I just don't get it. Wilson has been running for his life all season. He is playing behind the worst OL in football. Yet, he's still put up solid numbers this year. His last game he was sacked five times, but still led a huge comeback in the 4th quarter, put his team in position to make the playoffs, only to have his kick returner giftwrap NE 7 pts and ultimately have his defense blow it at the end. He's the best player on the team. The only way this makes sense is if the Broncos want to go into full rebuilding mode, but given this seems to be Payton's dumb decision, I find that highly unlikely.
The African American commentator here (sorry, don't know his name) was spot on! Payton's offense was so vanilla and he called plays like he had an undrafted FA at QB. At times it looked like he wanted Russ to fail, almost like he intended to use him as a scapegoat...
We knew that from the moment Payton took the job and before he got started.

I'm not convinced that Payton's playcalling isn't the main issue. There seems to be no intermediate passing game, Payton doesn't scheme up any plays to get guys going that could use it (i.e. Jeudy), and the run game just seems unimaginative.

Russell just cannot see the middle of the field and doesn't make his reads quick enough. That is why there is no intermediate passing game.

Ever since Payton showed up he’s thrown Russ under the bus and this is more of him putting everything on Russ instead of his own play calling and his own defenses issues. Russ was brought in to mask how bad the broncos really are and so this not Russ fault the situation they’re in.

Eh, for how much Russell Wilson is being paid ... 21.8 points per game (16th in the league) is pretty bad-for context, they score fewer points than the Saints, Jaguars, and Packers. Maybe it's not Wilson (although his aversion to the middle of the field has resulted in some pretty bad plays) ... but he's now been pretty lackluster under two different head coaches. Still, even if you KNOW it's not Wilson ... I think you still bench him, avoid the payout, and move on. If THAT much of your team needs fixing .. why would you spend millions and millions on a 35-year-old QB?

Payton did nothing the last couple of years with the Saints. He will no longer be able to use Russ as an excuse for being a mediocre coach.
The D was the bigger problem but signing the contract was a huge mistake to begin with.
Defense was the only thing that kept our playoff hopes alive until they got burnt out from carrying the offense.

Blaming the defence seems pretty unfair. The few games you won, in particular the winning streak was full attributed to the defence looking like one of the best in the nfl.
The offence wasn’t good all season, I saw a stat a few weeks back that showed the offence had amongst the shortest average distance to go for a TD but also amongst the lowest points scored, meaning they had less distance to go than most teams thanks to the D but the offence fucked it up or got FGs.

The D didn’t cost 3 good players, 2 1st round picks, 2nd round picks and a 5th round pick. Plus a guaranteed contract. Wilson was exchanged for all that to be elite. As a Broncos fan who likes Russ this is a smart move. It's a long shot to win the playoffs and we can't let Russ get hurt because that really hamstrings us in terms of his contract. The upcomming games are against 2 teams with 2 backup QBs which our defense can wreck on a good day. We could win those games without Russ and if the unlikely chance happens that we do make the playoffs then we bring Russ back in. There's also rumors that Russ is thinking about restructuring his contract w/ the Broncos. I say we trade Jeudy, try to get Tee Higgins (if Russ restructures), keep Tim Patrick, and draft a new TE.
(Edit) Apparently the Broncos front office threatened to bench Russ after they beat the Cheifs if he did not change the injury clause in his contract. This is very messed up to me especially after finally ending our losing streak against the Cheifs. I don't think there will be a restructuring after all. I like Russ and hope he does well in the future. I think the Falcons would be a good spot for him.

Because Denver has been so excellent at selecting QBs since Peyton Manning retired. Russ, though not excellent, is probably the best they have had.
