    maybe the portal is in his iris, around his pupils, that would explain why he usually has a reddish tint to his vision, evsn withouth his glasses, because the energy is always at the edge of his peripheral vision

    I love how people are asking the same question over and over without even looking at answers given to the same question. First off, he doesn't shoot lasers out of his eyes. The energy that is called an Optic Blast, and it's a concussive force. The beams cause no recoil or heat, but are tremendously powerful, and can be used to rupture steel plates and pulverize rock. The beams constantly emanate from his eyes involuntarily, and can generally only be stopped by his own eyelids, or by shielding his eyes with "ruby-quartz", a translucent mineral. There is your answer to your questions. Both his brother Alex, aka Havoc, and him are immune to each others powers, but he has limited resistance to his other brother's power Vulcan, who is an Omega level mutant.

      What material is Scot's skin that his eyelid can stop the concussive blast but steel cannot??
      Doesn't that make Scot's eyelid skin tougher than steel....?

    • @trevincarroll5978
      @trevincarroll5978 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well the Concussive Force doesn’t generate heat, but it does create friction with can then create heat

    • @LordRhuell
      @LordRhuell 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@devilhunterredIt is stated in one of the books that Scott’s body generates a psionic field that resonates with the energy of the other dimension. Basically it dissipates it harmlessly. This also makes him immune to Havok’s abilities. Since the psionic field completely envelopes his body even a thin membrane of skin (eyelids) can stop the blasts.

      Why do you want more of a 50/50 split? Your channel works well and has a large following. I'd be happy with that regardless of the sex of your viewers. My advice... Make videos you love and you'll get the best audience.

      +Raven Rain you sound threatened by the possibility of women invading this channel. Women like science, too, yet are rarely encouraged or included, rather are actively harassed away. There's nothing wrong with people in the science community stepping up and letting women know that they have places to come where their interests and opinions might be valued also. If this channel wants more female participation, that's their call. Don't be scared.

      I think what he is getting at is that the channel is doing fine and us fans love it as is.. trying to bring in a new demographic may mean changes.. and as any nerd knows.. changes are scary as shit when its for the sake of accommodation.. this channel isnt anti anything but the subject matters tend to revolve more around a male demographic.. there is nothing here that would push females away aside from content not being interested too them.. yes there are women that enjoy science and nerdy stuff.. but they are out weighed by men not because the community isnt accepting, but because most women dont care.. which means to appeal too a new demographic would need big changes. there is no reason too force it.. I agree with this..
      you really want to pull in the female demographic start a new segment.. dont change this one.. do something that females would be interested in. then each side has their fill. but please dont change this segment and start doing stuff like going shirtless or putting flowers.. idk really what would attract more women but dont do it for this segment.

    I feel his iris makes more sense, here me out. The portal could be more of a doughnut shape instead of a flat disk. The iris can dilate(get bigger or smaller) allowing any variation in power output to be explained at any point his history. Also, head trauma is used sometimes to explain why he can't control his powers. Assuming the head trauma is linked to his lack of control, that kind of damage can manifest as irregular optic dilation. This mechanic for the portal also helps explain why he still has eyelids. His iris just shrinks so small it limits the damage to his lids. His lids still need some gene that allowed some amount of leaked energy to be absorbed, but at least its more fathomable than indestructible eyelids. Finally, he would not be blind as light can still go through his pupil.

    The part of your eye that processes the colour red is the on/off switch. Close your eyes and shine a light into it and you’ll see a tint of red. His glasses and visor are red too so when his eyes are open while his glasses are on the “lasers” go off. Everytime we see cyclops close his eyes there’s always some kind of light around him giving the inside of his eyelids the red tint.

      I can see that going one of two ways. First, he might just become ultra badass super hulk.

      He can expand that energy in a single blast of he wants to and then has to recharge for 24 hours. At least that's the explanation I got from the show Supergirl.

    I thought I remembered him saying he can't see while firing in the cinematic universe, but then that begs the question of what counts as "firing", since he can see with his visor or some sunglasses on, and also he doesn't just laser his sunglasses off. It's almost like those portals close when his eyes are covered, instead of the eyewear blocking the laser.

    There is a small error in this video, that effectively negates the entirely of it.
    The "eye portals" are not objects physically INSIDE Scott's eyes, but, according to the comics, hyperthin effectively-two-dimensional doorways statically positioned fractions of nanometers above the surface of his eyes, and are polarized in such a manner to be invisible from his side.
    He can see normally, but due to the constant emission of energy, he is permanently full-colorblind except for shades of red.

    • @Nerdist
      @Nerdist  8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      So the portals themselves are polarized such that light can pass through them? -- KH

    • @muzallisam5068
      @muzallisam5068 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      i was thinking the portals were on his conjunctiva or the white of the eyes. This makes the iris, and optic lens and retina free to do what they do which is providing vision.

    • @ChaosWolf1982
      @ChaosWolf1982 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      *****
      Something like that. Blame a mix of poor memory of the comic and awkward wording in the original post I made, but, as best as I can recall the explanation I read, in essence, the portals don't prevent him from seeing entirely because they don't block incoming light, but the energy coming from the portals, being a constant flow (which is mostly outwards, but some "leaks" back into his own eyes), has effectively caused permanent "screen burn-in" of the non-red-detecting parts of his retinas, so everything he sees is just a reddish-tinted monochrome.
      In other words, poor Scott Summers sees everything as if it were on the Virtual Boy.

    • @muzallisam5068

    If there's a portal to another dimension inside of his eyes, how does he turn it on or off? From what we've seen, if his eyes are open, it's pretty much energy blasts 24/7. So how does he not blow though his own eyelids? Your optic nerve would still work with your eyes closed. Close your eyes and have someone aim a flashlight at you. It's still perceptible, right?
    Maybe the opening and closing of the portals is entirely psychosomatic. When he closes his eyes, the portals close too. With practice, he might then be able to shut them off at will. Or not. Maybe it really is involuntary, and the physical action of closing the eyes is the only off switch needed. Less interesting that way, but a lot safer!

      I haven't read the comics in about 10 years so I don't know if this has changed or not, but in previous comics there was some indication that his own body was immune to his optic blasts. I seem to recall a scene where he covered his eyes with his hands and instead of blowing his hands off, the energy blasted from between his fingers in different directions. So the portals are always open, but his eyelids are immune to the energy blast.

    • @MickeyCuervo36
      @MickeyCuervo36 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      JuliusKing As to that, the glasses and visor are both made from ruby quartz. The crystaline structure serves to refract and focus the beams of energy, much like a laser beam. There's a focusing dial on the visor that lets Scott adjust the intensity of of the energy beam, maybe like the aperture in a camera.

      Cyclops's body is naturally immune to the force of his own beams.[135] His mind projects a psionic field that envelops his body rendering it immune to his optic beam, allowing him to shut it off by simply closing his eyes. But it's strange the wiki doesnt mention portals inside his eyes.

    Actually if you read about cyclops you will find that his body is totally immune to all the effects of beams. They do not affect him at all. That is because his body has a Psionic field To protect himself from his powers. So technically the portals could be in the center of his eye as shown in the second diagram at 1:46. He would not be blind because of the light destroying the retinas because they have a psionic field protecting them. His psionic field can protect him from his own beams, his brother havocs beams, and limited protection from his other brother Vulcan's powers. And they only work against those powers. So if the portals were in the center of his eyes he would be totally fine.

    Why not this? Portal opens from the gap between eye lids. And when they part (open eyes) the portal opens. This would make the laser on the outside of the eye and not blast energy through them. So, to explain the visor, special dual layer lenses are used to dull the energy so they are blocked like a super UV blocker but allows his vision to see through the goggles. when the back layer is opened, it allows the laser to penetrate the front lens that allows the energy through.
    Because science ;)

    Perhaps Cyclops's visor acts somewhat like a capacitor in that it momentarily stores the energy from his optic blasts, then re-emits it a split-second later in a constant, directional stream. This could overcome the eye's micro-movement aiming problem since the visor isn't moving like his eyes. Or he has a mutation.

    At various times, in various places (the comics and the first animated series come to mind), it's been stated that all he sees is red. It could be that as the light leaves his eyes, they don't remain in his blind spot. They aren't really like lasers--since they don't generate heat and don't fire as a beam--but rather more like the light of a flashlight, fanning outward in a given direction from an isolated point. Though, unlike light, they strike a person with a significant amount of force. (Hence why they're called 'optic blasts'.)

    Dumb concept: due to his eye mutation, he can't actually see in the same wavelength as his eyebeams, only seeing colors on the more blue end of the spectrum. As for the micro-adjustments, simple: Scott's eyebeams don't come out in a straight line, they come out in a massive cone of energy that covers everything he can see. There's a few comic panels where he actually intentionally uses his powers without any kind of focuser or glasses, and basically everything goes red for a panel and anything in an arc in front of him is practically obliterated (honestly, some of my favorite panels).

      so wolverine have the worst case of psoriasis, and he could not move because of the thickness of his skin , the only way this is not happening is that the healing triggers when he takes damage, self controlled healing, wolverine would die if all his cells work at that rate always, or at least have a lot of health problems, all the energy that the cells use at that speed will consume all the fat muscle and glucose in hours, but thats not your question, i think he wont shed more than a normal person, the skin you shed is the dead skin after a cycle of life, the skin cell divides and changes, you in your epidermis have 5 layers of skin in different stages, in psoriasis, the cells divide faster but dont change and fall that fast so you end with a thicker skin, probably thats what happen if wolverine keep that rate all the time.

    I've tried to fully explore the science behind Cyclops's optic blast but I given up because there are too many contridictions.Like,if hes blast is concusive force,witch is why it pushes things away and doesn't burn them,but if its pure kinetic energy then how can hes body be "immune" to hes own blast,it makes no sence the only way to be immune to kinetic energy is to be made of adamantium.Another thing is that it should not be abble to be focused with eye lenses if its concusive force I've also seen it bounce of mirrors witch agian makes no sence if its kinetic energy,its not like you can reflect the blast of a bomb with a mirror.

    • @vitorkiguchi4670
      @vitorkiguchi4670 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Couldn't the wave just be exerting radiation pressure? I'm not too sure if you could find a frequency that at the same time doesn't burn most things(as in being mostly reflected instead of being absorved by whatever it hits) but also has enough momentum to push things away (and you would need an enormous ammount of photons) , but that would solve most things except the problem of him not burning his own eyelids (though some comments say that the portal closes when he closes his eyes. If so, no problem)

    • @AssidiousBlue
      @AssidiousBlue 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, even if the portal is in his blind spot, it makes no sense whether it is "radiation", lasers, or "kinetic"
      That's because if it's laser or radiation, it instantly evaporates the vitreous humour and his eyeballs explode
      If it's kinetic, his eyeballs blow out of their sockets
      And that also dictates it being directional - i.e. the portal only opens in an anisotropic manner, that is the beam / force only travels linearly with no angle, and not backwards or to the side
      And of course, his eyelids would not stop either of these.
      Now, it could be that when his eyelids close, the portals close - your brainwaves change when you close your eyes so it's not unreasonable to say that these magical portals dissappear when his brain activity changes
      And maybe he doesn't emit red light - maybe that's just cherenkov radiation as it interacts with the air. It might make sense if his eyeportals scramble the information entered into it (one manner of possibleinformation-theory-compatible wormhole, in which energy can be transmitted but information - i.e. order - is not and only almost pure high-energy particles is all that comes through). Perhaps he has altered colour cones meaning the red colour is irrelevant and he can see through it.
      But then how do the glasses stop it?
      Ultimately, cyclops is magic. gah.

    According to a magazine type thing I read in Sixth grade, he also must have really strong neck muscles to counteract the force of the blast... although I suppose that doesn't count if he isn't actually generating the energy and is in fact just a passageway for it.

    Cyclops' eye blasts aren't "lasers", though. They are concusive blasts emitted in the form of a ray. In the comics, movies, and tv shows, his beam never melts or cuts through anything or anyone. It always leaves what appears to be smash indentions. In the train station scene from the first X-Men movie, there's debris falling from where the blast hit instead of molten girders and stone. Later in the same movie, Toad's slime shatters after Cyclops blasts it instaed of it melting. The bathroom scene in X-Men Apocalypse shows the same thing. When the stall door is hit by his blast, it crumples under heavy force, but neither the door or the kid on the other side have singe marks or other signs of laser burns.

    • @iamsatanjr
      @iamsatanjr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well, I have a theory about how those glasses might work. Since his ability is a mutation, opening and closing portals must be controlled by his brain. And since the portals are opened when his eyelids are open, the opening of eyelids itself must be the trigger that makes the portals open. If you assume that this mechanism in his brain is triggered by some particular parts of light spectrum which are otherwise filtered by his eyelids whe he has eyes closed - it would explain how those glasses work. Instead of not letting through or containing energy/force coming FROM opened portals, the glasses filter out some parts of INCOMING light spectrum that work as a trigger for portal opening mechanism in his brain.
      So generally speaking, they still filter light but not in a way you are thinking.

    I think a better solution is that the portals overlay with his irises and have a hole for the pupils. So instead of circular portals, they're more like washers. This seems like the most straight forward way to have laser vision without interfering with sight.

      Alex Tapia Its more complicated then that.Its a concusive beam yes, but the friction with the air makes the air ignite and turn into plasma so at higher power it can melt stuff through friction.

      semantics.
      you got the idea.
      still, if the premise is that his beam works by gathering energy from around him and focusing it into his eyes, then the closed eyelid would prevent that from hapening, and so, no beam.
      _still_, it all depends on how his lore is written.

    • @sammyscrap
      @sammyscrap 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Facts are not "semantics" - snake venom is not poisonous, your stomach will digest it.
      As mentioned in the video, canon says the energy comes through portals from another dimension which are located in his eyes. If he closes his eyelids but the portals are in his eyeballs, he's not really shutting the portals at all and the energy is still coming through. So I guess the inside of his eyelids are just really really tough? Lol. I think the premise you proposed is the one Marvel should have used.

      Tosh Outdoors What if he and his brothers are just psychic, and he's subconsciously opening the portals that close when he's not "feeding"?
      Kind of like how we instinctually close our windpipe when eating or drinking so we don't die.

    For a long time I figured Scott had parapolic lenses that reflected and focused his optic blasts, which would mitigate the slight shifts in his vision since they'd all be reflected at the same angle no matter what, right? I think that's how science works.

      Keo Jin I've tried to fully explore the science behind Cyclops's optic blast but I given up because there are too many contridictions.Like,if hes blast is concusive force,witch is why it pushes things away and doesn't burn them,but if its pure kinetic energy then how can hes body be "immune" to hes own blast,it makes no sence the only way to be immune to kinetic energy is to be made of adamantium.Another thing is that it should not be abble to be focused with eye lenses if its concusive force I've also seen it bounce of mirrors witch agian makes no sence if its kinetic energy,its not like you can reflect the blast of a bomb with a mirror.

      I would have go back in the comics and research more about his power. but your correct in the area. I have no idea or work around for his powers at the current moment once you start to studying most of the mutant or super heroes powers they seem impossible.

    • @theapexsurvivor9538
      @theapexsurvivor9538 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Not to mention that his power is to shoot kinetic energy, which is focused to such a degree that it converts air to plasma, it's also likely that his eyes filter out the specific shade of red that the plasma emits.

      Phat Nipol potentially, but not necessarily. Mutations both in real life and in X-men occur at a genetic level. It could affect the physical aspect of his eyes or how they are built to better adapt him to use his power without self distructing, but it does not guarantee it.

    • @ntlgtgaming3616
      @ntlgtgaming3616 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Phat Nipol actually no... Mutation is just the deletion, insertion or rearrangement of genes.... The alteration is genetic and not so physically prominent to effect his initial anatomy on ur indicative scale

      I mean not necessarily, mutants in that universe usually have one change in then that gives them whatever power they have. Beyond that, they would have identical human anatomy. Wolverine for example has the ability to rabidly heal, but it doesn’t mean his organs would function any differently. It certainly can explain how cyclops can see with his power, but unless the comics explicitly state his eye anatomy is different than normal humans, it can be assumed his eyes function just like anyone else’s (besides the portals to different dimensions).

  • @EpicFeury
    @EpicFeury 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If the optic portals oscillated from one eye to the other at a very quick speed he could see too, his brain could have both the input and the output at the same time this way and it wouldn’t matter where the portals were located.
