The All in the Family Cast Salutes the Family Viewing Hour, 1975!!!!

  • Backstory: The Family Viewing Hour, which was in effect from 1975 thru 1977, was mandated by the FCC to have the networks show ONLY family-friendly programming from 8 to 9 PM ET, since there was too much sex and violence on the tube during those hours.. (This ruling was rescinded two years later, in 1977.) This ruling forced Norman Lear, creator of "All in the Family," to move the show from its 8 PM Sat. time slot to 9 PM on Monday nights. The cast of "All in the Family" did a little in-house "tribute" to the Family Viewing our, with their new "1975 version" of the show's opening theme song...and here it is! This clip never aired, it was only performed live before a studio audience.

    I do wish the average viewer out there understood that Carroll O’Connor was a liberal, educated, and eclectic. Too often they eagerly tuned in because they missed the point of the show. To this day, right wingers on TH-cam falsely portray All in the Family as having been an experiment in spreading hate, instead of what it really was for: widening the TV medium to look at relevant issues. People who are clearly racists will steer their recruits toward AITF scenes, then laud the Archie character for making slurs. A dangerous identity theft of a great progressive show.

    • @JohannaLeigh
      @JohannaLeigh 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      All in the Family was almost Blazing Saddles as far as the twist both movie and series played to the idiocy; illustrating absurdity by being absurd.
      I recall an interview Carroll O'Connor had with Dick Clark, of all people. Apparently, he used to be a teacher.
      If you type Carroll's name and then Dean Martin, Carroll played against his iconic character on the Dean Martin variety show and it was so funny!
      Sammy Davis Jr. got the joke
      Sherman Hemsley (George Jefferson) got it. I think the black community was a good distance ahead of those who rooted for Archie. The morons who rooted for Archie in the early seasons must've been royally cheesed off when Archie started turning a corner.

      @@JohannaLeigh Carroll O'Connor did a little remembered TV ad for the struggling George McGovern campaign in 1972. But the audacious thing about it was -- he seemed to be doing the ad as Archie, not himself. He was seated in a chair, if not _the chair_ and he wore a plain white work shirt. McGovern noted the ad at a rally, and on second reference, called his endorser "Archie Bunker," in a last desperate effort to stave off his rejection by white working class voters. ... I'll check that Dean Martin skit. Sounds fascinating.

    The family hour wasn't popular with the actors and writers. There were only so many slots in the 9:00 and 10:00 hours. That meant a lot of sitcoms went on at 8:00 and had to tone it down. Rhoda was married but she and Joe couldn't talk about the bedroom.

    All In The Family stands as the best sitcom in history. But I found myself kind of sad as I watched this. When the show was breaking down barriers it was exciting because it felt a little dangerous. Now I see that sense of danger was not without good reason. Now in 2023 I've witnessed the inevitable consequences of liberalism; the unavoidable end game of reckless moral abandon. I've called myself a liberal my entire adult life; but I can no longer use that label to describe myself. The political left have gone completely nuts. The stuff currently happening in the White House makes Watergate look like child's play. If John F. Kennedy were alive today he would be considered an extreme conservative. Those were the basic moral and political values I've lived by; and I still do today. I haven't changed much over the years; but the left have become so radical I can no longer stand on that side. By the time you reach 60 you can't help but see the inevitable consequence of liberalism (unless you live in a bubble like Rob Reiner). They are the same consequences that destroyed great civilizations in the past. If we don't turn around soon the same is coming for us. Turns out he really was a meathead.

      If O'Connor was not liberal he would not have taken this role. Can you imagine John Wayne playing a soldier in the Sacred Band of Thebes? There were actors who refused roles that contained bad words or risky material. Among them, Ginger Rogers, Olivia de Havilland etc.
