Actually, life as a gladiator was pretty good. They were well fed & trained and hired out for arms exhibitions and that was costly so they were pampered and never killed...unless you had deep pockets and could pay for the privilege. So it rarely happened.
You are right although only in some circumstances. There were definitely some gladiators that were just there to be killed. Slaves and criminals were killed in their hundreds of thousands in the arena. Trained gladiators also definitely died in the arena, although as you say this was rarer. The film actually does a good job portraying this when Proximo is given the battle of Carthage.
@michaeldowson6988 well true but arguably if you fight in a gladiatorial arena you are a gladiator. Gladiators came in different shapes and sizes with varying degrees of ability. My point is being a gladiator was still a horrendous job. But you are defo right that some higher level gladiators were better off than some might think
@michaeldowson6988 OK, now, you're just being an annoying contrarian. He's giving you credit for being right. And he is also making good points. Both of you guys are right.. You don't have to pick apart his argument just because you feel challenged. It's uncivilized sir.

Oliver Reed should have been the second Oscar! Brilliant!
Ultimately were all deadmen, sadly we cannot choose how but we can decide how to meet that end so that we can be remembered as men! Proximo
"Is that the sign of your guards?" USMC
Maximus is actually a Carthaginian in this time line
So 6:15 if it was 2000 then proximo was willing to bet against his own men.
True business man.

@@hamiltoncork5778 Slaves & criminals weren't trained gladiators though.

@@hamiltoncork5778 Arenas were multi-purpose, not built specifically for gladiatorial events.

2 + 4 = 5?
Yes, but I'm thinking it was a way to tell the merchant that he wants a bigger discount. The negotiation is under Proximo's terms.
That is the gladiator math.
Roma Roma..nikad doma
He added " for an old friend" so he meant it worth 6000 but for Proximo 5000 ( discount )
They didn’t have AI to tell them.
