The lead singer is Adam Duritz and he's said the song was inspired by a night where he and a friend were at a bar and they wanted to talk to some girls, but were too shy and insecure to approach them.

Yes, given how he responds to songs, I think that Hard to Handle and Twice as Hard would be great songs for him to try. She Talks to Angels is a lovely song, but he does not have the same reaction to those songs. He should still do the slower ones, but mix them into a day he has more upbeat ones.

This song is based off of a true story. Adam Duritz, the frontman for the band was at a bar with Marty Jones of the Himalayans (Adam was originally in that band) and saw a musician chatting up several women. The two of them didn't have the courage to talk to any of the women so they just sat there imagining it would be easier if they were famous. When they got home they wrote this song. The bar was the New Amsterdam in San Francisco and they went there after hearing Marty Jones' father who is flamenco guitarist David Serva play somewhere else.
He said "we stare at the beautiful women" not share lol 🙂 💃
It's about him and Marty Jones (from the band the Himalayans). I guess at the bar picking up chicks and discussing how they are going to be big stars one day....

I have a love-hate relationship with that song. When i was 18 I lost control of and flipped my truck off the side of a highway doing about 80 mph while that cd/song was playing. To this day if that comes on the radio i crank the volume.....and slow down....to 70 mph

That whole counting crows album is brilliant too
He is a super chill guy. They were booked at a local beach bar when this came out and the lead singer was walking around among the crowd and hanging out before the performance. And they sounded very clean. Good show.
Mrs. Potter’s Lullaby, Long December, Round Here, Hangin Around, American Girls, Big Yellow Taxi are all great songs by Counting Crows.
The sad sad Crows was the CD I borrowed from a girl 20 years ago. She still reminds me i have not returned this one.

Thanks for this one! Such a truly talented band! My uncle went to high school and was friends with the keyboardist! His name is Charlie Gillingham, and he’s a truly lovely person! My uncle took me to one of their shows in Denver, and Charlie let us come back stage and meet the band. He Hadn’t seen my uncle in years, but genuinely seemed thrilled to have an old high school friend and fellow Californian there to support them. He even told me stories about he and my uncle playing some hoops back in the day 😂! Needless to say I’m a huge fan, and had the pleasure of getting to see them live several times back in the 90’s and early 00’s! Love your reactions you always make my day! Much ❤️ for you!

The "Flamingo Girl" is actually "Flamenco"...it's a type of Spanish music and dancing. But besides that--this song is a great jam, man. The 90s had some very eclectic music, and there were some really good gems sprinkled throughout. The Counting Crows is one of them.
Also, stop being lonely. When you're a little crazy and "different" (like I often am), it's hard to find a group that you can call 'your people,' but they are out there, and they're usually found by accident. Here's to hoping that you have a happy accident!

A freind of mine was a big fan of Counting Crows and hung out with them for a few months before they were famous. Hearing Counting Crows records playing in the backgound I never paid much attention but I noticed that 'Mr Jones' appears in a few songs, hanging out with the singer, promising to make him a star, pushing him,leaving in an acrymonious split and being missed, so I always presumed 'Mr Jones' was their manager.

If I recall, Mr Jones is the lead singers neighbor who introduced him to music. I think that’s where the song originated from. I could be mistaken.
