I like to use both cause my charms can move 360. It’s a personal preference

What size jump rings and split rings are you using?
I like to use 8 or 10mm

What do you do to cover the missing space at the top where you taking the loop off at the top?
It don’t be a missing space if you twist it off carefully. Grab from bottom and try to twist it off with pliers
