Seriously. Seeing him messing with the piano mask-less after uncovering the poop made me recoil. The second I saw that mouse poop I would’ve been wearing a full hazmat suit lmao.
@@christianweatherbroadcasting how is this related to a discussion on being safe when cleaning nests? Next time do it in a short that tackles your idea bro.
As a domestic cleaner I had to clean a piano that had sticky homemade blackberry wine all over it. The bottles had all popped their corks, all over the ceiling and books too. Next day I was called back to do it all over again as the rest of the bottles had exploded during the night 😫

You impress me with your skill, dedication and commitment to your customers. These can be hard traits to find in a lot of people these days. Your videos are also really fun and interesting to watch. I almost forgot to mention that the peppermint oil has to be pure, natural peppermint oil. There are some cheap, synthetic extracts that smell like the real thing to humans but, mice and other rodents can tell the difference.
Auto mechanic here, we also have alot of issues with mice eating wiring and creating nests in the air intake boxes. peppermint oil is a good one! Some other options we see success with are drier sheets, any strong smelling soap bars (I find irish spring to be a good one), and moth balls. Mice hate the smell of anything that's really heavily scented 🍻 good luck guys!
I like to imagine the reason mice like to hang out in pianos is because it’s like a giant opera house to them. Just imagine walking around the inside of a piano as a mouse, the sounds and ambiance would be absolutely breathtaking. Maybe mice enjoy music just as much as we do, but they don’t know how to enjoy it in a respectful way.
My dad was a piano technician, as am I (mostly retired now). He found everything from mouse nests and mummified mice to apparently-used condoms inside of pianos (I can only imagine how & why they got there!). The worst one I encountered myself was an old console with a large portion of the action fused together with bird droppings. It turned out that it had sat for years with the top lid open and an occupied birdcage overhead. At the customer's insistence, I managed to clean it and get it working again, and was actually able to tune it fairly well at 1/2 tone low (the customer didn't want to pay for additional tunings, which I thought would be a waste of time anyway).
As a lot of people like the sound of the piano before more than after it might be that the before tuning was in just intonation for this particular key of the song "A Thousand Miles". OR maybe we just like wonky sounds. After all guitarists use chorus effectpedals to achieve exactly that: The same two notes just slightly detuned to each other.
The mice droppings is a real thing. There was an outbreak in the early 90’s which resembled Covid 19. It happened on Indian reservation. That area had received a lot of rain, which helped a certain tree to produce more nuts than usual, which in turn attracted much more mice to be present & invade homes. Well the mice left their dropping & when the droppings dried & was disturbed, it released a very dangerous airborne pathogen & adversely affected human beings’ respiratory system. A few people passed away until they figured out what it was & how to treat it came to the scientists almost instantaneously. I love watching these videos!
Ngl, I kina thought the piano sounded better before it was tuned; the partially the of tune strings gave it some extra color and the main notes were still discernible (tho I know that will very quickly start degrading as the tuning worsens..)
my family got my grandma’s piano, and rumor has it, mice chewed away some felt pieces in the piano. it was a simple fix, and peppermint oil trick noted!
I’m pretty sure that the reason why peppermint oil works is because it’s really strong, and I hear that minty scents can really damage an animal’s sense of smell or something
I’d be curious how far the pitch raise had to go for that initial tuning. What is the hourglass for? Is it just so time doesn’t get away from you while working?
Hi, thanks for the comment. I’ve had a couple people comment things like this so I figured I should address it. The piano had multiple very expensive issues to fix, and the mouse nest was just “the straw that broke the camels back.” It would have been more expensive to fix the piano completely than to buy a newer/used piano.
I think what cause him to say that wasn’t only because it’s been nesting by rats but also because it’s a free piano, he has said it a few times before about it, a free piano tend to has more damage therefore people would spend more money than buying a used one.
Hi, guys! I'm newfag in theme, so have a question: i feeling interested in piano preparing/tuning/reparing but now i'm have only digital piano and no experience with this kind of work. How do you think what amount of time it will takes to become a commercial piano tuner/reparer (money's hill is not the goal😅) and what recources and tips can you suggest for beginner piano lover?) Thank you very much, With regards, Oleg.
Hey! Glad you’re interested in this, there’s a big need for it around the world right now. I have a video coming out about this very very soon. it will be a “full length” video on my TH-cam channel, so keep an eye out for that
Where do you work out of? I got a piano sitting in my garage that I don’t wanna throw out but I just might have to. It’s dirty, out of tune, the hammers are all worn and gross. It needs a lot of help
Question. At the church, we received as a gift a Baldwin up right piano that is in very good shape. We have it tuned every 6 months and it holds its tune well between tunings. The tone is wonderful. The issue is that I have adjusted the sustaining pedal several times, but just can't seem to get it right. With the pedal down, it does sustain, but not up to my/our expectations. Like the pads are not touching, the strings ( I have looked) but doesn't have that real sustain that we would like, In short, adjusting the bolts/nuts at the pedal doesn't fix the the problem. Any suggestions?
A HEPA filter in the vacuum cleaner, but also an N95 on your face, and ventilating the area as much as possible. Hantavirus is no joke.

I use an nbc filter. Kinda the same just with extra carbon layer for more disease filtering

You should learn that modification of the Howl's Moving Castle finale! It sounds amazing on pianos before they get tuned. Amazing video❤
why does the before sound better than the after
It was still out of tune after... But only part of the keys, which made it sound worse.
Warmer tunings tend to sound more soothing to the ears
I love your videos! They actually inspired me so much that I've started on the path to becoming a certified piano tech / tuner.

That’s awesome! This comment made my day :) Keep me updated.
I have heard the peppermint oil trick, but I’ve also heard that it could be dangerous for some pets, so be careful about where you put it

At least you didn't find any live mice, like I once did in an old reed organ.
As far as tuning, this piano didn't sound nearly as off as some of your others.
