Kampong Phluk: A 'floating village' on Cambodia's Tonle Sap Lake

  • During Cambodia's dry season, the fishing village of Kampong Phluk sits not far from the shores of the Tonle Sap Lake. During the summer, however, as monsoon rains fall on Southeast Asia and snow melts on the Tibetan Plateau, flood waters course their way down the Mekong River. So great is the flow, the the Tonle Sap River, a tributary of the Mekong, reverses the direction of flow, channeling excess flood waters into the Tonle Sap Lake, The water level in the lake rises as much as ten meters, and lakeside villages like Kampong Phluk find themselves atop the lake rather than al its edge. Buildings ten meters above ground level in the dry season find water lapping at their doorsteps in November, at the end of the rainy season, when I filmed this video.

    Good video. The whole place looks rather rustic. Cambodia certainly has a long way to go in terms of economic development.

    I had visited this place too and it is so sad to see that there are also beggars and some of them holding their small baby navigating in a small boat begging for money. I just can't imagine if something bad happen to them coz the boat is small and no safety float were being use.

    Wrong title. Not a floating village

    • @DonaldRallis
      @DonaldRallis  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Martin Goodef' You are right; that’s why I put the term in quotation marks. It is marketed to tourists as a floating village, but most of the structures are on stilts and fixed in place. Other villages on the Tonle Sap truly are floating, and some even change locations with the seasons.

    • @martingoodef811

    Can't understand those of you who comment with words like: nice amazing beauitful...etc. I have been to that lake as a tourist, very very sad place, you wash and toileting in the same water, money sucking orphanage. full of low slum trap. offsprings of refugees are extremely poor and not have much hope for future. parents send their kids to orphanage for $$, infant clawing on street, child prostition, you name it, one of the many hells on this planet. very depressing.
