  • We head through the High Atlas Mountains along an epically scenic route. A night at the Dades gorge sets us up for a long ride to Merzouga.

Nice trip! I rode on many of the same roads as you two, maybe similar time period, I was there in May, 2023. Yes, that big area reminiscent of the Grand Canyon, beautiful. Was an I retesting road, then switchbacks of Dades Goege, I enjoyed the desert in Merzouga. Cheers from the USA.

This mountains are an open book for geologists and earth born scientists, what a scenery (in the beginning)! Somewhere I read, that this roof mountains were a location of some Sergio Leone western movies. Congrats, a very nice trip! I will do it in May/June 2024, KR Henry

It is a fascinating country with huge diversity of landscapes. The north is surprisingly green farming countryside, then hit the middle Atlas and its forest then just rock and stone in the high atlas. Further south its just sand and rock! A stunning bike destination.

Well, what can one say but it needs courage and determination to travel to the outback. Very exciting and energising in the mix! /

What was the off-road loop to avoid the n12 ? At minute 7:44? Can you show the map of it
    Thanks

Hi, it was just a 40 minute gravel track up over a ridge then to a village, back to the N12. Was better than sitting on tarmac. Posted the map in the community page

Given your experience would you take an Africa Twin 1000cc or a much lighter CRF450L. Clearly the AT is better on the tarmac but looking for a balanced view? And second question, full knoblies or something like E07 as a 50/50 tyre? Planning for September 24

If you’re travelling alone and planning to go through proper sandy stuff then definitely the lighter bike. But mostly the riding is on tarmac, gravel, stone tracks. The AT will be ideal with E07, which is what I used. The only place the 450 will really make sense is if you intend to do a lot of technical off road. My son did it all on his KTM1190, carrying camping gear! But the desert section was tough for him, I had a slightly easier time on the smaller BMW. When I return, the desert stuff is where I want to be. So will opt for a 450 type machine. It is a fairly long haul to get there, so the single thumper could be hard going. Fly/hire will be my next trip.

Thank you for responding. I want to explore the country but I’d normally avoid technical stuff when alone because of the higher risks and often the remoteness of such trails. Thinking of doing the Portuguese ACT route as the way across Spain/Portugal.

The AT will be perfect, keep the luggage as light as possible. Morocco is an excellent destination, get south of midelt and its fantastic riding.
