A few months back, when my father was first admitted to the hospital, I would send him your videos. He loved watching. After his eyesight failed, I would tell him about what you were doing. Even when he couldn't get the words out anymore, I'd tell him what happened. The man that taught me how to be self-reliant, a volunteer firefighter for over 45 years, the man that taught me to drive manual on a 1969 Camaro Z/28, passed away last week. The turnout for the wake was incredible. The teary eyed firefighters when the bapipes played amazing graze at the funeral was a tremendously emotional scene. Now I instill those values and ethics into my son. We'll never forget Robert Moore 9/7/56 - 3/11/23
Condolences to you and your family. My dad died 20 years ago today. No bagpipes but my eulogy kinda rocked the house and I know he would have approved.

My condolences my friend. Lost my father in 2017 who was a phenomenal mechanic and taught me so much, sold his first pride and joy 1968 c10 step side which he gave me as my first truck, but when he was sick I sold it to help pay bills. I kick myself everyday. That is the short story. Here's to our dad's that are here, who have passed and loved continuously everyday for what they taught and gave us. Cheers my fellow VGG Family. May we continue to pass on our knowledge love support and passion to our kids and or loved ones for the love of hot rodding as a family.
Keep it all old school. No Ls swapping or EFI. Big cube, carb, cam, heads, 4 wheel disk. You know the deal. This is without a doubt my favourite car in the VGG stable and I am excited to see what you have in store for Liberty.
I agree up to being my favorite. Lol. To each their own, but I'm quite partial to his buicks. The grand national is my 2nd favorite. But I have a huge heart for all his projects. Also partial to the ford A's. Those are a totally old school hot rot material, there again it's just my opinion.
Same here, or if you are going to run a turbo no digitals keep it all analog.
There's nothing wrong with an LS or E.F.I.... Old school small blocks AND big blocks have been done to death compared to ANY amount of LS or E.F.I. cars out there today. As long as it's quick, it makes NO difference if a guy has a LT5 or and old ass 396 under the hood. People telling other people what they "should" or "shouldn't do" with their own cars is really getting old. Buy your own ride, and do what you want with it.
People told me I'd NEVER end up with a quick or reliable car using an N/A Oldsmobile big block, and I was just throwing money down the toilet, but guess what?
It runs single digit quarter mile E.T.s all day long, and survives just fine. 🤷🏻

This feller is an animal. He takes less days off than any full time employee. Still manages to chill with the family n help his little humans he's responsible for. I think Tennessee was a great move. Year round content n not trying to kill a guy in the snow. Thanks you to the VGG crew.

Absolutely gorgeous Chevelle! My first car was a '70 Chevelle. I bought in the summer of 1987 and I still have it. For now, I'd leave the 406 in it, but when you do decide to build it, I'd stay old school and go big block and front disc brakes. Leave those wheels on it, they look incredible on that car! PERFECT sibling for Independence! Keep doing what you're doing Derek, this is the best automotive show in existence!

Maybe a Power Glide. 4.88's sounds like a good choice, and a blast from the past too. Just my thoughts, but it would be a shame to have a turbo punched through that beautiful hood. I feel like your channel was made specifically for me. I agree with so many of the things about how you live your life. Your gratitude to your viewers and how you all blend as a vibrant family is just the best. In addition, you bring your ideas to the common person like me. Since I don't have the time or place to do what you do, I get so much out of this. I've grown up around cars and mechanics all my life. Our family owned a Chrysler/Pontiac dealership from before I was born until the mid eighties. In addition, I owned 'walkers" for most of my cars. Up until recently, I did most all repairs myself. A guy starts to value time enough to pay to have some things done. Your shop is just the best. Your level of professionalism is awesome. Btw, this Chevelle is one of the nicest I've ever seen. And "Zip Ties and Woodchips"! Hahahaha. I'm also a musician.

Beautiful car with an awesome story. Looking forward to seeing which direction you go with it. But I have a couple of suggestions. 1) Invest in some fairly nice fender covers (I know, it's wierd, but that paint really is perty), and 2) consider putting a wrap on it. You could go with an updated Independance or totally new Liberty scheme, while keeping and protecting that awesome blue paint that has been on the car for years. Whatever you do, or don't do, I can't wait for the next part of the story.

I would love to see another engine build series like the first Independence engine build you did in the old milking barn shop in Minnesnowta. That was one of my more favorite series of episodes of VGG. Build a mean small block that can still be run in drag and drive events. Learn us some stuff Derek! Beautiful car, great history. Time to continue its history.

I honestly don’t know how you manage to get so much done in a week that you do. Husband, father, garage designer, a master mechanic, in my mind. Because you talk about what you do in a way that no matter if you’re a mechanic or a gal (I’m 75) knows nothing or a gal/guy that has a whisper of car info. I thank you for being you. There are a lot of “influencers “ who can barely talk, then those whose ides, skills, language skills, know how’s just blows my mind.

As a scenic and architectural photographer for going on 36 years it warmed the old heart seeing you collecting vintage cameras. I was given the privilege of photographing the oldest AMC Dealership in the good ole US of A a couple years back. Talk about cars back all along the tree rows, that was the place. Man watching that old Chevelle making passes sure brought back memories. In my late teens/ early twenties, I used to run 1/8th mile on Friday nights. There was an old boy (he was mid to late 40s) there had one. We developed a fierce but friendly rivalry. Even after they closed that track, we remained friends for 25 years, and he's the godfather to my kids. His grandson now has that car, and it's still throwing down high 12s twice a year in his memory. RIP Frank Olson 1951-2019
I could really see a couple of different ways to go with this. I think I would for sure keep it old school, either the 400, or a big block. First, put a shifter in it that you're comfortable with. It would be the perfect home for the big block from Independence, which is what I think most would want to see. It would be great to take the 400 to the next level though, with aluminum heads, roller cam, higher compression, etc etc. 4 wheel disk conversion for sure!

Hey brother that car would've been quick in its day in a eigth mile and I'm probably about to tell you something you already know if you hold it in low gear a turbo 400 will shift itself around 6000 you are right that you need to shift before then until it'll make power over 6000 however the time you lose with the shifter acting up you'll make up letting it shift on it's on because trust and believe it don't miss a lick it shifts quick and hard
You can also flip the linkage where it hooks at transmission from the bottom to the top which will make the shift pattern like a reverse pattern
If the bracket mount doesn't have top and bottom linkage option you can be creative or buy a linkage bracket that do

Man, that is one *SWEET* Chevelle! If a guy gets that shifter straightened out, and a decent radiator, I think it could run a 12 flat in the quarter with a few timing and tire mods. Talk about low budget racing, that's it right there, Derek!! What a great ride.😄👍🏁 *EDIT:* I just went back and looked at your test and tune video, and looked at the distributor. You'd be wise to upgrade that to an HEI unit, and open your plugs up to .045 for some easy horsepower on that small block!😉

Nothing to laugh about a build that runs 12s in the quarter, kept up in such beautiful condition, and slapped the same time down decades later. The previous owner really loved that car. So cool you got the history of it. That one definitely has a soul to it.

71's my favorite year for muscle cars. It was no rocket, but a 1971 LeMans was my first car, and I've noticed since then that 71 was a great year for American cars, and your Chevelle just proves the point. Love this channel, keep at it!

So glad you named the "new" Chevelle Liberty. I was one of many who liked that name and suggested it. For those of us who love our country and its' history, having Liberty as a name made perfect sense. Love your channel and watch every episode. The best channel on TH-cam in my opinion.

Hi Derek I just wanted to thank you for all the videos you post over the last tree years first my wife Lorna passed away and I am finding it very hard to cope with. Then my son got knocked down and had a catastrophic brain injury thank God he came through that after being in a coma for 3months Benjamin has been home for a year he is walking speaking I am just So blessed to have him i retired to care for him, when I see your videos and you with your son’s and wife it just fills my heart ❤️ with love for you all, I’m sure I don’t have to say but love and cherish them all as it con change in a heart beat sending Love from Scotland God bless you all.

Hi Bill. I also have had a few losses that took me a while to get over. First my Dad died of cancer in 2000 which hit me REAL hard. He was the greatest guy I've know. When he worked he WORKED. He held every production record at the factory he worked at called Precoat Metals in St. Louis so they let him set his own hours which he immediately started working on Saturdays and Sundays for time and a half and double time on Sunday. He worked 20 hrs each day, came home and slept 4 hrs and went right back in on Sunday and did the same thing. That's in the 60's & 70's when men were MEN. He & my uncle went fishing during the week. lol He was the funniest guy. He was always joking around and giving people a hard time. I've seen him call a very homely woman (that was married to my cousin) ugly and made her laugh about it. By the way, she was NOT a nice person but as usual took an instant liking to Dad. As did just about everyone did. I lost my Mom 2 years ago and it was very hard. We lived together because I was disabled in my back and neck and she also had troubles living on her fixed income so we went together and lived a little better. She was an AMAZING woman, wife and mom. She was a very hard worker. I could write a book about what she's done for us to just survive. Anyway, I feel for you and I'll be praying for you and your family and really hope you are doing good. Now I live with my son and his aunt. I've been really struggling here but I'm starting to feel better everyday. I'm very sorry for your loss and will definately will be praying for your son. Much respect for retiring so you can care for him.
Absolutely great video! Our 406 has heavily worked Trac 1 heads and it makes a difference. I would say with a really good set of heads, a swap to E85 and see if you need a little different carb would make a good difference. What about the gear? What was the rpm when you crossed the finish line? I would bet at least a 4.56 would help. We're running 5.38 and crossing the finish line at 6700. I wonder about your rear tires as well. Derek such a great car and it's my all time favorite color. I did things like this in a 1973 Z28. It was great fun. It is great to see you and your family doing all these things together. My first car was a 70 Chevelle with the 307. My brother took a week off from work and rebuilt that engine. Put a set of old 80s IROC rims on out with some Mickey Thompson Street slicks. She ran pretty good. Still wish I had her

My favorite car in your fleet by far. Brings a feller back to 1984 when I had my 70 Nova 396. My best ever was 11.11 in the quarter. Had a lot of help from the old drag dude neighbor, Thanks Tim. I think she needs a BB and keep her old school like the first owner.

Blue 70 Malibu, 383 Stroker, 4:11 posi, line lock, ratchet shifter, Vic jr manifold etc.
Watching this has inspired me to find another Blue 70 Chevelle. This is almost identical to my old car. Mine also ran in the high 12’s.

What a great find. The car has such a unique history and been preserved so well I’d love to see it stay more or less in its current form. Pull the 406, tear it down and closely inspect, and rebuild it with some modern techniques and equipment, especially heads/valve train to raise the RPM and power thresholds safely & reliably. Put a serious cooling system and a Gear Vendors overdrive unit in it and make it a true Sick Week machine. I know it would be fun to swap a big block or spicy LS into it, but I’d love to see it optimized in its current state and keep its history intact for future generations to enjoy. Long time subscriber, love the channel and can’t wait to see you work on that GN!
Love the backstory just makes the video. Seeing it do what the man said it would do this many years later is just amazing. Seeing you spend time with the family doin a little shopping having some ice cream …just as if not even more amazing!
The reverse valve body shifter sounded pretty cool. If you do an engine swap keeping it old school with a 454 would be pretty cool too.
that chevelle could have had anywhere from a 250 straight six to a 307, 2 different 350 options, or a 400. a 454 was available in SS trim only.

The car is a gem. The only thing I would do if I had it would be to rebuild or replace that shifter and maybe put the original gauge cluster back in it.

I came across your channel a couple of months ago and have been binge watching ever since. I have to echo the other comments in appreciation of your channel. I love your emphasis on family and your wholesome content. I learned all I know about cars from helping my dad when I was a kid. I wish we would have had a garage to work in ( think changing a tranny in the winter on a dirt driveway in Erie PA) But you remind me of my dad back then. Since he passed 2 yrs ago, I have been trying to spend more time with my son (12) He was a preemie who came at 28 weeks and spent 4 months in the NICU. I would like to find a late 70's-80's car for cheap that we could fix up for him for when he turns 16. Rust is no biggie cause I am a fabricator/welder. I was Inspired to do this by you so thanks and keep the awesome content coming.

What does your E.T. translate to horsepower b/c if I remember right when it was on the chassis dyno hp’s were 230. I think that was way low.

Great video - I really like the idea of keeping it a late 80's monster street / strip car. Would love to see it rev out with a big old school solid flat tappet cam with 250+ @.050 duration and the 4.88 gears. Like an Isky Z-30 or even an old GM Z28 off-road race cam
YEA,HE SHOULD KEEP IT OLD SCHOOL FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE
The current engine doesn't have enough compression for a cam like that.
@@davelowets I mean if it's got 11:1 you can go pretty big on the duration. As far as I know I don't think the compression has been checked yet the heads haven't come off.

I owned a 1958 GMC pickup in 1986 with a "small" block 327. It also had double heads w/ 2.02/1.65 valves, a 305/525 cam, paired w/ a saginaw 4 speed quick shifter. It ran 6.80 in the 1/8 mile producing over 500HP. Stop making excuses for the small block.
Love the sound of that motor! I hope you do some incremental mods with plenty of testing. Better shifter, electric fans, hotter spark, etc. I agree with the guy that suggested fender covers to protect the paint. With VGG logos they would be a good addition to the store.
I'd spend my money on a proper trans and rear for this car.
Even if you're only pushing 500hp, a trans brake and a locker are good investments to get your ET to be more consistent for bracket racing.
That and proper valve springs. Stop the valves from floating.
Great time capsule. Loved watching it go down the track. Don't know what your plans are but it would be great to see what swapping to a modern set of performance cylinder heads does to its quarter mile times. Just change the heads only and run it.

I love the fact that you have taken the time to keep the history of the car ongoing for the previous owner. It's obvious he took great care of it. Love that 1956 Buick sitting on top also. I had a 56' Century that looked almost identical. Great video and time spent with family.

Keep it as is. No LS. Freshen the 400 up, maybe a different cam or newer heads. No stickers,no wrap. Keep it as a driver for your engagements. A 12 second roadable car with old school muscle under the hood are getting rarer everyday.

Just so you know 3" with a small block is overkilled I don't know where people got that idea that bigger exhaust is always better it's not you can either go way too restricted or you can go way to open even the freakin you gotta think in the in the office so how exhaust works dual 2 and a 1/2 is a single 3" pipe so basically you're just put 42 and a 1/2 inch pipes on that car which will make you lose horsepower My brother used to be an exhaust man and the guy that taught him was an exhaust man for 30 years he refused to put dual 3" on to car because of that particular thing that he he knew as being a drag Racer but you don't do that and why the h*** does everybody have to use f****** overflow Lester they sound like s***

Every since I seen your show on the discovery channel I watched all of the episodes and then I turned to TH-cam to see if I could find more videos or episodes there and I had no idea that you had all the videos on TH-cam.
