Good stuff. I'm the media tech for a large church and teaching volunteers to do what you ask and also have a sense of urgency is really tough and that's assuming you can find one. I do 2 services on Sundays with 2 livestreams, 5 cameras, liturgy and song lyric slides, 2 individual mixes and lighting and I do all the prep and work myself. Then there's the 7 or 8 concerts a year and any special events in the church. I've had a few volunteers but there was never any indication that any one of them took what we did seriously so in the last almost 4 years I've had 2 Sundays off....once for covid and once for a hurricane. All I look for is an ability to understand and follow directions and my current volunteer.....well, lets just say he's lacking. Your dialog of making corrections during services is right on. Too many people (I've run into this lately) think that a sound check means you can just walk away and everything is done. They don't understand that this just gets you in the ballpark and when 700+ people come in all the dynamics change. I'm enjoying your videos. Again, good stuff.

The church needs to hire another tech guy it sounds like. 😅

I am a service programming director and production director and like 5 other things as well, so I feel your pain. I pray for the right people to join your ministry and take that stress off of you. I know how it feels and it's not fun. Is contracting some professionals an option? It's good to mix that in sometimes. We are a small church, but I prioritize this at points to give myself some relief on Sundays. Today for example, I hired a FOH guy because I normally do it while doing 100 other things so it hasn't been where I want it to be. Now it is WAY better and it was totally worth it. Good luck!

@@BSP1822 I've tried the local companies around for people looking for fill in work and help with concerts (I have a major one tomorrow night). They'd come out and work the show for $400. That's a little more than I make for a 12 hour day and since we just finished up a $1.3M renovation thanks to the last hurricane the church is gun shy about spending money. They're going to have to soon. I'm tired. Thanks for the suggestions. Keep them coming.

Keep the volunteers you have and cultvate an atmosphere that they are helping tell a story. The greatest story. If we do our job right, we are invisible. That's why all the media guys wear black. The camera iris, when it is closed a bit cannot pick up a camerman wearing all black (even our coms are black) We draw the line at underwear. If someone notices lighting or sound or camera work and complements us on it, then we have not done our job fully. Men in black and they don't call me agent N either.

@@normpeterson9311 unfortunately the volunteer that I had wasn't committed enough. He'd go golfing on Sundays and I'd get a 30 minute notice that I'd be broadcasting 2 services on my own and if I had a concert (we do about 10 a year) he'd be a no show. So now I have a 20 year old who's being paid but has absolutely no knowledge of sound or video and was hired "because he's eager". People who make these decisions should know what my job is but unfortunately they're more clueless than my new assistant.

Thank you James Attaway for your channel. I love you colorful and descriptive terms AND showing us the technique on your board. I have watched a few of your videos, and will explore and view others. I am a sound tech at my church, where we have two mixers - one for FOH and the other for the stream. I have been doing the latter for about three months (not every week), but have yet to solo on the FOH. So much to learn! Thank you again.

Nice to have a sound tutorial that starts out with characteristics and creativity. So many just start with the gear and how to operate it.
When I train I like to emphasise personal qualities like humility, servant hood, team orientated, timekeeping, etc. Then we talk sound then gear.
We have a drummer who’s light, I ask him to use sticks another who’s a rock drummer I got him lightning rods. Both happy 😊

I'm just a volunteer. I thought this would be just something only our leaders might care about. But it’s really amazing. He hits on so many core issues in getting the sound right. And he structures the problem, how the sound balance impacts the message, amazingly. The video gets so into where all our minds need to be. I finished totally engaged.

If you’re being serious, he has videos where talks about cleaning up the mix. Those videos take a closer look at HPF.

Also: Watching it at a faster speed, the cut @5:36 is hilarious. That WOULD be a very wise drummer 😅

love it James. I have tried to give your videos to the sound tech chosen. He does to 'rotisserie' style of live worship. Set it and forget it and sit down in front. I need instruction on how to approach and arrogant sound tech!

Yikes. Hands on the board at all times! There is no such thing as set and forget! You gotta be riding vocals and DCAs all the time.

Tell him he's driving a bus. Would you want a bus driver to leave it on cruise control and let go of the wheel? Of course not. You have to make changes as you go.

Great video!! What is the ideal number of volunteers to help with lights sound and computer each Sunday? Besides myself light guy and the computer we have dame three every Sunday but we have 12 other people who want to help. Any suggestions?

I think 4-5 people in rotation on sound is a good balance. Not so many that you get rusty, not so few that you get burned out.
