He made a really good tandem with the team's power forward, but that power forward decided to focus on his football skills after he graduated, ending up in the NFL draft. That power forward....was Randy Moss. Shaq said in an interview with KG: "You know who was really fun to play with? White Chocolate, in Miami. White Chocolate was nice to play with cause I could just put my hand up like that, and the ball would be right there, every time. Every time. Every. Time."
I'm from West Virginia, and about 2 hrs. south of where Williams and Moss grew up. I was at the state tournament in Charleston and watched both of them ball! They played for Dupont HS and I saw them beat Beckley-Woodrow Wilson in the quarters. White Chocolate was displaying his handles and assists, but it was Moss that put on a show. At the time, I thought Randy was going to be their biggest basketball star, until he went to ND and then transferred to Marshall and became a gridiron legend at WR. Dupont went on to win the title that year in hoops and I was so glad I was there, because I knew that they were going to be future stars in the League; you could see the skillset. Believe it or not, I also was playing playground ball back in the day in the Hampton Roads area, not far from Virginia Beach; where I was living at the time and played against a flashy point guard with a crossover from hell that would break your ankles! He was still young at the time, but I was lucky to have played against Allen Iverson. Sorry to bother you, but I saw your comment and thought you might like this story.
A guy named Bobby Howard went there too with them. He went to Notre Dame and while he only played a coupe of seasons in the NFL it is wild to imagine that kind of talent concentrated in that small community in the 90s.

Most high school teams here make do with a 6'5" C, but they were from one of the largest schools in the state so they probably had one guy taller than Randy. Hell, I'm 6'1" and I played inside A LOT just because I had longer reach and oddly good rim protection abilities for my size. B-ball here is different when you only have 200 or 300 kids to a school, and play single A ball. Dupont was triple A.
Before the 80’s, there was a guy named “Pistol” Pete Maravich. He was showtime before Magic. That dude was amazing. He was so good he couldn’t help but show off. The three point line showed up in 1977; Pistol Pete retired in 1980. If the three point line had existed during his whole career, he would have broken so many scoring records it’d be ridiculous. Check him out. He’s one of the greats.
Crazy thing about Pistol, is that he only played *10 seasons* due to injuries, and is still one of the top 75 of all time, and a HOF. Let that sink in. Probably the greatest college player ever. Those records will never be broken, unless top talent start to reconsider the NCAA again.

Having watched the entirety of Jason Williams's career... I can tell you that his teammates were never ready for his passes. This guy had a way of keeping a defense honest. You could never tell if he was going all the way to the basket for his own bucket... or if there is going to be some miraculous drop off to any of his teammates just lingering around the basket. It ended up being quite 50/50!!!

I remember watching Jayson Williams. He actually liked being a passer more than being a scorer. There is an interview with him talking about how he practiced these passing plays when he was growing up. He was an underrated player back then. He was one of my favorites to watch.
I live in Orlando. Had no idea he lives here. I used to live in the same building as some of the short contract Magic players, they'd rent the penthouses on the top floor but the hoops were on the 7th, right below my balcony. They used to go down there play pickup games and cookout. It was unreal how good even mid level NBA players are seeing them play like that. Was like watching some super heroes play basketball. They hit every shot when ungaurded. I mean EVERY shot. Saw one hit like 15 3s in a row like nothing, talking to somebody the whole time he was doing it. Names I remember were JJ Reddick, Ryan Anderson, Big Baby Davis, another dude who wasn't even in the NBA but played for a top D1 school. He could even hit threes like you've never seen and was 6'6"/6'7". Have some pictures saved in the cloud somewhere. It was an experience I'll never forget. They were that good.

A 6'1" white dude got drafted in Rd 1 then started immediately for a reason. BTW, he was also Randy Moss QB in HS and won "player of the year" one time, playing on the same football team as Randy. True story. That's an athletic white boy right there.

Played 2-2 full court often because they both were sitting out their first year at Marshall(Jason left to Florida once Donovan got the coaching job there) and I played most of those games with them. Keith is famous for having the NCAA record for 3 a game at Marshall. Look it all up.

There was a couple of years there where Peja was off the hook. I saw him in a game against the Clippers where he was like 19/20, had something like 45 and sat the whole 4th quarter. Unreal.

I remember watching the games with my dad and he would say "this guy's a psycopath" because he did whatever he wanted, sometimes it was great assists, and sometimes he would take a shot from the middle of the court when the smart thing was to run out the clock. He just didn't give a f*ck.

I remember when he was basically the entire ESPN Top 10 plays of the week. If the Kings were ever going to win it all, it was the 2000-2001 seasons when they had Williams, Webber, Divac, and Peja. That was a fun team to watch. If I remember correctly, they should have beaten the Lakers in I think 2001 but the refs made multiple terrible calls in a series ending game that Sacramento was winning. I also remember the Kings traded Williams for Bobby around that time too which I never really agreed with. Bobby was a very good player but I think Williams was a better PG where Bobby was a little better of a scorer.
You guys could also watch the documentary they did on that kings lakers series... HBO also did a good documentary Courtship of Rivals about Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.

White Chocolate! He had a really good stretch in the NBA, where he was talked about as being among the best players at the time. Obviously it didn’t last long enough to get him into the HOF - or for him to be a fringe HOFer - but he was still great in that stretch. (KG gave him a big shout out during an interview, I think was w Brian Scalabrini, about the best young players, comparing them to past players, & it’s no small feat to make a lasting impression of how skilled a player you were, on an all-time great like Garnett!)

When I was a kid, I was up in Gainesville watching J-Dub workout right after he transferred there, and he showed me a drill using metal gardening gloves to work on your handles and passes. I went from and okay handle to a ridiculous handle in one summer.

Moss went to the ABDC Camp when he was high school & there were dudes his size playing SG. He made the right choice to go with football. Sidenote...my homie dropped 41 on Moss & Williams when he was in 10th grade in their gym.
Jason was "The Professor" Bucher if he was taller, faster, had longer arms, a better passer, and got out of HS 10 years earlier. Guy was a monster ball handler, the best passer in the game, and so much fun to watch. He had some problems with the teams he wound up on after Sacramento not knowing how to best use him (plus injuries), but he still had a hell of a career. Shaq speaks GLOWINGLY of playing with him and Jason being one of his favorite players to work with.

I watched Jason and Randy grow up. Multiple sport players...And, they were practicing that kinda crazy stuff since they were playing Biddie-Ball.
I'm from Miami and even though he was only with the Miami Heat for a couple of years, I'm so glad he won his championship with us.. alongside Gary Payton and Alonzo Mourning, both who had never won either.
I remember watching Jayson Williams. He actually liked being a passer more than being a scorer. There is an interview with him talking about how he practiced these passing plays when he was growing up. He was an underrated player back then. He was one of my favorites to watch.

I live in Orlando. Had no idea he lives here. I used to live in the same building as some of the short contract Magic players, they'd rent the penthouses on the top floor but the hoops were on the 7th, right below my balcony. They used to go down there play pickup games and cookout. It was unreal how good even mid level NBA players are seeing them play like that. Was like watching some super heroes play basketball.
They hit every shot when ungaurded. I mean EVERY shot. Saw one hit like 15 3s in a row like nothing, talking to somebody the whole time he was doing it.
Names I remember were JJ Reddick, Ryan Anderson, Big Baby Davis, another dude who wasn't even in the NBA but played for a top D1 school. He could even hit threes like you've never seen and was 6'6"/6'7".
Have some pictures saved in the cloud somewhere. It was an experience I'll never forget. They were that good.

I always thought he had eyes in the back of his head. I'd say his play is 70% talent-30% practice. He has a son playing high school basketball; he has some BIG shoes to fill, but also a great teacher.

Played 2-2 full court often because they both were sitting out their first year at Marshall(Jason left to Florida once Donovan got the coaching job there) and I played most of those games with them. When I was a kid I never missed a kings game. They were by far the funnest team to watch and jason williams was a big part of it. I remember watching the games with my dad and he would say "this guy's a psycopath" because he did whatever he wanted, sometimes it was great assists, and sometimes he would take a shot from the middle of the court when the smart thing was to run out the clock. He just didn't give a f*ck.
That era of the Kings had some all time lineups. Hugely innovative and influential.

Even in high school smoking out then playing with Randy Moss, even won a state title together. Best friends since they were babies who ended smoking buddies & teammates. J-Dub was qb in football and played point in basketball.
I remember when he was basically the entire ESPN Top 10 plays of the week. If the Kings were ever going to win it all, it was the 2000-2001 seasons when they had Williams, Webber, Divac, and Peja. That was a fun team to watch. If I remember correctly, they should have beaten the Lakers in I think 2001 but the refs made multiple terrible calls in a series ending game that Sacramento was winning.
I also remember the Kings traded Williams for Bobby around that time too which I never really agreed with. Bobby was a very good player but I think Williams was a better PG where Bobby was a little better of a scorer.
You guys could also watch the documentary they did on that kings lakers series... HBO also did a good documentary Courtship of Rivals about Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.
We had season tickets during this run for the Kings. That was a freakn FUN team to watch play. These highlights don’t even do Jason or this team justice.

White Chocolate! He had a really good stretch in the NBA, where he was talked about as being among the best players at the time. Obviously it didn’t last long enough to get him into the HOF - or for him to be a fringe HOFer - but he was still great in that stretch. (KG gave him a big shout out during an interview, I think was w Brian Scalabrini, about the best young players, comparing them to past players, & it’s no small feat to make a lasting impression of how skilled a player you were, on an all-time great like Garnett!)

When I was a kid, I was up in Gainesville watching J-Dub workout right after he transferred there, and he showed me a drill using metal gardening gloves to work on your handles and passes. I went from and okay handle to a ridiculous handle in one summer.

Moss went to the ABDC Camp when he was high school & there were dudes his size playing SG. He made the right choice to go with football. Sidenote...my homie dropped 41 on Moss & Williams when he was in 10th grade in their gym.
Jason was "The Professor" Bucher if he was taller, faster, had longer arms, a better passer, and got out of HS 10 years earlier. Guy was a monster ball handler, the best passer in the game, and so much fun to watch. He had some problems with the teams he wound up on after Sacramento not knowing how to best use him (plus injuries), but he still had a hell of a career. Shaq speaks GLOWINGLY of playing with him and Jason being one of his favorite players to work with.
Jason and Bird both played Street ball and both got their influences along with everyone else from pistol pete. highest scoring college player all time to this day. should check out the pistol.
