    I'll bite the clickbait but no, you should not stop shooting at ISO 100. You should experiment with each setting of your camera and eventually you will realize it's not good to shoot at 12800 unless you don't care about editing that photo and also don't care about its quality for anything other than posting on instagram.

    Sometimes, it's not about trying to be invisible, but knowing when subjects don't mind or expect to have a photo taken. Examples could be at a parade, a fair, a party, guys doing skateboard tricks, a protest or anyone trying to draw attention to themselves in some way such as the way they're dressed or a cause that they're representing. In these cases, you can be very open about taking photos without any complaints.

    I've had my K1000 since 1987, and recently acquired another one from a friend of mine. I cut my teeth shooting film with one of these in high school photography class. The stark truth is that shooting with one of these, or a Pentax Spotmatic, which also has the matchstick exposure meter, is that you are more deliberate in the entire process of making a photograph. Something that I brought with me as I began shooting digital. I behave upon my digital cameras just as if I'm shooting with one of these old tanks. Outside of knowing what makes this all work, we should all develop (ha develop!) a behavior when we make pictures. And the spoon to hold the Rode mic...GENIUS! I fumble where to clip mine all the time.

    The first time I felt something truly special with my camera was after half a year of photography, during a month-long school project on the other side of the world in San Francisco. On my last night, I wandered the city one final time, already nostalgic about leaving. Every corner seemed to reveal "sad" compositions, almost as if the city itself shared my feelings.

    Great vid! A thought: not everyone sees photography as art or is trying to achieve art by taking photos. On the contrary, for most of us it's just fun pushing buttons while trying to keep moments of family or adventures. Even those who want to go beyond that often simply enjoy the process of taking photos, like singing a song composed by someone else. Or do it like stamp collecting, as a hobby and/or to show off to likeminded collectors and followers. There is nothing wrong with that. But I agree, if one wants his or her photos to be relevant one need different skills than booking a model, travelling or walking around a city while getting razor sharp, well exposed pictures.

    Another tip for semi-auto focusing if you have to use lower Aperture, like at night or longer lenses: when you start autofocus it first shifts focus further and backs off only if it missed focus.. so using back button focusing you can prefocus a bit closer then anticipated object and then autofocus would need less time to travel to focus point.

  • @ArtemMelanich
    @ArtemMelanich 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    10 years ago when I've started ISO was a big deal for me as colors just suck and I've tried to shoot it dark. Now with how much my skill, artistic sense and software developed it is just as you've said, doesn't matter that much as a grainy photo may even look better with right colors applied. I revisit my old photos that I've thought was ruined and rediscover some really cool ones with just a bit of edit. Though that is true more for a low color dimension photos like street and darkness or snowy days etc, for colorful landscapes or macro lower ISO still the best.

    Interesting video. I usually have a hard stop at ISO 3200 (like yourself originally). It feels wrong to go beyond that, which is kind of your point really. The problem is, I'm IQ obsessed, so it seems counterintuitive to use a high ISO. Maybe I should try it out 😊

  • @DeadGlassEyes
    @DeadGlassEyes 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    What you're saying is true as long as you stick to casual street photography, there's nothing wrong with that. I usually boost my ISO as well when I am shooting concerts, as does every other photographer. But when I am doing client work, like shooting a hotel or something, it's ISO 50 with f9.0 with a tripod. Because that stuff just has to be pristine. Time and place for everything.

    Several of my favorite photos have visible noise which adds to the 'creaminess' of the image or the impression that I wanted from the image. But I do think this advice is somewhat gear dependent. Those photos were great...they were also shot at ISO 800, on a 17 year old camera that becomes borderline unusable with ISOs much past that. Higher ISOs aren't the end of the world, but just how useful they actually are depends a lot on the gear you're using...and in some more extreme cases, it may genuinely be a limitation and a problem

    This kinda reminds that I love drawing with my young son. It frees me from over thinking drawing and worry about getting it exactly right. Especially when he was younger he just put pen, paint, ink to paper. A lot of his compositions had something beautiful to them. I began to draw a lot better with him. I guess getting back to that child state. At four he just picks up a camera and shoots and I remember being like hold on get everything right then shoot. Then you look at the screen and he has a pretty good photograph. When I'm taking a photograph I think of it more as seeing a photograph. I just feel like making a photograph puts too much emphasis on myself and less on the world we are observing.

When I'm in front of one of his paintings I wish I could've been then to witness what he saw unfolding, and to have my chance at finding compositions of my own!

    Photography was initially about the documentation of reality. It wasn’t about making art. While there is nothing wrong with using photography as an artistic medium, I feel photography is more about freezing a moment and immortalizing it. Whether it’s just for yourself or for others. Half way through the video you say that photography isn’t a science, but an art. It is more accurately a blend of the two. You take photos to preserve a moment, but you can make better photos using certain artistic elements. This comes from someone who finds joy in taking photos for others and capturing emotions and interactions; candid imagery. Telling a story through photos is more important to me than making one artistic frame

    I feel I always tried to shoot intentionally, I wouldn't call myself a street photographer, but I rather try to find vibes that I like. It may be a scene in a building, a road, sometimes a person and an activity, sometimes just a car. But most of my favourite photographs give me a vibe and a feeling, instead of being a memory or a landmark. I often take many photos when I am out, say 300 for 8 hours of walking around, but I often only feel that vibe and emotion with maybe one or two, which is what I want to work on next- less pictures, more art and emotion.

    Exactly. Takers and Makers. Plenty of people smarter than me have suggested learning the guidelines of composition and light and the “forgetting them.” Thank you Edward Weston. Approaching a subject with your learned knowledge bubbling away quietly somewhere in the background while all your antennas are fully functioning can take away pre-judgement and let you respond to your subject as only you can in that moment. The only thing worse than walking around with a mental checklist of Instagram bangers is standing in front of Stonehenge and shooting selfies with a suitcase full of costumes. I’m sure someone will prove me wrong - but personally, I didn’t come all this way to shoot myself.
