  • @TheDigitalAura

    Think I'll stick with my Aneng AN8008 as a pocket meter. Has way more functions than this and I kinda like the bag. No amps ranges at all, I can't bring myself to give it a thumbs up :p

    @7head7metal7 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    7:58 the left solder connection of C5 seems a bit loose. C4, C6 and C14 look a bit off, too. I don't know how long those will survive some dropping or vibration.

    • @izimsi
      @izimsi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would say it is barely even soldered
      edit: C14 and C12 on middle top don't look properly soldered as well

    • @zrobotics
      @zrobotics 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also don't like how the crystal is just hanging in that cutout, supported only by it's leads. For $70, they could really put a drop of silastic to keep that from vibrating. Hell, even hot-glue would be an improvement.

    • @DONK8008
      @DONK8008 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That crystal also has what looks like flux residue on the solder joints which Dave would bash any of those $5-10 meters for.

    I know another couple of CAT IV 300V pocket DMM: HIOKI 3245-60 and 3244-60 but they are not TrueRMS.
    I have Brymen BM27 as my daily Pocket DMM. I like it for EF detection - more useful than I originally thought.

    70 bucks, jeeze. Some people are sitting on a bag of gold I guess. And to be honest, I don't see why this is so much better than that $25 one. It's just a matter of perspective on what you see on the package. If that cheap one was being sold with max 300/600V nobody would care.

  • @DoRC
    @DoRC 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Nice but it's the same price as a Fluke 15b+ (at least in the states).

    • @Broadcast1Channel
      @Broadcast1Channel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The fluke also has AC and DC current ranges, removable probes and in addition to CAT III 600V the Fluke is also specified as CAT II 1000V.
      The only thing the fluke does not have is the frequency measurement. Anyone ever use the frequency measurement?

    • @plusplusplusfuly
      @plusplusplusfuly 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do R/C! Fluke 15b+ isn't TrueRMS dmm

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ffff Ssss now that is a good point! I will add that, even without RMS it is 1% accurate between 40 and 400hz on a sinusoid which should be sufficient for most people who are looking for a meter in this price range.

    • @zrobotics
      @zrobotics 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the appeal here is the size of the meter, the only pockets that a 15b will fit in are cargo pockets.
      However, it still seems like a bit of a gimmick, or only truly useful for a small niche. How often are you needing to carry around a meter without also needing some sort of tool bag?

  • @MatthewSuffidy
    @MatthewSuffidy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    HY12P66 if it ever stopped moving. If you use the case in the way demonstrated it looks like there is a chance of stabbing the probe wires with the probe.

  • @ElectraFlarefire
    @ElectraFlarefire 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Must admit I'm a fan of the UNI-T UT120 series for 'pocket meters'(Only CatII, so low voltage only) that can be thrown into a bag and left in toolboxes because it performs well at it's price point and is a great meter to give to people who just want to test the occasional thing and to replace the old trickydick yellow meters, however this is a far better one indeed.
    The Sanwa's leads are far better, has True RMS and of course a MUCH higher safety rating. I suspect the performance is better too.

    Lacks of NCV function ufortunately, though it looks really well constructed. Cat IV 300V..maybe..In terms of usability for most Cat III jobs APPA iMeter5 looks more usable, more portable and it based on a RISC processor with outstanding accuracy, it also has NCV and an automatic selection which works in 99.999% of all cases. No relative mode, but it spot on anyway and also iMeter5 can be calibrated normally and it is absolutely great for any professional use. It also has two spark gaps and additional protection as well as great probes with grooves, so they can be attached to wires easy if required. Cost of iMeter5 is also better. It is not True RMS but in most applications you will not need it and if you a technician who carries a lot of tools you will appreciate the weight of this model. Practicality versus marketing...oh..and rotary switch operated with one hand and has robust construction plus metal brass insert for the bolt holding rear cover...oh..and what absolutely blowes this Sanwa multimeter out of the water..iMeter5 with long enough quick release tape can be attached to wrist of your hand and with auto selection etc it becomes a really useful tool when working on low voltage circuits and it virtually makes it portable and even "wearable"..!

    A custom label would be cool. But don't put it in yourself. Not worth the time.
    If you do go that route, just slip them in the box and let the user crack the case open and put them in if they choose. (Also avoids Sanwa complaining)
    Should be cheap enough to have a bunch of them plotted and printed on some nice UV resistanrt paper.

    85 bucks for a pop-up meter isn't alright though. At least not for the home-gamer use I would intend it for. So I'll stick to the 10-20 bucks china meters (you'd be impressed what you can get for that amount of money, if you look carefully).

  • @SuperSSSSooonniicccc
    @SuperSSSSooonniicccc 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wish I could justify this, but I've got a Fluke 15B+ I got for $90 resold (unopened) which doesn't have a max/min, relative, or true rms. But... at the same time I have an oscilloscope (Siglent SDS 1104X-E) which can do True RMS for me, and I could work out a way to do max/min with the oscilloscope. Plus the labs at my university has Fluke Bench Multimeters that can do relative, max/min, etc. Just not the capacitance measurement.
    Paying (US based) $67 for this is really expensive even with the current discount. If it was $48 USD like the converter told me without shipping, I might get it. But that shipping cost is horrible. If Dave was on amazon and I could apply my prime shipping, I'd be really happy. But...that's a lot of hassle for him.
    And of course, these are my own opinions. If you don't agree and think I'm being entitled, then good for you. Think what you want and have a nice day.

  • @harshbarj
    @harshbarj 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice "review" but it's a bit expensive for what it is. I'd rather carry around the larger, but far cheaper NKTECH Mini NK51E. Once you add the case to this pm300, it's likely about the same size. Sure it's only cat II rated, but at that price, you can blow a few up and still save money.

      Yes and no. Part of the same former conglomerate it seems, and may or may not have been the same subsidiary at some point. To explain the name, Sanwa
      (三和) means something like joint venture of 3 and is referring to the three banks that originally merged and formed a conglomerate. Den (電) means electricity and is found in many words that have to do with electricity and electronics.

    I really don't like the soldered on leads, I think that even if they had a proprietary plug, I would forgive them for doing so, in such a small package. That would have scored higher with me, but hey, I'm not currently paid to think.
    I think this meter would be a revelation for guys in the field. You don't get true RMS readings, let alone the genuine CAT ratings in devices this small. For the people who say it's too expensive, I'd say when it doesn't blow up in your hand when you're poking a 415v bus bar then it's well worth the outlay.

  • @DarianCabot
    @DarianCabot 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm a big fan of Sanwa gear, but it's a shame this one has no current measurement. Even just a couple hundred mA measurement range (i.e. the ability to measure 4~20mA signals) would've sold it for me as a good little run around meter.

    • @DarianCabot
      @DarianCabot 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Reply by future me: Having current measurement on a pocket DMM with fixed probes is probably more dangerous than it's worth. It would be easy to accidentally set the meter to current and then short out a power rail! Current measurement is probably best left to meters with pluggable probes and a dedicated current probe input.

      EEVBlog Well at least you make this one clear, you certainly don't seem bothered to make it clear when companies send you things to review and keep. But it doesn't matter how much one tries, getting something you're selling or for free will always bias you. I suspect if you had just randomly gotten this in a mailbag you wouldn't have been so glowingly positive about everything.

    auchh.. Dave Im useally saluting you, like here is no tommorow dear friend.
    but Im starting to wonder what kind of backbone you actually are carrying.
    nahh' get real you would have slaughtred any other meter for this level of continuity tester. 10:54 and would have stated numerous scenarios where such an level would not been valid and wold have been rubbish & crap, and now you calling it beautifull..
    please dear aussie, take you ass down, and stop flapping up there for Sanwa corp in the hope they like the smell.
    It tumbles your otherwise very competent voice and know'how..(if you short for earnings or can pay the bills, then state it perhaps we can help out.. you gotta a lot of friends out there, who appreciate your doing..

      Wow, that triggered over the level of a continuity tester?
      Yes it's bit on the low side, but it's not bad.

    Can you please give me a multimeter for free? No, I'm just joking, but in fact, I can only afford a 20 or 30€ multimeter, which still seems to do the job. So, since I'm no electronics professional, I will just stick with the affordable stuff.

      Keep your eyes open on ebay for a used fluke 27, they're available in that price range. Has all the basic features, excellent build quality, and the measurements are probably more trustworthy.

      zrobotics That would have to be a very lucky pick on ebay. I just looked, no used multimeters of this model in Germany, and the cheapest one was from the USA for 40€ + 20€ shipping, so it's twice my budget. I'll stick with the cheaper stuff. Don't need super-accurate measurements either, like .001V or so...

      Should have looked closer, I thought that was 30GBP not EUR, also didn't realize the price premium outside of the US was quite that steep. I paid

    All the other senwa I can find with similar function average around 30-50$ less with exception of this specific model. Now we know what the dave tax is.

    • @EEVblog2
      @EEVblog2  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Err, no, it's dictated by Sanwa wholesale price. My price is currently around US$61 with discounts codes, to sell $30 cheaper I'd be losing money on each one.
