We had a couple Nike missile bases around me. Also an air strip and a radio station for radar. I’d like to take that tour you did. I find it interesting. The radio building later was a training center and the walls were so thick, cell phones would not work. They recently tore the old radio tower down due to age. We have a building we lovingly call “building 104” that was full of Cold War stuff. Fall out shelter signs. Drinking water barrels. Those white civil defense helmets. Little triangle signs on stakes that say Rad, Bio, Chem indication a contaminated area. Geiger counter’s. We also still have a backup radio repeater for the White House there. It’s old but a guy comes every year and tests it still. It was full of asbestos tiles and insulation we had to get removed. We have an underground tunnel from the radio building to building 104 and to the base of the old tower.

Now that's pretty cool. If you do make the decision to visit HM-69, the southern most campground in the Everglades has electric (it was further than we wanted to be relative to our cycling). The original barracks and offies are still there AND still in use!
