I don’t know if you can answer this. But, I bought a lovely old concrete bird bath at an estate sale. The birds do come there to drink. But, after the water has been on the concrete for a while it turns a reddish brown. I don’t know if this is the water sediment or some thing coming off of the concrete. I would be happy to coat the inside of this birdbath with something that will not harm the birds. Do you have any ideas about this?
The reddish brown algae is natural and your best bet is to change the water frequently. A shallow bath is better for the birds and easier to keep clean. We do sell a natural enzyme that you can add to the water each time you change it that helps fight the algae.
I was told the birds feet and feathers in extreme cold will freeze in extreme cold. Is this true? I just had 5 sparrows taking a bath in the heated birdbath and it’s in the 20’s degrees
Birds feet are covered in scales and shed water very quickly. Ducks, geese and other water birds stand in freezing cold water all the time. The key to this is that the capillaries in their legs are super close together so that the warm blood coming from their heart warms up the cold blood coming up from their legs. In my 40 years, I have never seen documentation of birds legs freezing or them getting stuck to metal.
