The smaller Bryman is selling as the "EEVblog Brymen BM235" for US$125 in blue. The dual display one is selling on Amazon USA as the "Greenlee DM-820A" for US$170 in green. Priced in November 2019.
Dave, Just a quick note to say thanks for publishing interesting in depth content so regularly. You're by far my favourite subscription - even though I don't understand half the stuff you say... Thanks for being amazing, and I slightly hate you for making me consider changing my University choice from Computer Science to Electrical Engineering. Stay awesome!
Also found Brymen multimeters as very good meters with Fluke features for a third of Fluke price. Had BM257s for a while (Dave, you are guilty 😀) - very handy meter on both bench and outside. Recently bought BM789.
Dave, I don't think you ever did a full review and teardown analysis of the top of the range BM869 that you show in this video, did you? I reckon that would be a really popular video, and I for one would be really interested to see it, if you ever get a chance to do so. Or, if you already have done a whole video on that specific video and I've missed it, sorry about that, it didn't come up in a quick search in youtube vids. Cheers!
It's a bit friggin' rich making snide remarks about he Brymens' uV and pF low limits when the Brymen meters are 10x the sensitivity (lower limit) of Dave-o's beloved Fluke 87-v on Volts/Amps and match the 87V's low Capacitance! Fluke 87V: 100uV; 100nA; 10pF (10mF max) BM869: 10uV; 10nA; 10pF (25mF max) BM857: 10uV; 10nA; 10pF (10mF max) BM257: 10uV; 100nA; 10pF (3mF max)
I personally like the unlatched continuity testers since they can be used to diagnose bad connections in switches and such. If you get scratches in the sound there is a bad connection. The latched ones can't be used for that.
I was wondering, is air gap really does that well at isolating? I believe what using plastic gap will do a lot better at isolating, so why not just to leave nice plastic gap on PCB in those areas?
Dave, from experience it is not so realistic to measure autorange speed by just shorting the probes together in ohms metering. I bought a GWInstek that is really fast at doing this but when you measure a higher resistor (in fact, higher than 0) it take ages to select the correct range. Horror.
I love the twisting/bending test as a meter for gauging the build quality of the product. Imagine peoples reaction if you actually did this while shopping for electronics in public?
Fuse access fom outside? I'm not quite sure you're serious or joking. If you blew a fuse, first you'd want it under a shitload of covers and weather seals, in order not to risk injury. Second, you'd certainly want to open the meter and have a look inside after the blow-up. You might be surprised at what you've found..
what would be a good clamp meter? and must you use 2 of them to clamp test the wattage on an amplifier? I'm new to testing things with meters and would like to learn more. great vid, thanks!
+EEVblog what is your favourite meter that you use, not necessarily the most feature rich or most expensive, but the one that you keep coming back to, and always reach for?
What do you think of the Amprobe AM140-A? I got one for $180 and so far it seems to be a very nice meter, advertised digits and accuracy are both phenomenal compared to other similar priced meters.
Agree here, that would have been very quick to do! Maybe the results were so good that Dave didn't want to share them with everyone... not just yet anyway! :-)
+Hyss I don't know for sure, but since it's on a MOV, that could be the case. I've also seen MOVs heatshrunk together with a thermal fuse or thermistor in order to detect overheating
I wonder if they could have possibly forgotten to put the diffuser in for that horrible backlight. It's just so bad I can't believe it's part of a meter in that class.
Hi .. What stereomicroscope is it you use? I'd love a review of some, as I've recently ventured into the electronics business, and i find it really hard to find one with vga output on top of scope.
How much does Brymen charge the other manufacturers to rebatch the meters for them? There website looks like it’s from the mid 90´s....no wonder no one ever heard of them. But eh seems like they are making good mulitmeters.
How did you learn all these components and how they work? Im decent with electronics but when you get to these small printed boards i have no idea what im looking at.
+65KFoster Experience? If you spend your time building circuits, you're going to pretty quickly come to remember what each one looks like. If you have any idea how multimeters are constructed, it's also fairly easy to deduce by looking at how the traces are laid out. Also, after watching one or two of these videos, you'll start becoming an expert too!
After watching your video review on the Bremen bm257 I want one but finding it hard to purchase one, I think there's only one on eBay for over $200 including posting fee, do you know of any other places I can get one with better price
+Yanni YZF I agree with RPdigital! I've used TME more than a few times now and it's surprising how quick delivery is to the states. Poland to Michigan in 3 days. (my experience...)
this multimeter is obtained with the green lee brand the DM860A, but the DM830A is the same as the fluke 87 v with a little more functions these green lee multimeter are excellent nothing to compare to fluke
I tried to get a Brymen 860s here in the U.S. but cannot. I wrote the Company and they said.... We are Polish distributor of Brymen meters and we are focused on distribution in Europe. Regarding your question, as I checked main parameters, Greenly 860A is BM869s. So, you can order this item under Greenly brand.
excellent! i wanna buy my first 'good' multimeter, and i think i found my meter :D. the bm257 looks good for what i'll do with it. I hope they ship it to the Netherlands some how...
Yea that uh , that uh BM 257 looks good , the backlight and the one screw back, Sure I will lose the screw immediatly but I can just wrap the open back in the rubber armor . I mean its not waterproof with or without the one screw back
Meh, Brymen... would love one, but can't get them in the states .... Greenlee are available here but at the prices they charge it doesn't make sense not to get something else, like Agilent.
Dave, just return it to get another to see if the probe still existing,I think that probe is only for this device!By the way there you have expensive device for lab use. Thanks anyway.....Kostas.
Our digital "smart" energymeter we got several years ago uses that same shitty way to light up its display, you can't read a damn thing on it. (I think it is an Iskra brand meter).
Well it's a Taiwanese company, that explains the "uniquely designed" packaging. Lots of Taiwanese company do make good stuff but their marketing is poor.
Hi Dave, Seeing the dual display high end Bryman meter here, just wondering if it, or any other meter can "dual display" both a voltage and current at the same time?
you know that typically you measure current in series and voltage in parallel ? You would need three probes for that for starters. Unless you want the voltage drop across the shunt resistor, but then you can figure that out from the U=RI equation.
Hey Dave, these product reviews are getting old at least for me. I like you older videos in which you did more circuit analysis type blogs. The USB power supply and, for example, why a zener is used in OPAMP circuits, voltage regulators cut-off voltage, etc... Don't get me wrong, love product reviews, but come on, sprinkle some more of electronics stuff in there...
Dave, seriously, why do you hate Brymen multimeters? I mean, you made a 20 minutes video long for this awesome multimeters, but you had dedicated a lot of videos for the UNI-T crap, what happen?
I bought a BM857A a week ago and they changed the backlight, it's now orange and works perfectly.
These meters are sold on the US Amazon site under the name Greenlee Model DM-820A and DM-510A
The smaller Bryman is selling as the "EEVblog Brymen BM235" for US$125 in blue.
The dual display one is selling on Amazon USA as the "Greenlee DM-820A" for US$170 in green.
Priced in November 2019.
You can find the 235 on brymens own page for 89
That small trimpot near the buttons adjusts the diode test voltage, mine was set to 2.900.
Just upping the current would help a lot I'm sure. Maybe could add a diffuser plate too?
We want a review of the 869 !!!
Pleeease, do a review of it !
Great multimeter !
You could even compare it with the Fluke 87V !
Also found Brymen multimeters as very good meters with Fluke features for a third of Fluke price. Had BM257s for a while (Dave, you are guilty 😀) - very handy meter on both bench and outside. Recently bought BM789.

That was 7 years ago. What have you done for us lately, meter wise?
Regards Dave...great collection of Brymen multimeters.
Read the spec sheets.
Maybe they forgot to put it in on the production line. The pictures of the meter in the link you provided. show a much more even illumination.
Which one is the best multimeter for everything. ( home, industrial, electricians and for electrical users)
It's a bit friggin' rich making snide remarks about he Brymens' uV and pF low limits when the Brymen meters are 10x the sensitivity (lower limit) of Dave-o's beloved Fluke 87-v on Volts/Amps and match the 87V's low Capacitance!
Fluke 87V: 100uV; 100nA; 10pF (10mF max)
BM869: 10uV; 10nA; 10pF (25mF max)
BM857: 10uV; 10nA; 10pF (10mF max)
BM257: 10uV; 100nA; 10pF (3mF max)
He need to make a living right?
Thanks to your video, I bought a BM257
I personally like the unlatched continuity testers since they can be used to diagnose bad connections in switches and such. If you get scratches in the sound there is a bad connection. The latched ones can't be used for that.
I have a wattmaster DMM 4001. Bought it in 2007. Still going strong on the same batteries I think. Nice DVM.
Moving it to the edge would help more. Right now it is shooting through a semi-reflective screen.
New $100. shootout Please!!! I want to see how the 257 holds up against the others.
@@maxfactor4209 Indeed it is.
got a bryman 257s comes with silicon leads, really nice bit of kit... love it..
+stephen williams Silicone, with an e... silicon leads wouldn't be very bendy...
Good meter but has issues with diode and LED testing because of limited voltage output.
I like the look of the 857. Reminds me of the 80 series flukes.
What are the 2 extra button pads for?? Those aren't on the outside of the case...
how accurate is this compared to fluke?
What is the difference between 257 vs 257s?
257s as 257 replacement have better test leads and new model fuse out of box. Also optional RS232 serial interface capability for measurement logging.
I was wondering, is air gap really does that well at isolating? I believe what using plastic gap will do a lot better at isolating, so why not just to leave nice plastic gap on PCB in those areas?
The backlight was very amusing, reminded me of a 1990s Batman chepo LCD wristwatch!
I Have two of the 869 and they are great.
Dave, from experience it is not so realistic to measure autorange speed by just shorting the probes together in ohms metering. I bought a GWInstek that is really fast at doing this but when you measure a higher resistor (in fact, higher than 0) it take ages to select the correct range. Horror.
Just checked there site and they have a BM900 series to isn't that ther top of the line the instead of there BM869??
I love the twisting/bending test as a meter for gauging the build quality of the product. Imagine peoples reaction if you actually did this while shopping for electronics in public?
Fuse access fom outside? I'm not quite sure you're serious or joking. If you blew a fuse, first you'd want it under a shitload of covers and weather seals, in order not to risk injury. But how does it compare to eevblog 121GW??? Let's do an updated review.
what would be a good clamp meter? and must you use 2 of them to clamp test the wattage on an amplifier? I'm new to testing things with meters and would like to learn more. great vid, thanks!
The back light is clearly defective.
+EEVblog what is your favourite meter that you use, not necessarily the most feature rich or most expensive, but the one that you keep coming back to, and always reach for?
Probably his fluke 87-V
What do you think of the Amprobe AM140-A? I got one for $180 and so far it seems to be a very nice meter, advertised digits and accuracy are both phenomenal compared to other similar priced meters.
Can u make a review of Mastech MS8229 multimeter ? there is almoust no videos about that multimeter in youtube
Nice. Thanks Dave.
Agree here, that would have been very quick to do! Maybe the results were so good that Dave didn't want to share them with everyone... not just yet anyway! :-)
Is the heatshrink on components to contain them if they explode?
+Hyss I don't know for sure, but since it's on a MOV, that could be the case. I've also seen MOVs heatshrunk together with a thermal fuse or thermistor in order to detect overheating
The trimmer should be for the display's back-lit voltage.
I wonder if they could have possibly forgotten to put the diffuser in for that horrible backlight. It's just so bad I can't believe it's part of a meter in that class.
BM257s seems to have the new probes with it by default :) Love that thing
Yep. For me 257s turned out awesome for field work. Very convenient size for carrying around.
I'm somewhat of a Fluke fan, but I'm very impressed. I'd say anyone considering a used Fluke for 100 dollars should also consider one of these.
excellent video as always. Bonus, I'm one of the sub-301 crew today! Woohoo! (seriously, I am a pretty big fan of your vids, keep it up!)
Can't find the Brymen TBM251 in Europe.
Is it available under a different brand name?
Thx
In Denmark and Germany brymen goes under the brand Elma - elma bm251 ;-)
This maybe could be helpful:

Any info on caltek instrument meters?
Hi, what do you think of the Brymen BM257s ? Is this the best multimeter on the market in this price range ?
Yes!
EEVblog will there be a review of the Brymen multimeters and/or a complete teardown?
Remco Meeder Yes, I think those multimeters deserve more attention in the EEVBLOG lab.
"lab"? seriously ?
Anyone, know ware you can get these in the UK?
Link dont work

+Yanni YZF I also agree with the other two posters. I recently purchased a BM257 from TME and it arrived in a few days (California, USA).
this multimeter is obtained with the green lee brand the DM860A, but the DM830A is the same as the fluke 87 v with a little more functions these green lee multimeter are excellent nothing to compare to fluke
Bah! It hasn't even a transistor tester. I bet it emits a whine when you switch on the backlight.
Dave! Talk about the U1273AX please :P
None of them multimeters on ebay very strange
Bm257 looks nice for the size almost a pocket meter
9:49 I see what you did there. Nice reference to your PickKit 3 rant!
Not as such. Interesting idea.
I tried to get a Brymen 860s here in the U.S. but cannot. I wrote the Company and they said.... We are Polish distributor of Brymen meters and we are focused on distribution in Europe.

What is B.T.C?
So Dave bashes the wiring on the extech dmm but praises the one on the brymens... uhmmm...
Sneaky marketing campaign, as you now have EEV branded Brymen meters for sale.
A Fluke meter is not a fluke?
I've got some moldy meters. (cheap parts meters, purchased on a famous internet auction site)
don't you have any rusty excavators?
Check out 9:15 for the LED Backlight. "What a steaming pile of turd! It's retaaaaaded." Love it!
Looks like a defective component, or several.
i have an old brymen digital meter from toy store , so surprised with its quality
excellent! i wanna buy my first 'good' multimeter, and i think i found my meter :D. the bm257 looks good for what i'll do with it.

Pretty much the other way around here. $250 for the U1271A here, which might be my next meter never the less.
Dave, just return it to get another to see if the probe still existing,I think that probe is only for this device!By the way there you have expensive device for lab use. Thanks anyway.....Kostas.

Well it's a Taiwanese company, that explains the "uniquely designed" packaging. Lots of Taiwanese company do make good stuff but their marketing is poor.
hahahaha the backlight skit rant my rolling
Why didn't mention the flying battery wires on the small one? I thought that was one of your pet peeves.
i got a paper with my multimeter saying calibrated in finland and a bunch of values handwritten. and it is a cheap one 0.o
Why your eyes getting BIGGER ??
Dave's been doing a lot of product reviews, but I guess he's obligated to do them.
I thinkthat multimeter with the crappy backlight is ridiculous primarily because the company has other models as shown with impressive backlights
I've seen $3 meters with excellent backlights on them...this is terrible...
Yes the, the the 9 volt battery ain't where its at, They they they ain't cool, In a pinch you can't find a 9 volt battery
Dave, stop messing about with the stuff that you are trying to review. Got to pause your videos to actually see the products.
