Is there any easy way of remembering all the different Mahjong hands and their point values? The base game itself is very simple and straightforward but remembering all those hand types and the points associated with them can be very intimidating.
There are official small-sized, printable cheat sheets out there that you can hand out to every player or another way is to start out with very basic win conditions (I call them Yaku as I play the japanese Riichi variant but overall it brings the point across). As you play more games, you naturally see Yaku more often and remember them the natural way but you can also add more Yaku into your personal mix time by time. I began with 3 to 4 Yaku in the beginning and remembered almost all after two weeks of playing, the rest I added out of personal interest and it doesn't take much effort that way c: But I can relate to how the whole list of Yaku feel daunting as a beginner. it's like "...I have to remember all of them!?" but it really isn't the case, just relax and have fun. Is it right after the leader throw his/her first tile at the start of the game or is it when every one has picked up their first tile from the first draw wall and tossed their first tile?
1. I'm not sure quite what you mean with this, but if I'm understanding correctly; when you gang/kong, you take from a small set of discarded tiles at the beginning, called the "dead wall". These tiles are not used in the hand, basically so you can't be 100% sure what tiles are in the game. 2. You can do it whenever you want; basically if it's matching the same number and suit, you can call anytime, but if it completes a sequence, it's only the player before you. 3. You can start pung, kong, and chi right on the first discard. Anytime someone discards is eligible.
That is pretty cool. The emerald backs to your deck are quite exquisite. Looks fun, although still complicated. It was a missed opportunity not to have mahjong in Shenmue. They had the parlor and the tables, just did not have it playable. Sad really.
In theory you could use 4 double-six american domino sets to play a mahjong variant. With a 14 tile wall, a 10 tile hand, with no claims for runs using rules close to chinese classical.
Very nice instructional Mahjong learning video. though is still confusing to me it give a little better understanding of this game. now I only wish I can find some people to play with in life instead of theory.
You can with a Gong in your hand. They didn't cover this. When you call a tile, you have to discard another tile immediately. The reasoning for this is that when you call a tile, you gain one tile and this needs to be counteracted by a discard. However, this poses a problem for the Gong. When you call Gong, you net gain zero tiles (you have gained one tile, but now you need 15 tiles to win instead of 14). To solve this problem, you must draw a tile from the dead wall and then discard to maintain the balance. If you form a quad without using other players' tiles, you are allowed to call Gong for exactly this reason. Gong and Zimo are the only two calls that can be made without taking opponent tiles.
may I ask, what happens to the Gang combination is it counted as three tile-combination too? can you have three Gang combinations since its 12 plus one pair?
Anytime you call gang/Kong, you get a bonus tile from the “dead wall” (back of the wall). That brings your hand back up to balance: meaning you still need four melds and a pair.
In the version I play which is very similar to this, each time you 'gang' everyone has to pay you immediately depending on what the amount is set to prior to the game starting. You can also win if you manage to 'gang' all your sets.
Can you win if you have two Gongs (or Kongs or Gangs whatever you wanna call them) and two Pongs with no pairs? Or the pair is a must. I mean 2 Kongs=8 Tiles 2 Pongs=6 tiles, so 8+6=14.

So you can’t win with a gong on your set?
4 set 1 pair to win, what happens if in that set you have a gong or even 2 can you still win?
3 sets, 1 gong , 1 pair good to win.
Thank you I learned a lot
can anyone tell me if there is a Chinese Mahjong game available online??
may I ask, what happens to the Gang combination is it counted as three tile-combination too? can you have three Gang combinations since its 12 plus one pair?
No. (AAAA), (BBBB), (CCCC) , (DDD), (XX) is what u need.
Anytime you call gang/Kong, you get a bonus tile from the “dead wall” (back of the wall). That brings your hand back up to balance: meaning you still need four melds and a pair.
I’m curious though - does geng only make extra points? Or are there variants where you can win with it?
In the version I play which is very similar to this, each time you 'gang' everyone has to pay you immediately depending on what the amount is set to prior to the game starting. You can also win if you manage to 'gang' all your sets.
i like your tattoo sleeves :)
Can you win if you have two Gongs (or Kongs or Gangs whatever you wanna call them) and two Pongs with no pairs? Or the pair is a must.
I mean 2 Kongs=8 Tiles 2 Pongs=6 tiles, so 8+6=14.
When you have a gong, you can draw one more tile from the wall to add into your set, to replace the extra tile
The pair is a must. (AAAA), (BBBB), (CCC), (DDD) , (PP). See, 16 tiles in total.
Must have one pair to win.
