    50 years from now the camper may be long gone, you may forget every place you went, but the memory of the time spent with your dad will be solid gold, trust me, my 50 years has past, I've seen the country, done wonderous things , but some of my best memories are of the times my dad and I did some goofy project together

    • @HondroB
      @HondroB  2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Hey Seymour! Now ain’t that the truth! This was our first big project together and it was a time I’ll cherish for life! Thanks for sharing your wisdom! Here’s to more goofy projects! 😝 and remember to enjoy the bumps in the road haha!

    SHOEBOX, I am a late watcher, lol.
    I just watched this video.
    Anyways, it's good to see you still have a good relationship with your dad. Cherish that!!!!
    I love your shoebox camper.
    We all learn as we go. That's what life is all about, MEMORIES.
    My father passed away about a decade ago. I love that wood stove. Get yourself a fire extinguisher, carbon monoxide detector and a smoke detector.
    Also led Christmas lights. I use the blue ones at night. They only use a couple of watts of power.

      Hey thanks for the comment! You're not late we are just getting started here :) Hoping to upload a lot mroe soon. Life is about memories and learning as we go!! Time with dad is the best, i'm sure your father is proud of you. Got the fire safety gear!! God speed!

    Not only weight is an issue, there is no insulation. Rigid panel insulation would have added practically no weight.

  • @TreDeuce-qw3kv
    @TreDeuce-qw3kv ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Commend the effort, and don't mean to be critical, but there are a lot of built in issues with this build. Number one has to be weight due mostly to full 2"x4" framing.
    Other issues will be the lack of thermal break and a water tight or resistant membrane between metal siding, roof, and wood structure which will cause moisture build up under metal, evidence of which was the water on the ceiling which likely wasn't an actual leak but condensation due to cold outside temperatures and the warm to hot interior extracting moisture from the air that condenses on the metal.
    I suggest pulling the metal and applying some form of a thermal break and moisture/leak prevention membrane
    As it appears, this is a summer 'only' camper and in its current state has no need for a stove.
    I grew up in the Okanogan Valley just about 50-miles south of the border. We were often up into Okanagan, to Penticton, Kelowna, and other points north as my dad was an avid golfer and as an avid fly fisherman and head of the Okanogan County Health Dept was doing research into the condition of, and how to clean up of the Okanogan River and Okanagan Valley systems.

    Nice build. I built my own wood framed fiberglass camper shell in 1987 after ETS'ing from the Army. Inspired by a friend in Hawaii, surf board builder who made his own. 1x3 wood strips are super good for framing especially if your skin is rigid (sheet alum, or fiberglass). Today closed cell spray foam will offer a rigid waterproof structural member. I would offer that you should locate a semi trailer repair shop to buy a single piece of alum sheet. I bought a 14' piece x 105'" for $250 last year.

    • @HondroB
      @HondroB  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey thanks for commenting, and thank you for your service!! All really great tips in here. A big single piece of aluminum would be great for my roof, I might have to try that on my next repair job. I'm shaping a surfboard right now and I think a camper out of foam would be awesome haha. God speed!

    Making my own shoebox except it will mounted to a utility trailer. Can definitely get stressful, Especially when the people that don't want to help have the most to say about what you're doing wrong. Good build! Looks like a lot of fun.

    I watched a lady build a sheep herders trailer from a ole landscaping trailer. Great insights for her build and with the ramp , she kept it to use it as a folding deck . She also had a split entry door and her side walls were designed just like a gypsy/sheep herders trailer .
    So they angle out slightly which gives ya more space inside .
    Awesome work and cool time spent with your faja .

    • @eddiereyna2998
      @eddiereyna2998 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I’ve seen that one and as I have a 20’ landscaping trailer with 4’ walls , I got turned to her build .
      Though I’d much rather want to build a camper for my 4 door Longbed Duramax.
      She’s bought and paid for and I still want to plan to overhaul the engine and add a lot of upgrades to her and the transmission and suspension.

    The SHOE BOX,
    Yes sir I am so grateful 🙏 that you have your own build camper!!! This is way cool 😎! I am in a 8.5. X 20 foot car hauler trailer that I am building to live in full time, pulling it with a 2011 4x4 Trunda short bed, so I am way ready to build my own truck camper of my own.
    I have been to TH-cam University for 14 years now and I have seen a lot, but I really like your build!!! There are some builds that are made out of pure foam 😳.
    So I will combined the build. Thank you for posting!!! BLESSINGS TO you and yours!!! Merry Christmas!

    Shoebox indeed! I came upon this video after a long day building a stakeside/lumber rack/toolbox on a long bed 35 year old Dodge. The next step will be a tailgate/barn door, and a two foot tall topper for the lumber rack, half-width sleeping loft, insulated floor and benches over the wheel wells with storage boxes fore & aft. You guys did a great job with this build, and gave me many good ideas!

    Shoebox!!! Nice vid man (i am late to the party). I have a 1st gen 4runner I want to build like this (still planning) and the best thing about them is it will have an inside pass thru to the drivers area!!! I will have to be lighter though.
    Questions. Can you give me some battery info? How big, what all do you run, how long it typically lasts. You may have it in a vid and I have not gotten there yet if so no worries I will get to it.

    • @HondroB
      @HondroB  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thats awesome man i'm stoked for your build!! I do have a video where i briefly run through my electrical so feel free to find it on my channel. Personally for your type of build I would recommend a battery power station such as goal zero. I have a 240 amp hour deep cycle battery charging from my alternator, and it runs mostly lights, but can also charge my phone, and usb items like cameras etc. I have never had it run out with the alternator charge but i'd say lasts about 3-5 days depending on use.

    I have a cap and a really high garage. It is easier if you find the exact center, install 1/2" bolts and use another truck and a pulley with hooks and cables to lift the cap or camper up and down. A high tree or frame would work.

    I'm getting ready to build an 8' x 14' log cabin on my 1973 Dodge D600 [2 ton]. I'm in the design stage right now. You over-engineered the frame, but that is far better than under-engineering! I am debating steel vs. aluminum vs. wood for the frame. Whether or not I build an extension over the cab of the truck will be a big factor in determining which material I use. This video provides a lot of insight into my choice. Thanks!

    one could tuck a tiny square of kale-wool (spun ceramic insulation fabric) where that chimney touches the wood.

      @HondroB  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s smart! That’s actually what I did! I stuffed some fire proof wool insulation in there!

    Make sure the air bag helper suspension is installed with about 1/2" pre- load and run separate fill valves for left and right then truck will be more stable . Do not run a T together although T gives more suspension flex with air bags plumbed together it will add more sway to Camper hauling.....
    I Have a 3/4ton 8ft bed truck, And I had a realy old fully equiped Pickup camper that I got for $500. My Dad and I Hunted every year out of that for about 6 years Dad loved it !

    Your shoe box, I run a 950 eagle cap on my f350 super duty, I think you should add a leaf and possibly airbags to the rear suspension. I did double add a leaf and airbags. It helps center load and ease strain on the frame of the truck. Not telling you what to do, just a thought
