One aspect that wasn't touched upon is how devastating this could potentially be to business and education ecosystems. Schools all over the US have become increasingly tech dependent to the point their entire curriculums revolve around their students having chromebooks issued to them, managed by the Google admin console. Almost everything they do is through chrome or some associated google service, and there's really no telling if there would be a smooth transition to a new owner for continued operation, or if they entire system would fall apart. If the latter, it could potentially cost those districts hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, of dollars in transitioning to new software, hardware, and training to resume their programs.

Let's be honest. A monopoly's mere existence is anti-competitive. It doesn't have to actively sabotage its competitors. Once it gets a stranglehold on a specific market, sometimes a competitor just cannot break in. That means the monopoly is free to mistreat its customers because there's nowhere else to go.

So while they may be separate companies on paper (and legally), they wouldn't be separate companies at all in practice. These separate companies (TH-cam, Chrome) would then "invest" their profits into Alphabet stock, so the parent company (Alphabet) wouldn't actually see any corporate revenue loss.

The only problem I see here is that they're going specifically after the Google Chrome BROWSER and not the Google SEARCH ENGINE. Those are NOT the same thing, and yet they're alluding to selling the browser = selling the search engine. Going after the browser itself would cause major issues for all Chromium based browsers, as no doubt any sale would force Google out of developing and maintaining the open source Chromium project. They'd inevitably either cause Chromium entirely to fall alongside the sale of Chrome, by splitting into many different branches owned by all the different companies that contribute, or cause another tech giant like Microsoft or Meta to pick up Chrome and the Chromium project development and thus simply transfer the monopoly over to another data hungry mega corp. Also, wouldn't this outright kill Firefox? Google's payments are the main revenue generators for Firefox, and this would ban them from even associating with Mozilla, thus ending the around half a billion in revenue they get annually from Google payments alone. So not only would all Chromium browsers be at risk, but Firefox would likely cease to exist as well. Sure, Google is a monopoly, but this isn't something like AT&T where they can just split the company. They let it go on far too long for that to be a viable option, which is likely why they went with the proposition to sell Chrome and Android off. The fact that simply taking it away from Google would kill Firefox, a competitor that doesn't even use the same technology, and put all the other Chromium competitors at risk shows that this has come way too late.

Guarantee the main reason bing even shows up on these lists is because of corporations having it be the default search engine for Edge on most company machines. FACTS. I have been using Brave for a year now and its literally the perfect browser. I got a month free trial of Hulu (low tier with ads) and everything I watched on it I did it on my windows 11 laptop in Brave on the Hulu website. I binged every single Episode of Futurama with 0 ads. Disney+ also has no ads on Brave.

I don't think they should be required to sell Chrome. Maybe force them to not set a default search engine on the browser for new users and new users are forced to pick their own from a set of options upon first use? I think that would solve their biggest issue.

If you take away google from the ecosystem what will happen is someone else will step in. That void will be worth too much money for companies to not try. What is this going to change? People are just going to use Google anyway because they're used to it. Even if they're being sued for being a monopoly which they are, but familiarity often makes the alternatives look like diet coke. See the problem I'm finding with laws in the US is that big tech companies are pretty much above them. We can talk about the Sherman Act and other similar acts, but at the end of the day none of it really matters. Google will pay a fine that's equal to pennies for them and will continue on. Nothing is going to happen to them, and business will continue like usual. It's the sad reality of the situation.

Not true. I have Startpage on both my laptop and mobile. Sure, I had to DL Startpage app from Google Play Store, but it's an alternative to the big 4 or 5 bundled on your typical mobile device. It's now my default. There are other browsers that are privacy centred that, if you even give a cursory look, you'll find them and easily install on your mobile.
gotta wonder if they can do the same with the Sony monopoly as well, they've got a ton of stuff under their control; audio equipment, digital media players and recorders, cinema productions, video games (all-system and proprietary exclusives).

it's really not. firefox has about 9 months worth of income left according to court documents related to this case. Mozilla, as a whole, isn't even considering firefox as part of their future plan they are aiming to be an advertisement company powered by AI. Firefox as we know it will very much, cease to exist as mozilla may not even last past 2025. Looking at the open source and linux community, i doubt anyone will want to take the endeavour of maintaining the firefox browser. We are talking about a community that still doesn't have its own fully functionnal web browser yet. I'm talking about gnome-web. that browser has been in development for a longtime and it still isn't usable on the modern web. Most projects piggyback off firefox

However in March the DOJ sued Apple for having a monopoly in the smart phone market and limiting services to other non apple devices (such as picture and video quality being degraded on purpose when messaging none apple phones) They're also accused of making it hard for Apple customers to use anything outside of Apple's market, such as apple pay, thus making it a monopoly within their own company. They also put special chipsets in headphones, even ones sponsored by Apple (Beats) that only work with Apple phones. Google pay and such doesn't charge its customers to use their products, but apple absolutely refuses to use 3rd party apps unless forced to.
I don’t see Apple as a monopoly; every field Apple is active in has meaningful competition. If you ask me, the biggest example of a tech monopoly to date is this very website. Think about it: where else are you going to find another platform that offers the same services with the same reliability that TH-cam does? Some might offer up sites like Dailymotion or Vimeo, but let’s face facts: those platforms would implode if they saw even a quarter of TH-cam’s daily traffic. For any other web company to amass the level of infrastructure necessary to operate a video platform as big as TH-cam is borderline impossible without bankrupting themselves in the process. No one can even come close to contesting TH-cam’s dominance, to the point where attempting to do so is straight-up fiscal suicide. That’s what needs to be separated from Google, not Chrome.

My workplace is extremely google dependant, not because they use a software exclusively developed for it... it because the people CAN'T use something else, they even refuse to use another browser even though we "the IT guys" tell them to stop using Chrome because it's causing a very awful issue with locking passwords all the time. Freaking Chrome saves old passwords under a same account and keeps calling them all the time.
Fun fact about Firefox; When Netscape Navigator went under, Mozilla took the coding used to make that browser as a base to make Firefox. Firefox is basically an improved version of Netscape Navigator.

One aspect that wasn't touched upon is how devastating this could potentially be to business and education ecosystems. Schools all over the US have become increasingly tech dependent to the point their entire curriculums revolve around their students having chromebooks issued to them, managed by the Google admin console. Almost everything they do is through chrome or some associated google service, and there's really no telling if there would be a smooth transition to a new owner for continued operation, or if they entire system would fall apart. If the latter, it could potentially cost those districts hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, of dollars in transitioning to new software, hardware, and training to resume their programs.

Let's be honest. A monopoly's mere existence is anti-competitive. It doesn't have to actively sabotage its competitors. Once it gets a stranglehold on a specific market, sometimes a competitor just cannot break in. That means the monopoly is free to mistreat its customers because there's nowhere else to go.

Right.. you know what will happen? Google would split Google Search, TH-cam and Chrome into separate companies, all ran by board members that sit on the board at all three companies. So while they may be separate companies on paper (and legally), they wouldn't be separate companies at all in practice. These separate companies (TH-cam, Chrome) would then "invest" their profits into Alphabet stock, so the parent company (Alphabet) wouldn't actually see any corporate revenue loss.

The only problem I see here is that they're going specifically after the Google Chrome BROWSER and not the Google SEARCH ENGINE. Those are NOT the same thing, and yet they're alluding to selling the browser = selling the search engine. Going after the browser itself would cause major issues for all Chromium based browsers, as no doubt any sale would force Google out of developing and maintaining the open source Chromium project. They'd inevitably either cause Chromium entirely to fall alongside the sale of Chrome, by splitting into many different branches owned by all the different companies that contribute, or cause another tech giant like Microsoft or Meta to pick up Chrome and the Chromium project development and thus simply transfer the monopoly over to another data hungry mega corp.
Also, wouldn't this outright kill Firefox? Google's payments are the main revenue generators for Firefox, and this would ban them from even associating with Mozilla, thus ending the around half a billion in revenue they get annually from Google payments alone. So not only would all Chromium browsers be at risk, but Firefox would likely cease to exist as well.
Sure, Google is a monopoly, but this isn't something like AT&T where they can just split the company. They let it go on far too long for that to be a viable option, which is likely why they went with the proposition to sell Chrome and Android off. The fact that simply taking it away from Google would kill Firefox, a competitor that doesn't even use the same technology, and put all the other Chromium competitors at risk shows that this has come way too late.
I see it wrecking havoc on chromium based browsers atleast in the beginning and completely destroying Firefox. What do you expect US Government is made up of elderly people who are tech illiterate. FACTS. I have been using Brave for a year now and its literally the perfect browser.
I got a month free trial of Hulu (low tier with ads) and everything I watched on it I did it on my windows 11 laptop in Brave on the Hulu website. I binged every single Episode of Futurama with 0 ads. Disney+ also has no ads on Brave.

What is this going to change? People are just going to use Google anyway because they're used to it. Even if they're being sued for being a monopoly which they are, but familiarity often makes the alternatives look like diet coke. Even if trying something different can be revolutionary and impactful, which can be intimidating, even fear invoking to some. That is just how society works. it is based on a familiarity system, which is reinforced by fear and power. But who am I to judge? I am just a cog in a complex, inter-connected system.
I'm interested to see how this might affect advertising and Googles manifestos on banning adblockers, and how the economy around ads gets shaken up too!
See the problem I'm finding with laws in the US is that big tech companies are pretty much above them. We can talk about the Sherman Act and other similar acts, but at the end of the day none of it really matters. Google will pay a fine that's equal to pennies for them and will continue on. Nothing is going to happen to them, and business will continue like usual. It's the sad reality of the situation.

A paying customer of Kagi here. I'm more than happy with Kagi, but even then, some browsers, mainly mobile ones, have no option of switching to custom search engines at all.
Not true. I have Startpage on both my laptop and mobile. Sure, I had to DL Startpage app from Google Play Store, but it's an alternative to the big 4 or 5 bundled on your typical mobile device. It's now my default. There are other browsers that are privacy centred that, if you even give a cursory look, you'll find them and easily install on your mobile.

it's really not. firefox has about 9 months worth of income left according to court documents related to this case. Mozilla, as a whole, isn't even considering firefox as part of their future plan they are aiming to be an advertisement company powered by AI. Firefox as we know it will very much, cease to exist as mozilla may not even last past 2025. Looking at the open source and linux community, i doubt anyone will want to take the endeavour of maintaining the firefox browser. We are talking about a community that still doesn't have its own fully functionnal web browser yet. I'm talking about gnome-web. that browser has been in development for a longtime and it still isn't usable on the modern web. Most projects piggyback off firefox

However in March the DOJ sued Apple for having a monopoly in the smart phone market and limiting services to other non apple devices (such as picture and video quality being degraded on purpose when messaging none apple phones) They're also accused of making it hard for Apple customers to use anything outside of Apple's market, such as apple pay, thus making it a monopoly within their own company. They also put special chipsets in headphones, even ones sponsored by Apple (Beats) that only work with Apple phones. Google pay and such doesn't charge its customers to use their products, but apple absolutely refuses to use 3rd party apps unless forced to.
Apple did get in trouble with their app store monopoly with the EU iirc.
I don’t see Apple as a monopoly; every field Apple is active in has meaningful competition. If you ask me, the biggest example of a tech monopoly to date is this very website. Think about it: where else are you going to find another platform that offers the same services with the same reliability that TH-cam does? Some might offer up sites like Dailymotion or Vimeo, but let’s face facts: those platforms would implode if they saw even a quarter of TH-cam’s daily traffic. For any other web company to amass the level of infrastructure necessary to operate a video platform as big as TH-cam is borderline impossible without bankrupting themselves in the process. No one can even come close to contesting TH-cam’s dominance, to the point where attempting to do so is straight-up fiscal suicide. That’s what needs to be separated from Google, not Chrome.

My workplace is extremely google dependant, not because they use a software exclusively developed for it... it because the people CAN'T use something else, they even refuse to use another browser even though we "the IT guys" tell them to stop using Chrome because it's causing a very awful issue with locking passwords all the time.
Freaking Chrome saves old passwords under a same account and keeps calling them all the time.
Convenience, is the bane of freedom, just ask Sigmund Freud. Also, safe as a darkside.
Fun fact about Firefox;
When Netscape Navigator went under, Mozilla took the coding used to make that browser as a base to make Firefox.
Firefox is basically an improved version of Netscape Navigator.

People forget - Microsoft decided to implement other browser features DIFFERENTLY, to deliberately break websites on other browsers. MS JScript was made to compete with JavaScript, ActiveX to compete with Flash etc. etc. Trouble was, they were not cross compatible. So MS were first to try to monopolise it
Most websites ended up with "This site is best viewed in {browser name}" notice on their front page - jQuery was invented to bridge the scripting gaps and cross browser compatibility started..
And these boomer politicians are exactly why things aren't getting anything done, alot of them are computer illustrate.

Microsoft has had a monopoly on Windows forever why haven't they done something about that. That's what confuses me.
United States v. Microsoft Corp. was one attempt 20+ years ago. The US government accused Microsoft of monopolizing the web browser market through their mandatory install of Internet Explorer. MS ended up settling and changing how PC makers can sell their software.
