If I only have to put in 6 nails and I'm hiking with a lot of other gear the signals hammer is great. I mostly use the hammer to bash other things then nails though.
Ive learned that a wild rock is the best tool for camping. Drives in stakes, heat it for cleaning water, sit on a big one, use a big one as a table, weigh down stuff with it, tell the weather w/ a weather rock, endless uses
Yeah it’s good to always have about 20 pounds of different sized nails in your survival pack..just replace your hatchet and saw with them to lessen the weight in your pack
Well I used to work with my dad when i was a kid and if I’m in a situation like this I would hear his voice behind me saying watch you fingers . Thanks man you reminded me of a gold times ❤️
I have a signal and use it everyday for so many different reasons. It’s been my favorite one I’ve owned. I’ve used and abused it and it keeps proving, yours is the coolest one I’ve seen mine was gifted to me so didn’t look at the options but makes me want another one!
We have a small piece of land and the Signal is useful to tap in loose nails on the wooden gates. And fixing wire fencing etc. There are specific tools for everything but carrying fencing pliers,a knife, basic screwdriver and a hammer around with me every time I step out the door isn’t much fun. Signal covers the basics
I don't have a signal but I recently got a Leatherman MUT with the same hammer style. I'm going camping in a month or so and was going to use it to hammer in my tent stakes, so I'm gonna be trying this grip.
I was checking out this multi tool about a month ago, I liked it but didn't like the hammer function because of the possibility of impaling my hand on the nail head,I hate accidents and was altogether turned off by that thought but you've got a great technique,so I may reconsider
I think the most useful way to implement that "hammer" is to tenderize grouse breast or other cuts of meat before being cooked over a fire. The serrated blade (something I typically avoid) is also great for removing fish heads.
I've always thought that the "nail driver" "tool" was pure BS. Never really thought about the dangers, because I wouldn't even try to strike a nail with such a small tool. But props to you for great technique and getting it done with the tool at hand! 😂
Finally, after decades of gouging my hands out hammering all those nails in the woods that I totally use, I can do it with my premium brand multitool instead of a moderately sized rock.
Or dont. Just don't!! Do it your way. You don't have to take this advice. It's evident that you are not open to this, and that's fine. Others, however, may be interested and far more receptive than you. So, have a nice day, bye-bye. Now, bring on the interested folks.
i love going outdoors in the woods, i bought the leatherman free p4 instead of the leatherman signal because i found that the leatherman signal was too gimmicky like the firesteel and hammer. i would rather make a hammering tool from wood using my leatherman than hammering with the tool witch would probally loosen alot of the screws after awhile of hammering with it...
If I have to survive I would do everything to eliminate unnecessary wounds . And that is clearly one of the worst . Injuries on the hands while surviving can be lethal
Leatherman should have included this video in showing how to utilize the hammer the right way. Luckily for me I’ve been using this the same way you do when using the hammer, the right way. 🤘🏽
That is a real question, can you recommend a good hunting knife, not to small and not a machete style either. Our are you not allowed legally to actually name one brand? I only ask because you have a very good channel, very informative... thanks..
If I ever sit down and thought about it. That’s more or less how I’ve used a hammer for the last 17 1/2 years. Choke up in tight spaces. Hard strikes. And hold the end, reach out for a bit.
I like the idea of the hammer and it could be somewhat useful in a emergency but I would much rather a 15 dollar little hammer you can get at the store.
Driving nails? It’s marketed as a camping multi tool and I’ve only seen it used in their ads to drive stakes. I don’t think they intended it for the construction site lol
@@maxlvledc Well, not the same as it would be less likely to bury the blunt side of a stake in your hand much less miss it lol. You’ll be giving up a lot of driving force using your way. That may be acceptable if you’re using your Leatherman Signal to build cabinets… but maybe not so great for driving large tent stakes into tough terrain.
If you could find a a 2" circular rock, would make a good buffer, but, also, might as well keep looking for a bigger rock and use that as the hammer, but, then, could always keep looking for a stick and use lashings and make a hammer, but, also, could walk a little further to the hardware store........
For example, using it to hammer down a notch in your axe head when fixing is needed, or you could hammer down your self made anker points for your tent, bushcraft some wooden nails to like hammer it down making something... Use your inmagination, its not only for nails
Decent tip. I still believe a stone would be safer and perhaps a little more effective. Regardless, nice tool.
Agreed 100% but most ppl have never even tried using a stone for anything believe it or not.

the problem with stones is that they chip and become inconsistent

Literally was on my way to say how often isn't there a decent rock available, but it's good to see some common sense beat me to it
Teaching common sense, which, unfortunately, isn't so common anymore...
Sad...but true
That saying has been around for decades, we have to start anticipating stupid

Wild rock. Nice.
As opposed to a tame rock?
"tell the weather with it" I love that joke
Weigh your tent down, silence the snorer..
For when you have nails in the wild but no hammer. Perfect 👍🏽

The exact bush tool I'd select as a hammer way before the smallest side of a multitool :P

This might sound really dumb - but I’ve had to rely on a leatherman to drive in a nail. I literally just swung it like a hammer. Worked like a charm.
I love my Leatherman Signal.
Scissors and a File is needed to complete it.
I have this leatherman. I usually just hold it on the nail & baton the other end with whatever I can find like a big stick or a rock.

found one of these in a ethanol plant restored it and now its one of the best multitools i have

open the pliers and hit with the swivel part. More momentum and more surface too hit.
tried this, actually worse in my experience. and way higher chance of getting pinched in the pivot.
Use a 2" thick, 2' long branch as a baton.
Hold the knife vertical with one hand and pound on the other end of the knife with the baton.
You could also find a stick and try and wrap it around so it looks like a hammer

Using the signal like a hammer jacks up the locking mechanism. It can slightly alter the angle. Happened to me.
So simple but not something you'd think about until you hit the nail with your hand 😂 great tip 👍

I guess I love my leatherman signal it put this short in my algorithm, you earned a sub and a like 💪🤙😂😂

Sadly...Leatherman needs this..their marketing team is terrible
They should have added some loops in there so you could try lashing it to a stick as a makeshift handle
Also, if you have or can get cordage, you could secure it to a stick.
absolutely nailed it on this one
Great tip 👍. Still rocking Swiss army though.
Judging by the 5 other nails in that log this guy had a few practice takes or just really liked hammering nails with a leathermen.

Where can I get different blade or tools for my leatherman
You have to buy other Leathermans to cannibalize them
I feel like using it as a base(on top of nail) and using a stick or something to strike the top would be a little safer
Maybe..unless you hit your hand with the stick

Man every video I see with a different leatherman tool makes it harder for me to choose which one I should buy to replace my 1970’s leatherman
The signal is very expensive and niche. Go for a supertool or a charge
Mine is called the "MUT", wondering what the that male threaded deal is on the other side?
Looked pretty hard drivin that into soft dead tree.
Is that blade from Texas Tool Crafters? If so and if you bought it around 2016 to 2017 then I made it.
Nope. It's just the limited topo from Rei and leatherman website.
It does matter technically still. If the tool slips over the curve you'll still get caught by the nail.
it's also way easier to index your aim, with your index finger. i wonder if that's why it's called that :)
In what situation would you have nails but not a hammer?
Hey that’s great I didn’t even think of that
I use a three finger grip with my index finger and thumb on top. It seems to be far enough away. 😉

Wait, does this mean I have been holding it correctly or incorrectly this whole time?

isn't focusing on hitting the nail kinda the point, no matter your grip?
Thats hilarious: the peak of tool evolution and utility that fits in the palm of your hand, but a rock is still a better tool for some jobs!
