I'm 61. Thank you for Uriah Heep. My favorite band (1970-1978). Best composer (Ken Hensley), best vocals (Byron-Hensley-Kerslake), best bass guitar (Gary Thain).
One of my favorite bands of all time, and a very pleasant reminder of this 65 year old’s youth. They didn’t get much respect from rock music critics for some reason, but what do critics ever know?
The legendary Uriah Heep all excellent musicians with the great vocals of David Byron.(sadly missed)Who I rate as the greatest rock vocalists (so versatile) PS Mick Box is a great guitarist who is still going.(such a humble man)
This is the first rock album I listened to, when I was 16, thanks to my sister. David's vocals are just beautiful. For me, Uriah Heep is number one. Thanks for this!
David Byron the greatest rock vocalist in my opinion. Rain on this album is 3 minute perfection.Good to see you loving this awesome band from the early to mid 70's.
@lazarus550 I totally agree David’s stage presence and Vocals are Brilliant imo a certain Mr Mercury learnt his stagecraft from Mr Byron. Rain is wonderful rock ballard 🎶👌🎤🎸
The Magician’s Birthday is true story telling. The happiness of the birthday celebration is slowly taken over by an EVIL force. That’s why the happy part fades out and the dangerous part takes over. Very good of Nick to pick up on that. Great great song.
My guitarist and me have been playing together since 1978, and almost every time we've played out (usually two to five nights a week) we've done this song ("The Magician's Birthday"). We are so in tune with each other, and the guitar/drum section has evolved so much, that it never gets stale or boring. We like to end our last set of the night with either this song or "Buzzard" by Armageddon. We've played millions of clubs in Milwaukee and Madison, along with another gazillion in Oshkosh/Appleton, Green Bay, Chicago, Rockford and Minneapolis/St. Paul, and almost everywhere we are, there's people that have seen us many many times. If we don't do "The Magician's Birthday", they go home disappointed. Such a classic and iconic tune. And a blast to play.
Uriah Heep is one of my favorite bands. The musicianship of everyone in the band was amazing. Every instrument is heard throughout the songs, unless written that way. I really enjoyed this marathon. Many other Heep songs to discover.
Awesome album awesome band! One of my all time fav bands. This album was my intro to Uriah Heep. One song on the album I never gave much listening to was Rain but it has recently become one of my fav by them, so beautiful. Sweet Lorraine has to be my all time fav from Uriah Heep. Such a great fun song. How these guys never get their due in rock is beyond me?
Mick Box is such a great guitarist, isn't he? He doesn't always play flashy, he plays with feeling and his solos always fit perfectly with the music. Very underrated as one of the guitar gods of the 70s. If you like his "wah" sound, Ritchie Blackmore used it a LOT on the first 4 Deep Purple albums - also great stuff.
Hi Nick , I get exactly what you are talking about when buying albums. In the 70's it's all I wanted to spend my wages on and then getting home and the ritual of playing a vinyl record. Today I buy mostly cd's [ My vinyl collection A-Z is pretty extensive after many decades ] I do buy cd's alot going into town or just via Amazon. I don't have Spotify. I have always prefered the physical album. I'm the same with dvd's if it's a movie or live concert I really want. I got shelves of box sets ... Lots of 70s tv . Lol, like "Tarzan" starring Ron Ely [ Best Tarzan ever ] .. "Man in a Suitcase" ... "Department S" ... "The Time Tunnel" ... "Land of the Giants" ... "Lost in Space" ... "Doctor Who" > Massive fan with many dvd's + box sets. ... I'm kinda off the subject of Uriah Heep .... So ...Brilliant band ! Love their music and this is a great marathon. [ Maybe you will get to hear my favourite, "July Morning "..original studio version remastered is awesome ...especially the guitar whip lashes !!! - only on that version ] Byee Jim X
And not one female voice in there. Saw them in ‘72, all of these songs, Demons & Wisards, Look at yourself albums and on and on, super concert and I just happen to have this cd in my car. Was 19 then and 69 now, they still get to me 🎸😎 And they still rock today but only Mick Box is left of the originals, hard to believe the rest are all dead
Appreciate the review. I saw this band in 1977. Their harmonies and melodies with a metal/progressive edge were fantastic. The keyboards were the heart and soul of the band. However, it’s hard to not appreciate the awesome bass, guitar, drums and vocals and how they came together. To this day they are a very underrated band.
Like many I grew up with this album. After hearing "Sweet Lorraine" on radio I ran out and bought this album hoping the rest of the music would be just as good and I was not disappointed. I know the words to all the songs on this album because I played it so many times. Enjoying this blast from the past. 🤗
King Diamond is a HUGE fan of Heep's singer David Byron. I believe he named his son after him. David is my favorite singer by far. Sadly he died much too young. Heep, in general, is criminally underrated. They are an excellent heavy prog band (still going in fact -- Mick Box is their tireless guitar player).
The first band I saw live back in the early 70s. Their classic album is Demons and Wizards, well worth a full album playthrough. Great channel Nick, love the marathons.
Uriah Heep we're often referred to as 'the Beach Boys of rock' because they used complex 5 part harmonies in a lot of their songs, as you've no doubt noticed. A big influence on the sound of Queen who were big fans. If I were you Nick I'd go directly to the Live 73 album. Its the best overview of their work at that time. And July Morning on that album stands up against anything by Zeppelin, Purple etc who were their contemporaries at the time.
The greatest. They have the greatest fan's, the vocals block and step harmonies 🎵🎶 david was for me was magical. Saw him many times in 70s. Such dynamic and tone and beautiful range. He was also a great front man..heep forever. Long live the past 🎵🎶🎸🎹
Sweet Lorraine was meant to be a "party tune", about a chick that the band had met sometime during their tours, according to David Byron. Yes, Mick Box had a very unique sound to his wah pedal. Nobody ever sounded quite like him.
This comes close to a perfect marathon. It's one of my 2 favourite albums of the band, an album, which has only good songs. It has to have the opener and the epic ... and with the others you can't go wrong. So I shut up and enjoy 😄 Sunrise - I love David Byron's british accent so much, also the background vocals. The whole composition is great. Intermission - Nick likes Mick Box - my thought : wait til you hear the Magician 😂😂 Echoes in the dark - good example, why I like "old" music so much, you hear exactly each instrument, no layers, if there is a second guitar, it's played by Ken Hensley Sweet Lorraine - this intro "winds" into your brain and you'll never forget. Magician's birthday - my no 1 Uriah Heep song - let's see what Nick thinks 😆YEAH, this guitar solo always lifts me up to somewhere I don't know and I don't want it to end. Your face tells a story 🤘 Thank you Eric for this fantastic marathon and Nick for you reaction. PS: one of the reasons, why Uriah Heep didn't get the recognition, they deserved, was the musical press; after the release of album nr 1 the prognosis was a short life for this band. Now look, who's still there, although only 1 member is still alive. And the fans loved them right from the beginning. The Magician's birthday was one of 3 Top 10 albums in Germany
Too much Nick! This reaction choice is so good. Isn't Magician's Birthday an awesome song? I love the kazoos and the vocoder. The drumming is amazing, as is the bass work. And Mick Box's guitar work is to die for. Hensley's keyboards do so much to set the mood, and lyrically we are taken to magical realms. I always thought the studio production on this was top notch too. This is an epic song man. I have been digging this since the 70s. Uriah Heep!!
As the morning sun rises,I’m standing on a remote hill in 69’s Vietnam, with legs spread,in defiance of the dangers of my coming day.Music was the main venue there to remain in contact with the WORLD and take the edge off of a busy day.Sunrise perfectly expressed that feeling of invincibility a few years later. In that sense,in was not just a piece of music, but a comforting message.
Ken Hensley was a big part of UH. Great keyboards and singer and slide guitarist. Sings a lot with Byron. Peeps don't realize that when you hear slide on guitar in UH it isn't Box, its Hensley. Also, the 'Ahhs' on Sunrise are shared by Byron and Hensley. Hensley passed away last year. RIP All slide guitar on Echoes in the Dark is Ken Hensley. It is not Mick Box.
A bit of rock trivia here. Rush was the backup band for UH in there early years. UH keyboardist is the one who taught Geddy to play keys. Later when Rush became more popular they brought UH as there support band
Some interesting info for you: 1) The drummer on The Magician's Birthday was Lee Kerslake who would eventually go on to play on the first two Ozzy Osbourne albums. 2) Uriah Heep got the idea for their lush harmonies from the band Three Dog Night. The first time Heep toured the USA they opened for Three Dog Night who had become very successful at that time. They heard the three part harmonies from Cory Wells, Danny Hutton and Chuck Negron and decided to add that sound to their arsenal.
You're totally right Nick! Uriah Heep definitely belongs to the Big Four of British hard rock. There is a pretty general consensus on this. Also, Mick Box came number two in the polls back then only after Jimi Hendrix for using the wah-wah pedal. So yes, many players can still learn from him. And finally, Ken Hensley always claimed that he basically wrote music to support his stories (i.e. lyrics), which is why you were able to see the connection immediately. Mystery solved.
Great band from my youth. I always think they are a cross between Deep Purple and Pink Floyd, with a bit of Barclay James Harvest mixed in, but of course, have their own defined style.
Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep were the main four bands of the genre back in the day. Heep never got that much love in North America, but they were absolutely huge in Europe.
UFO and Scorpions were up there, too. If I'm not mistaken, Heep were the pioneers of this style, but weren't widely recognized. The critics, for some reason, were hard on them.
SOOO RIGHT BRO! IN GERMANY, JAPAN & THE SCANDINAVIAN COUNTRIES❤😊; LATER ON USA & UK ~ BUT NOT THAT MUCH 😢! YEAH, THEY WERE A BIG PART OF THE FAMOUS "ROCKY FAB FOUR" 😊❤😊!!!!! LOVE THEM ALL 🎉❤😊! ! ! TILL THE END OF MY DAYS 😊😊😊❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉 BERNIE GERMANY 😊
Loved the review of my selections from this wonderful album my brother! Up next Demons and Wizards?! Us fantasy nerds must stick together 😂🤣😂! Love and respect! ✌️🤘✌️
Thanx for this of my all time favorite Band. I'm missing only something from their Masterpiece Album "Look at yourself", but i think you have another Marathon in the pipeline. All thumbs up for your Music taste.
As soon as I see Uriah Heep or hear Graybeard sponsored the marathon, I know it's a winner! Many times I have considered submitting Magician's Birthday and am so happy to see Nick's reaction to it. I agree, Demons and Wizards should be next, it has special memories for me. A friend of mine recorded it on cassette for me when I was in high school and I wore that tape out, then bought the 8 track, cassette, album and eventually the CD! And as a side note, the big assignment in our video production class in my senior year of high school was to make a music video. My choice was Magician's Birthday. I had a cape and everything, we went out to a local park with lots of trees in the cold fall weather and shot the video. Sadly there was trouble with our editing equipment so it was never finished. Great memories though!
A great refresher course in Uriah Heep. Love the Wizards Birthday. Nice lineup Greybeard. Stealing will always be my favorite Uriah Heep song. Great reaction. The synthesizer is moog Ipronounced mooooooog like the cow sound.
Awesome! Nice Heep selections by Greybeard. Nick, if you've not listened to the following, my next Heep Marathon recommendations in concert order would be: Blind Eye, Devil's Daughter, Stealin', July Morning and Lady in Black. I truly believe that Greybeard would approve.
I've never been much for metal in general. But Uriah Heep were an exception. Some really imaginative songwriting, serious quality musicianship, and Byron was a real progenitor with this style of vocals. This is my favorite album of theirs along with Demons and Wizards. Excellent reaction video, Nick. And you expressed yourself just fine. Sweet Lorraine does have something of a southern rock feel, a bit like Ozark Mtn. Daredevils, Savoy Brown, or Blackfoot.
Thanks, Nick, and GMM! Heep was one of my favorites as a teen / budding guitarist. My favorite album of theirs is "Demon and Wizards", would love to have you react to any (or all!) of the songs on there. Even more amazing, IMHO.
Great album!!!!! Deep cuts with lots of melodic qualities. Metal opera. Top three bands in my early 70s were Led Zeppelin, Moody Blues, and Uriah Heep.
Cheers Nick, Echoes in the Dark is one I used to really like, reminds me a little of Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother. As ever, Byron's vocals are an excellent narrative.
Uriah Heep original lineup is one of my all time favorites from the old days. To really hear the energy of this amazing band, check out the Live record from 1977. It opens with Sunrise from this record. Gary Thain was one of the best bassist ever in prog rock history. His bass playing really drives this band. R.I.P.
Huge Uriah Heep fan back when they first came out in the 70's, haven't listened to them for quite a while. It's hard for me to hear this now & not think of the movie "This Is Spinal Tap." You & Lex should check it out Nick, great movie about a prog rock band in the same time period as Uriah Heep, it's a "documentary" spoof.
Респект вам снова за мой любимый Uriah Heep! А почему на этот раз рядом с вами той красивой девушки не было? / Respect to you again for my beloved Uriah Heep! And why was that beautiful girl not next to you this time?
@@NicknLex Let it heal faster. And as for the fact that "she also loves UH" - this is not at all surprising, because you can't help but love such a group!
Great album. Not quite as good as Demons & Wizards, but a great one nonetheless!!!! 👍👍 The sound quality of the vinyl wasn't quite as good as Demons & Wizards for some reason. Different studio or different sound engineer? Don't know. Guitar jam in TMB with Kerslake on drums is always fun to listen to. Thanks @greybeardmusicman2280 !!!!
This band I consider UNIQUE. Usually most bands have a more or less constant type of sound from one song to the other. UH allways has surpised me with so many different sounds in one record or even within a song!. Compare Salisbury to Rain and July Morning, or Look at Yourself to Lady in Black to Circus or The Magitian´s Birthday (this song has a lot of different parts within) and so on. Thy also have different rythms within many of their songs. Also many superb lyrics, Bass and drum lines and so on. Must hear their acoustic concert with guestsThijs Van Leer from Focus and Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull. Though for me their music after the 80´s is not the same they still have many marterpieces to look for. Keep listening and thanks from Venezuela!
Robert Plant said in an interview that English Rock vocalists sound like Southern rock vocalists and that is why English Rockers were so big in the Southeast US. We hillbillies in the Southeast are mostly British b/c that is who settled here. Nice catch on Sweet Lorraine. Uriah Heep was huge in the 70s in the US.
So far you are focusing on the David Byron era. Next is the John Lawton era. There are some very good Heep songs from that era as well. "FreenEasy, Free Me, Illusion, The Dance" are four good ones from the Innocent Victim album.
@@bookhouseboy280 Absolutely! I had forgotten about this song and had to give it a listen again. Now I can't get the damned thin out of my head! But then again most John Lawton songs do that to me. A unique and powerful singer on par with or just a cut above (heresy I know) David Byron. That's why I describe it a different eras that are worthy of Nick's reactions. Bernie Shaw isn't any slouch either! At any rate Innocent Victim is an often overlooked and underrate LP. Thanks for pointing out Choices!
HOWDY, DUDES.! C H O I C E S I S J U S T I N C R E D I B L E ❤🎉😮😊!!!!! ESPECIALLY HERE, THE BAND SHOWS ITS ABILITY FOR CREATING SO - CALLED BOMBAST ROCK 😊! I'M 67 ~ STILL MY NO. 1 DESPITE BS / DP / LZ AND M A N Y OTHERS (i. e. AMAZING & EXCITING IRON MAIDEN / KISS / GRAND FUNK _RAILROAD) TILL THE END OF MY DAYS 😊🎉❤!!! BERNIE GERMANY 😊
David Byron and Gary Thain, two monsters in the music. ❤❤

Rain is beautiful off this album. David byrons voice is superb on it. One of the most underrated rock vocalists.
A favorite of theirs.
Ken Hensley's version of Rain on his solo album "Proud Words" is fantastic too.
@@shiftingperception The album is actually called "Proud Words on a Dusty Shelf" There is a song on it called "Proud Words"
Ken Hensley wrote and sang this one.
The amazing Mick Box on Guitar!!

Excelente Uriah Heep. La mejor época con David Byron como vocalista. Saludos desde Argentina !
Uriah Heep was a very eccentric band with a very unique style - They were one of the first hard-core progressive Rock Bands.
And how great these tunes - and recording itself - pass the test of time!! It was recorded 51 years ago!! Not naive, not dated - fresh and hooking!
This is the first rock album I listened to, when I was 16, thanks to my sister. David's vocals are just beautiful. For me, Uriah Heep is number one. Thanks for this!

Such a classic and iconic tune. And a blast to play.

THE WORLD'S MOST UNDER RATED BAND ! WONDER WHY ....
I recall by Uriah Heep Salisbury and listening to the 16 minute opus about war over and over. Then I liked Easy Livin' and Lady in Black

Saw Heep back in 1971, deaf for a week, but so good, harmonies were as good live.
Спасибо за Uriah heep❤
So glad to see you do more uriah heep
"Rainbow Demon" is a MUST!
Demons and Wizards is essential Uriah Heep.
One of my favorite bands I grew up with. Thank you for this Nick. Many memories. Good and bad. God Bless.
As a huge Uriah Heep Fan, l really enjoyed Your Review.
Many Thanks.
Keep Rockin'🎸🎸

Not many Guitar/drum combo solos out there but Magician's Birthday has one, Box and Kerslake kill it!
ESPECTACULAR HEEP !!!
These guys were so good live!
There's a vid of them performing Circus live with Ian Anderson & his flute
👍👍👍
This is a brutal group !!!
The song Tears in My Eyes from the live album 1973 is really the best. There are many more!
I like Gypsy off the Live 1973 album. Ken Hensley kicks ass on the synthesizer.
The second album I ever bought. The first was Demons and Wizards.
Hard rock Kazoo's!
Moog synthesizer if I’m not mistaken. It does sound weird, in a sense.
Top three bands in my early 70s were Led Zeppelin, Moody Blues, and Uriah Heep.
their on tour in 2024
Paradise/ the Spell
Cheers Nick, Echoes in the Dark is one I used to really like, reminds me a little of Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother. As ever, Byron's vocals are an excellent narrative.
You really need to listen to the song Paradise/The Spell from the Demons and Wizards album. It's epic!
If I remember correctly, that screeching keyboard was less painful in analog format...
Nick.......You need to do some Up to Date Uriah Heep. Awesome Stuff!!
From Lake's nearly perfect first album (1976)- On The Run, Time Bomb, Key To The Rhyme, Jesus Came Down, Between the lines.
Sponsor it. That first album is awesome. Key to the Rhyme
Uriah Heep original lineup is one of my all time favorites from the old days. To really hear the energy of this amazing band, check out the Live record from 1977. It opens with Sunrise from this record. Gary Thain was one of the best bassist ever in prog rock history. His bass playing really drives this band. R.I.P.
Live 1973 not 1977 my friend.
This is the Classic Version of UH, there were several different players on UH's first album and the pre album days.
Magicians Birthday is their Magus Opus.
Great reaction Nick. You should check out the live album (1973). Sunrise, Sweet Lorraine, July Morning, Easy Living are all much better live. Enjoy!
Agreed. Traveller in Time, Circle of Hands, and Tears in My Eyes live too.
@@bookhouseboy280 Dont forget about Gypsy.
add BOC a d budgie to that list there definitely underrated in there day aloha
Респект вам снова за мой любимый Uriah Heep! А почему на этот раз рядом с вами той красивой девушки не было? / Respect to you again for my beloved Uriah Heep! And why was that beautiful girl not next to you this time?
Back problems:( She loves Uriah Heep too
@@NicknLex Let it heal faster. And as for the fact that "she also loves UH" - this is not at all surprising, because you can't help but love such a group!
Sorry that I interchanged words - Magician's not Wizard's - it was in the referencing...
Pls try July Morning ! This is best song by Uriah Heep ! (I think…)
I saw them once when they ran out of songs and did Look at Yourself twice.
Great album. Not quite as good as Demons & Wizards, but a great one nonetheless!!!! 👍👍
The sound quality of the vinyl wasn't quite as good as Demons & Wizards for some reason. Different studio or different sound engineer? Don't know.
Guitar jam in TMB with Kerslake on drums is always fun to listen to. Thanks @greybeardmusicman2280 !!!!
I know it doesn’t have to be either/or, but I’ve always thought Heep was the band Deep Purple wanted to be.
I wish you would check out "Salisbury" from the Salisbury album. EPIC song by Heep!
They did that
One must think if The Wizard's Birthday was written for and about Timothy Leary in sort.
Try "It's A Beautiful Day" song Bombay Callin, you will see where Deep Purple got song Child in Time
So far you are focusing on the David Byron era. Next is the John Lawton era. There are some very good Heep songs from that era as well. "FreenEasy, Free Me, Illusion, The Dance" are four good ones from the Innocent Victim album.
Choices is another good one.
I read somewhere on the internet someone said uriah heep was a poor man's deep purple really pissed me off
DEAR MATE! DON'T BELIEVE WHAT SOME INTERNET PEOPLE WRITE ~ MANY A GOT A SHITTY CRAPPY LOUSY MIND 😢😢😢! ! JUST TRUST Y O U R FEELINGS ! BERNIE GERMANY 😊
That’s just a load of garbage! Some people have no appreciation for greatness. Uriah Heep and Deep Purple are both great, in different ways.
For the most part I feel Uriah Heep give an artificial drama to their songs as opposed to YES, ELP, early Kansas, and Renaissance.
