@@tomato2517 Lol nobody's deck was built for anything in season 1, tbh the same goes for battle city for the most part. They didn't really start leaning into the archetype thing in the anime until Yugioh GX.
Weevil improved Yugi deck by throwing away Exodia, otherwise It would have been brick city every duel. Imagine playing exodia with only a draw spell in the deck
Season 1 was memorable because the plot was built on clear, coherent stakes. Yugi wants to rescue his Grandpa, Joey wants to save his sister's eyesight, Kaiba wants to rescue his brother, and Pegasus wants to revive his wife. Additionally, Duel Monsters existed more as a tool for the writers to add unpredictability and drama to a duel than as a literal game.

"It's for kids" isn't a real argument, there's much better points Joe could have used to defend Duel Monsters. The manga was better. And its ok that it doesnt follow irl card game rules cuz the manga came before the konami card game was even a thing. It was meant to be a fictional card game, this was before they planned to make a real version with more balanced rules. The manga also cared more about telling a story than it did about selling a toy, and the anime cut out lots of character development the manga had. And for people who think Kaiba should have died, the manga shows him in a coma after that mind crush. So even you Kaiba haters get thrown a bone. And if you really want a card game anime where the characters follow the rules of the actual game, go watch Cardfight Vanguard. The original, not the awful reboot.
One more thing i forgot to note is before konami made the card game, there was another version made by bandai, only sold in japan. The bandai version of the yugioh card game was much more accurate to the version played in the manga and anime. When you watch or read duel monsters, youre seeing the bandai version of the game. I'll say it. This show actually has a lot of iconic good stuff that is like just anime not Yu-Gi-Oh. Iconic childhood stuff. Good jokes, solid main characters in Yugi and kaiba. Very decent antagonists. But it also left a sense of wonder and awe at like the random weird power lore, the random deep character commentary and backstories, and hell I'll say it the ass pulls. I liked the awe inspiring ass pulls I liked seeing how the fuck they break the game to get out of shit situations. @@Tsweeney12584 Duke is not main cast. Duke is a side character that hangs with them a bit more often. Same for Rebecca. Tristan is actually consistent with his likable traits and yet his and Joey's past as bullies show their two sides, with them being extremely loyal but hot-headed. Tristan also holds a bit of a special place as someone bad at dueling but good in the rare instances physical action is needed in this backwards card game dominated world. Make fun of Tea all you want but she honestly is a pretty important character at certain points, especially to the pharaoh's growth, and overall the bond of the main crew of 4 is better than any other series. Even if you want to debate this, Yugi/Pharaoh, Joey, and Kaiba are strong enough that my statement is fair because of how uniquely strong they are. I'm biased towards Jaden and Yuya but they're no contest compared to Kaiba.
Ah, Yu-Gi-Oh!. The anime based off a card game from the manga, that people think is the same game as the Konami one, and then think the players are cheating or don't know the rules. Even though it's like playing Ocarina of Time, and someone who plays BotW asking why you don't run out of stamina.

The only serious flaws with the script are that Neil and Asana don't get proper ceremonial duels and Yuga Goha got shafted for a far less interesting final boss.
Trump was literally so wrong to start out. Complaining about the rules in Duelist Kingdom is dumb because the game itself didn't even exist in real life.
