Not sure what the design aim was but the Storch comparison is clear. I was towed behind a French built Storch in 1973 at Fayence in France in a Wassmer Bijave glider (big,heavy) and was amazed to see the tug leave the ground well before the glider was ready to fly! Usually thr glider skims the ground while the tug builds up flying speed. You want to be careful with tiedowns with a parasol tail dragger of low weight

What a truly astounding milestone 👏 Congratulations mate 👍👍 if anyone has not seen your videos going back to the beginning, I most highly recommend they do so 😊 Don bucked or pulled where necessary, every rivet used in Frankenstein. He literally sat in his shed and figured out where he might find scrap material, how he would mould metal in to shapes machines would find difficult. How to fasten stuff together, make it as safe as if it were going onto a modern military helicopter, using components meant for entirely different applications, in truly innovative ways, providing a whole new outlook on sustainable use cases for products and their end of life in aviation. To say Don is the ultimate craftsman and one who inspires just by listening to what he sets out to achieve, is an understatement, to say the very least. Well done mate, keep ticking off those milestones towards the ultimate goal 👏

Hi Don. As far a your budget, I have built 2 airplanes from scratch as well as 5 restorations and I never had any money when I started, or when I finished so you must not need money! Ha ha. Great job it looks great, enjoy the ride, the first flight will be amazing.

Looks like a cross between a Fiesler Storch and a Cessna Bird Dog. I want one, it's a cool looking plane. Enjoy her. She looks like a tribute to your skills so I hope she doesn't let you down

I spent seven years building (and painting) a quickbuild RV-8. It was an immense job for me, working alone... but it doesn't compare to this. What a tremendously cool aircraft! And the topper: the Draco sticker in the cockpit! I have one on my hangar wall. Mike Patey was a major motivator during the course of my build. It was so cool to fly it to OSH AirVenture and show it to him!

Im building a zenith stol 750 and it’s slow going. I determined it’s the only way I’m gonna get in the air again and be able to afford to stay flying once it’s done.

It is beautiful.. but I think it would probably really optically benefit from a different cowling.. (or, when dreaming, even buying one of those Verner Radial Engines and sticking that upfront)
A radial would be very cool! When it came to firewall forward I was lucky enough to find the lycoming available at a price I could afford so it was like it was decided for me
Truly stunning craftsmanship; congrats on finishing such a huge project. (But... Even accomplished aero engineers occasionally get 'bit' by seemingly minor design details. I really hope you got some input from an aircraft structures guy before 'building first'. Airplanes have near infinite ways they can kill you; don't offer them options of your own.)

I figured yahoos will do yahoo things no matter what you do or say. If they looked at any of my videos they can see the effort that’s gone into it. And that’s pretty much how I built Frankenstein, I had to reverse engineer most things from an image in my mind, with materials I had available. I know it’s not the usual way of building these days, but this is the way I am able to have an aircraft. To be honest, I’ve had a great time building with such freedom.

G'day, Yay Team ! Very very pretty...; I do indeed, LIKE IT..., a lot. Apparently a Pietenpol Air Camper's Fuselage had threesome with the Undercarriage off a Slepcev/Feisler-Storch and the Flaps and Slats from a Zenith Zenair CH-701... (?) ! And Pietenpol was heavily inspired by the Moranes of France ; If I be not mistaken...(?). What I built was not anywhere near as shiny, but my Fuselage Pod and Wing Leading-edges were repurposed Drill Core-Sample Tray-Covers, bought at 42c/Kg bought as Scrap Metal, and I designed, laminated and carved my own Propellers... Then, ten years after having got my A,B& C Certificates in Sailplanes - my only Qualification..., & after not flown at all in the interegnum , then I did all my own Test Flying.., without messing THAT bit up. So, in the pennypinching stakes I might be in front ? Backtrack me to my "Personal Aeroplanology..." Playlist, to have a goodly giggle at, "The 22-Hp VJ-24w ; World's 1st Ultralight Motorglider ..!" It isn't quite a clickbait title. The VJ-24w with a 15hp Yamaha, in 1984 WAS the 1st Ultralight Motorglider, and the 22 Hp JPX on mine came with the half finished Scratch-built project I'd bought in 1990... But, yeah, you did a very nice job. Now, Never ever try to take off Downwind ; And if you stick to THAT plan, You should have many happy hours Levitating within What thou hast Wrought ! Keep on keepin' on, Stay safe ;-p Ciao !

Written around Ron Wheeler's 1975 3rd (pre-production, it turned out) Skycraft Scout with an 8 Hp "Pixie Minor (VC-120 Lawnmower, with delusions of grandeur)...; which he showed the old DOT in January 1976. If the Bureaucrats hadn't repealed it, I'd be rebuilding the Jensen, now ; with a 6,000 Watt Motor and a 2.3 Kw/Hr Battery & Speed Controller from my Talaria Sting (L1-e) road-registered Chook-Chaser. But since the RAAA gazumped the AUF (who had themselves staged a Paperwork Coup to take over the old Minimum Aircraft Flyers' Association...) The Ultralight Community in Oz appears to have to withered on an the Vine. A shame, that. An Electric Ultralight Motorglider using off-the-shelf Motocross Components, including 4-stage Regenerative braking...; means I could take off, climb into a Thermal, switch off to soar my way up to Cloudbase..., and then come back down as a 450 pound Freeflight Wind-Turbine - recharging the Battery all the way down to the Circuit-Joining Area. But. The Fatter, Faster, Heavier, Insurable and Finance-able Brigade, who were basically all too unfit or too poor for General Aviation..., took 40 years to do it - but they killed off ANO-95.10 And my first Aeroplane hangs in the National TransportationMuseum, but I'd bet in deep shit if I rebuilt my second one and electrified it. Kind of like a metalised open cockpit cub. Can you fly from the front? Reconfigure that gear a little more forward to compensate? Cool plane.

I figured yahoos will do yahoo things no matter what you do or say. If they looked at any of my videos they can see the effort that’s gone into it. And that’s pretty much how I built Frankenstein, I had to reverse engineer most things from an image in my mind, with materials I had available. I know it’s not the usual way of building these days, but this is the way I am able to have an aircraft. To be honest, I’ve had a great time building with such freedom.

Thanks mate. I am trying to resist going nuts with the polishing. I need to fly it! AirVenture is a bit too far away for me this year. Maybe I’ll put it in a container and take it for a tour of the states sometime in the future

Undercarriage off a Slepcev/Feisler-Storch and the Flaps and Slats from a Zenith Zenair CH-701... (?) !
And Pietenpol was heavily inspired by the
Moranes of France ;

What I built was not anywhere near as shiny, but my Fuselage Pod and Wing Leading-edges were repurposed Drill Core-Sample Tray-Covers, bought at 42c/Kg bought as Scrap Metal, and I designed, laminated and carved my own Propellers...
Then, ten years after having got my A,B& C Certificates in Sailplanes - my only Qualification..., & after not flown at all in the interegnum , then I did all my own Test Flying.., without messing THAT bit up.
So, in the pennypinching stakes I might be in front ?

Minimum Aircraft Flyers' Association...)

An Electric Ultralight Motorglider using off-the-shelf Motocross Components, including 4-stage Regenerative braking...; means I could take off, climb into a Thermal, switch off to soar my way up to Cloudbase..., and then come back down as a 450 pound Freeflight Wind-Turbine - recharging the Battery all the way down to the Circuit-Joining Area.
But.
The Fatter, Faster, Heavier, Insurable and Finance-able Brigade, who were basically all too unfit or too poor for General Aviation..., took 40 years to do it - but they killed off ANO-95.10
And my first Aeroplane hangs in the National TransportationMuseum, but I'd bet in deep shit if I rebuilt my second one and electrified it.

The number 1 failure on first flights is fuel starvation. Please check the carb-finger screen and any other filters often. Good luck to ya....
