  • Black and white photography is pretty cool, and slowly but surely, it's coming back into the mainstream. I think you should seriously consider going B&W only for a month or two and seeing what happens...

    I take it for granted that everyone starts with black & white film. I am old, so when I was in high school, a photography class was available. I took photography. We had to bring out own camera, buy our own film, but the school provided the darkroom, instructors, and assignments. I LOVED that class (and took it more in college). Now that I am part of the digital world, I have yet to take a black and white image (but I miss it always). Love the show, keep it up, and I'm'ma gonna go fire up my old Nikkormat with a roll of b&w just to relive my nestalgia.

    i have my first roll of b&w film loaded into my camera right now and was already thinking that I didn't like how I was missing all the colorful shots around me... but thinking about it in terms of what I gain by trying to see the world in b&w is an awesome change of perspective that I really needed- thanks!!

      Yes!!! Good luck, and if the first roll doesn't stick, keep trying. If your lab pushes for free, I definitely recommend shooting Ilford HP5 at ISO 1600 and pushing two stops :)

    Bro, I'm so glad I started my photo journey with completely manual film camera and my first roll of film is black and white. I think it's a hard way of learning photography completely from scratch, but boy it's teaches you a lot. B&W ❤

    Digital shooter here. Ever since I put my camera to the monochrome setting, my understanding of composition has sky rocketed for street photography. It always me to better see the shapes, textures, shadows, and highlights. I'm obsessed with black and white. Like you said it removes the distractions and you can really focus in on the subject and story you want to tell

    I've just gotten into street photography and photography stuff, and I have a super cheap digital camera I'm using, and it has a black and white setting. I took it to a wedding, and shot some really cool photos. I definitely agree that you do think differently when shooting in black and white. Also, it's really fun to do.

    I never understood the appeal until I tried it... learning how to "paint with light" never made more sense when it finally clicked for me.
    When I went back to color I started looking for shadows and differences in brightness that added so much more depth that I didn't notice before.

    For me starting out shooting and trying out BW was big. Realizing you couldn't just take a picture of something that was beautiful and needing to find a way to shift to do something interesting. Then you get that first roll with some great facial expressions, unexpected shadows and contrast, and you start thinking about light and dark differently. Even now I shoot color on my DSLR but I almost always switch to BW in editing, since it feels like that's what the picture I was taking was meant to be. Or maybe it's because I hate editing color. I got into photography from photojournalism books my buddies and I dug through for flyer fodder and getting better at BW feels like getting closer to those images that made me want to do it.

    My periodic wake up call is B&W using the sunny 16 rule. Before I leave home I look out the window and estimate a setting based on sunny 16. I restrict myself to full stop adjustment like 100, 200, 400, 800 shutter speed and ISO and 4, 5.6, 8 and 11 Aperture. A sunny day may start at 400, 8, 200. I never look at the numbers, histogram or live view again and just rely on listening to the clicks (3 clicks per 1 stop). This means I have to recall these clicks so if first image was at base 400, 8, 200 and second image is 200, 5.6, 100 I am now three stops brighter, remember the three stops and continue through the day remembering the stop change when taking the next image.

    While I don't shoot film, I do keep my X-T3 set to the Acros film simulation 95% of the time so I'm seeing in BNW in the EVF. Somehow I think it simplifies the scene and I feel like I do a better job with exposure somehow that way. BTW, I'm here for the wooden spoon! LOL! Seriously though, nice job, have a great day!

    A great photographer once reviewed my work and changed how much I shoot b/w forever when he saw how most of my work at the time was b/w and he commented "The thing is...black and white is a very FORGIVING medium..."
    And he's right. A very mediocre b/w photo seems to hide behind its feeling of novelty/nostalgia/hipness we associate with b/w
    That's not to say I don't love great b/w photographs, many of my favorite photographers almost exclusively shot/shoot b/w...but learning, shooting and appreciating color work has been the greatest gift to my relationship with photography 🌈

      @@huntercreatesthingsfor sure, the guy that gave me the perspective I mentioned was highlighting how it can very easily become a crutch - that REALLY resonated with me as something I could see I was leaning on. I still love b/w but I'm much more selective about when I shoot it, more intentional. 👌

    I think you only really need colour for few things like flowers, country flags, traffic lights, car lamps and some items for accent. With some simple parametric (saturation and/or hue) masking you could leave only that important colours. If a car has some really nice deep paint, you could keep just its colour. With people such accenting works very well sometimes for things like a purse, shoes, an umbrella etc. You could apply selective colourization even to a scanned black and white film photo (a bit sacrilegious, I know), like giving that telephone booth it's red colour, could be really cool, who cares if that's a cliche. Or even drawing over a print. I know people did that in early days.
    TL;DR: colour is good but you don't need absolutely everything to be in colour and you can use it selectively.
    Also a good check is to see your pic in bw, if it's boring, then likely it would be boring in colour too (with some exceptions), a work with contrast while viewing in bw might bring an improvement even if you intend to go with colour version.

    • @huntercreatesthings
      @huntercreatesthings  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agree - if it doesn't work in B&W, it probably won't work in colour!

  • @paulm8157
    @paulm8157 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Valid points. Do you use filters on your cam when shooting B&W film? Old school way of adjusting contrast in-camera. I found it difficult to visualize a scene in B&W (analog), but that improved when applying the zone system. Digital makes things so much easier - isn’t there a B&W only digital Leica model? Cheers!

    • @huntercreatesthings
      @huntercreatesthings  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I do - I've been known to shoot HP5 with a red filter and push to 3200... Zone system is a game changer for sure. There is indeed a monochrom(e) Leica, and there's also a few Pentax DSLRs with monochrome sensors!

      Maybe - I've shot some extremely sharp Agfa Scala b&w, but I think sharpness is pretty far down the priority list for film shooters these days!

      @@huntercreatesthings Sharpness is just one of the elements. Capturing fidelity, mixing fidelity tones, mastering different contrast ratios in one frame, composition and juxtaposition are a few others used. A master photographer can perform any of these at will. They can also choose not to use any of these if they want. The difference is some people can perform all of these elements, and some can perform most, and some photographer cannot perform any of these elements on a frame.
      I respect the person who can do all but chooses not to, more then the person who is force to perform a few of these techniques because they are not adept to performing all of them.
      Chemically there is less going on with B&W, B&W only has to capture light and dark tones, there are no crystalline mixing and taking space on the negative for color. The grain on black and white is finer and more uniform than color, this helps the macro details on the frame seem more pronounced than color.
      In Hollywood distributors have rescanned many of the Masters of B&W and also color movies from the pre-1970’s into 2K and 4K remasters. The black and white rescans attained more sharpness over time and less rolloff degrading over the decades.
      Kurosawa’s “Yojimbo” from 1961 has been rescanned and is all over TH-cam these days. Studied in schools. Notice how crisp this BW scan is compared to the Color scans of films from the same exact year.

      @@huntercreatesthings At least yours didn't die without you noticing until an hour of recording yourself later... Like mine did. I basically rage-quit and finished the videos a few weeks later, hah. I now record myself using OBS (camera as a webcam) using the rode wireless AND camera microphone as backup, saved as 4 channel audio on the video file. (I also use two wireless mics, one on my shirt and one in front of me)
      You can then select the right channels in your favorite video editor! Sadly my Sony A7RV or A6700 doesn't seem to support recording both using an external mic and internal mic
      I also had someone turn off the wireless while clipping it to her shirt. That was painful, because I only found out after. I learned so many ways to screw up my audio!
