José and Sara were in the Raval district of Barcelona, discussing safety in the streets. Many of our interviewees shared interesting stories, both unfortunate events and narrow escapes. It seems that learning enough Spanish to ask for a word of advice from locals would be our top tip!

Spain itself is a safe country and Barcelona is also safe. It just has the typical problem of a crowded big city. With many inhabitants comes a certain criminal energy. However, it is more individual offenders and not gang crime. Would be nice if you can make a video about the public transport in Barcelona. How to get around the city with buses and metro

It's actually so easy to get around in Barcelona. I went when i was younger and I couldn't even speak Spanish back then... me and a friend from school just went to see all the buildings and historical places and getting around was super intuitive. 👌 the trains and busses are arguably better than Britain haha
There is many many gangs out here trust me... Theres horrible places at night where if your not from here you have very high chance of getting robbed.(im from Raval lol)
Then you haven't walked in Raval a lot. Sit for a while in Plaza Salvador and then say again, that gang crime doesn't exist here. They are ganging up against you and rob everything from you and people around will just watch.
I won't necessarily say, that I am afraid in Barcelona, but it's the only place I have been to, where I constantly have to watch my belongings like a hawk and where I constantly have to keep my eyes open, who is walking around me.
In other places I walk at night with earphones through the streets, minding my own business. Wouldn't risk that here, better to be aware of your surroundings.
Hola, estuve en Barcelona en febrero con mi amiga y dormimos en un hostal en el Raval. No sabíamos que era un barrio peligroso. Nos sorprendió el número de policías y ambulancias cada día. Al volver a Polonia nos dijeron que habíamos estado en un barrio más peligroso de Barcelona 🥲🤣

He visitado 8 or 9 veces, es mi ciudad favorita. Nunca me he sentido inseguro, pero hay un problema con pickpockets sin duda.

¡Hola Easy Spanish! He visitado dos veces Barcelona y me gustó mucho. La primera vez dormí en un hotel cerca de plaza Cataluña y la segunda en Granollers( he estado con agencia de viajes). La segunda me robaron el reloj, el cual era barato y casi roto. Por mí depende de la zona. Considero Barcelona segura tanto como cualquiera otra ciudad tan grande.

I am a very careful traveler but I have been robbed twice in this beautiful city. Once a pickpocket, the second time by two men dressed in police uniforms who had some story about illegal money exchanges, demanded to see my wallet and took out most of my money notes and replaced them with paper. Very good at their job!!!

Estuve en Barcelona por más 5 años, siempre me daban precauciones de que había ladrones por todos lados, pero nunca me habían robado ni timado. Me acuerdo de que una tarde estuve caminando con mi pareja por el túnel de la estación de metro Plaza de España, me di cuenta de que me tocaba alguien la mochila, me di la vuelta y vi a un chaval cortar mi mochila con un cuchillo, con un susto me alejé un paso atrás, 5 segundos de silencio, dije: ¿qué haces? él frunció los labios y sonrió, 5 segundos más, se fue sin decir nada... nos quedamos tan majos mirándole irse al ladrón como si estuviéramos despidiendo de un amigo nuestro...En conclusión, como no me han robado nunca en Barcelona, para mí es una ciudad segura🤣🤣🤣

Jajaja ma han gustado muchísimo tanto la introducción como el video. En general, diría que la ciudad en donde vivo ahora mismo no es tan segura, pero como cualquier sitio depende de la zona y de la hora. Es importante que uno tenga sentido común y no esté despistado a la hora de pasear por las calles por las noches. Mientras vivía en Madrid, siempre me llevaba la mochila por delante cada vez que entró al metro y me aseguraba de no usar el móvil mientras caminaba para enfocarme más en lo que pasaba a mi alrededor.

I lived at 160 Calle Mallorca almost 50 years ago. I never had any problems with crime. Now, in a town of 12,000 people in Indiana, there is very little crime.
¡Hola Easy Spanish! Yo estudio en Nápoles y hay una imagen muy mala de esta ciudad, especialmente aquí en la propia Italia. Un fenómeno bastante común por aquí es que se saquen a los turistas objectos preciosos de la moto: a un amigo pasó eso con su móvil, pero nunca me han robado desde octubre que vivo aquí, así que es una experiencia que va a cambiar mucho de persona a persona! Creo que el mismo discurso se puede aplicar a la mayoría de las ciudades europeas, solo tienes que ser cuidadoso y no hacerte engañar por el hecho de estar en una ciudad turística y llena de gente: en cambio, eso tiene que ser motivación para preocuparte un poquito más. Bueno, ahora vivo en un pueblo en Polonia, antes vivía en un pueblo en Holanda. Los pueblos son bastante seguros. Cuando tengo cosas afuera en mí gardín, no hay persona que me va a robar. Jaja. Pero tengo en planes a vivir en Dinamarca- creo qué en el próximo mes!

¡Hola! Soy Damai de Malang, Indonesia. Al igual que en Barcelona, aquí las condiciones de seguridad también son coyunturales. A veces hay un poco de delincuencia cuando los lugares públicos están demasiado llenos. Pero la ciudad de Malang tiene un buen título según muchas personas porque la ciudad es muy cómoda para ser utilizada como lugar de descanso para personas ocupadas.

Just got back to my country from Barna and I am glad that I was lucky enough to not encounter any unsafe event. I heard a lot of friends saying that they had been rubbed, and even saw a tiktok video right before my trip about them getting snatched; I think the main point is that keep everything in front of you and try your best to express a sense that you are not the target. All I did when travelling to a busy area is putting my stuff in a bag that can be hung on me and stay in front of my belly, and protected it when walking through a crowd by covering it with hand. Anyways, me encanta Barna y quiero volver pronto.

Went to Barcelona last week, I was fine the whole time I was there, even walking around late at night, however, a guy on a scooter tried to pickpocket a guy I was with at night. My friend who lives there has had 2 robbery attempts on his chain and another one of my friends has been robbed at Raval.
Creo que la seguridad depende de la zona, prq como hay lo bueno hay lo malo, el hombre tiene que marchar con los ojos abiertos y tener cuidado en la zonas que esté llena de gente y en los mercados y en los transportes especialmente y ya...
I‘ve been to Barcelona several times now, 2022 three times. I do photography and carried my gear (Leica Q & Leica M10) all day without any protection - in El Raval, too. Even at night in areas like El Born and Barri Gotic - nothing did happen. I did also use my iPhone normally, so I walked with it in my hands. The only thing I did was taking my purse to a pocket inside my jacket but that‘s it.
Survivorship bias
La "psicologia" de los ladrones en atividades en las calles, en el metro y otros sitios donde hay mucha gente es diversa, pero tienen cosas en comum. Hay los lo hacen por necesidad y los que hacen por hábito. Hay los experientes y los inexperientes, hay los violentos y los que preferem usar medios pacíficos, hay mucho más características do que imaginan sus vítimas. Sin duvidas, la ocasión a veces favorece el ladron.
En barcelona, se puede caminar en las 3 o 4 de la mañana？
Being American, I've had a couple things happen. One time a crazy woman tried to chase me with her car bc she thought I had been on her property 😂 (which I hadn't.) In these situations it's best to just escape however you can.
Pienso que por ser una ciudad con tanto turismo hay que tener cuidado pero todavía no compara con lo que tenemos en los EEUU 🤷🏽♂️ me siento mucho más tranquilo en Barcelona (aún por el Raval lol) que en los EEUU. No tengo las cifras enfrente de mí pero ya tenía la impresión de estar en un lugar más seguro. Tal vez por la vida nocturna, la limpieza, los periquitos...

Yo vivo en Rio de Janeiro. Hay que estar siempre atento o le roban a la persona. Pero a mi nunca me han robado 😎
En Escada, ciudad del estado de Pernambuco en Brasil te puedes salir normalmente por la calle, y pues sí claro que depende totalmente donde te vas. El desempeño de seguridad está mejor donde hay más gente, pero si te ocurre a ir en un callejón, obviamente no estás seguro de que no serás robado. 😁
Además, nunca he sido robado.

Barcelona es la ciudad más decadente de toda la península, de parte de un barcelonino. Ojalá solo fuese el Raval, pero que pasa con Santa Coloma, San Roque, La Mina, La florida, etc (todo eso también es Barcelona), me entristece mucho ver como cada día la moral de la ciudad es más y más deprimente.
Esto tiene que cambiar!!!! y engañando no solucionamos nada.

Soy de Nueva York y la sola cosa que me ha pasado fue en el autobús vacado a través de Harlem cuando un hombre muy gordo me dijo darle mi moneda. Yo tuve miedo pero él no hizo nada. Creo que Nueva York es mucho más seguro de lo que muchos personas piensan.
Nunca tuve problemas en NYC tambien. Los Nuevayorquinos son por la mayor parte amables.

Hi I'm flying to Madrid then Barcelona next week and watching all the bad things about Barcelona is giving me anxiety.. I love photo taking when I'm on holiday and I dont know how I will do it in Barcelona.

I guess it depends on what you consider safe.
The reality is following in my opinion:
- a lot of breaking into apartments
- a lot of pocket thieves
- if you walk by yourself at night through certain areas, it might happen, that someone will stop and rob you. Sometimes they do it as a group.
But regarding violence, I think that you are quite safe here. They rather choose times, that you aren't home, to rob apartments. They rather rob you, without you noticing. If they rob you on the street by threatening you, they won't really do a thing, if you are just handing over your things. Basically they are stabbing and beating each other more in their own circle of gangs and thieves, than the normal person walking by. So not really a danger of violence.
Regarding walking the streets as a woman, especially at night, I feel safe in some areas of Barcelona and the main streets. And then there are other areas, that I avoid when walking by myself at night and where I rather walk a longer way around a certain area, than taking risks.
I personally feel very safe at night around plaza España and along the long parallel street. Even in the long Rambla Passage, but I wouldn't enter the side streets at night alone, because they are dark and give too many chances for someone to pop up out of nowhere.
If you stay in crowded areas, I think, you can feel safe and there is a lot of police around everywhere anyways. Barceloneta is also very safe to me.
Everyone has a different opinion on that.
I feel safe in general, apart from pickpocketing.
You just have to keep your eyes open and be aware of your surroundings when walking.

a mi amiga le robaron la cartera cuando estuvimos en Barcelona jajaja pero a pesar de eso me encantó esa ciudad.

España es uno de los países más seguros del mundo en cuanto a asesinatos, y si hablas de pequeña delincuencia (robos de cartera, móviles, etc.), normalmente si no eres un turista, con pinta de turista, que hace cosas de turista, que toma pocas precauciones como un turista, y con un letrero que ponga "hola, por si no te habías dado cuenta soy turista y acabo de salir de un hotel 5 estrellas con un reloj de 5.000€", pues poco te va a pasar. Yo vivo en Barcelona desde hace 15 años y no me ha pasado NADA.
Estoy aquí en Barcelona este verano y ya me robaron mi móvil en las primeras dos semanas 😭😭😭😭

I wanted to puke hearing "yes, depending on time and zona". When you live surrounded by crime, it feels normal to think that "safe" goes along with "depending on". We should not consider a city safe if you need to chose the time of the day you go out. But I agree that the issue preserves in every major city.
P.S. yes I'm mad at Barcelona for losing my bike on crowded streets twice.
