  • Old staircase in house gets rebuilt and modernised. Main tear out and rebuild took a day and the finishing, painting, flooring were done gradually over time to fit in with the main renovation.

    Great job. Have to admit, i was skeptical on the hardboard, but it came out great

      I was also a bit skeptical, but chose it because it was thin and hard. It didn't paint as nicely as I hoped. I was just back there recently, after 3 years. It still looks good, but if doing again I might try something different.

    That is a VERY nice re-fit.
    Now I have a good idea what's in store for me and can only hope the job turns out half as nicely when I do mine!
    p.s. I got here after watching the girl who had the giant blackhead removed. Your video was much more interesting.
    (Apparently, they don't know how to use soap and water in her neck of the woods... yuk!)
    So that's 1 more view for your video. :)

    Thanks for the video. I'm planning to redo the stairs in my house and it's nice to see it done before trying to do it myself!

    Wow man! Excellent work! Night and day....I would have never guessed that they were truly really the same set of stairs. Really good work, although you putting your finger/thumb right next to the nailer where you are putting the gun makes me nervous. But, I'm just a homeowner DIYer.

    Great Job !!! Well done from start to finish. Thanks for keeping the viewer in mind while making your video. I hate a bunch of useless talk. Oh and the Animals playing is an extra point! I have a rental built in 1925, it has some beautiful wood in it. I was working a plumbing issue the other day and going up the stairs, two have developed cracked treads. The lady that rents it is a fitness freak, not a small person either. I asked if she works out on a stair machine, she said no, I use the stairs here. Had to show her the fractured 93 year old treads. I'm surprised she couldn't feel it under her feet. I had to explain the home is as sturdy as they get, but it is not a gym. Looks like I have to add "No running on the stairs" as a condition of the lease.

    Just curious without the door/floor or painting etc how much would just replacing stair/stringer/risers/frame cost?

    • @GumbootZone
      @GumbootZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The construction part of it took a full day. Most contractors would charge between $450 and $650 depending where they are. Wood and materials would be extra.

    Excellent work! I want to replace my stairs. I'm good at DIY but i'm not sure if I could do a good job of stairs. Existing stairs are so squeeky its ruining the feel of the house. Already paid a guy hundreds to "de-squeek" them and all he did was shove some glue and screws in. Made maybe 10% improvement, so stairs are still horrid. Full rebuild for DIY enthusiast a disaster waiting to happen?

    Good video and great work. In the future, step to side when possible to show more of what you are doing. Do you have to replace the sides of the stairs every time if they are straight and level?

      +Wayne “imbestone” Best No. If they were set right to start with, then we could've got away with just new treads. I played with the camera angle a few times, but it was hard to get a good position that showed the view properly.

    cool! Quick question. In America we would say you are a trim carpenter (or finish carpenter.) I think you're in Australia. Is your profession called a joiner? We don't use that word any more, we did in the 1850s though, thanks.

      I'm a New Zealander in Canada. I'm mostly a framer, but I also do some lighter finishing carpentry. Not really sure what the term is in NZ because down there, I was a dairy farmer.
