  • The Nikon Zf is Nikon's answer to the popular Fujifilm range of mirrorless cameras. But, instead of an APS-C sized sensor, this new Zf packs in a 24.5mp full frame chip. So, should Fujifilm be worried and is there more to this Nikon Zf than just its retro charm?

    You completely missed the fact that this camera has some wonderful tricks up it's sleeve when it comes to shooting manual focus lenses..which imo is something it pairs much nicer with.

      Completely agree! I shoot mine with LTM lenses and they work great and look good doing it with the right adapter. The voigtlander close focus adapter for m to e mount with an adapter to Z mount. Call me crazy but the smaller e mount adapter looks better then any big Z mount one. Plus you get close focus with the rangefinder lenses.

      Also agree. I picked up the Voigtlander APO Lanthar 50mm f/2 for Z mount, and it is a great fit with the Zf. I have a lot of AIS f/mount glass and the MF assist features with these lenses are a revelation unmatched by any other manufacturer. The 28mm and 40mm Nikon AF lenses may not have the build quality you need, but they are very affordable and their image quality is great.

      Also agree! And on top of that you missed that the screen turns into a touchpad when using the EVF. The screen is turned off but you can use your right thumb on the screen like you would on a joystick to move your focus area.

    "Really great camera and a good shot at Fuji who feels way too confident in their retro niche. :D The tilty flippy screen even makes sense since you can flip it around so the display is inside and you only have the fake leather back like on a film camera. The problem, as you nicely put it, is the lens. It should have been completely metal, and having an aperture ring would definitely be desirable. And who wants plastic mounts nowadays anyway??"

    Very happy with the Zf paired with my four Voigtlander E mount MF lenses (21, 35 Apo, 50 Apo, 110 Apo) and (most) Sony mount lenses thanks to the Megadap adapter. I do wish the Zf had the Z7II's 45mp sensor, though.

    I'm very glad Nikon decided to add the micro sd card slot to this camera. I have a 1 TB micro sd in my ZF. It is used to backup my photos and I can record 4k 30fps for almost 2 hours with no issues. I have recorded at 4k 60 fps to the micro sd card, but I have not recorded more than 10 minutes in this mode. It does not mean it cannot record longer, I have not tested longer at 60fps.

    Fujifilm has a vast ecosystem of aperture ring lenses to match their retro camera designs. Nikon Zf body looks great, and I'm sure a great performer... but it will appear a bit odd with most Nikon lenses... in addition to a big bag of matching, relatively inexpensive lenses, I love the aperture ring action giving a full physical dial manual mode experience on my Fujifilm X-T5

    I have a theory that the features were originally meant for a Z6iii. But some marketing guy saw how successful the Fuji X100V was and Nikon decided to make retro camera with the internals of what was already developed for a Z6iii. This includes the video features and flippy screen which I feel was an improvement on the Df. At the price it is selling for I would be expecting those features.

    As an avid Df user it's nice to see something like the Zf, although I probably won't buy one I would definitely love to test it out.
    With reference to Fujifilm, I wonder if producing a rangefinder style camera to compete with the X-Pro and X100 series of cameras would have taken some sales away from Fujifilm, especially with the wait on the X100V and X100VI.

    Totally agreed with many of your aspect, such as no joystick for autofocus area and a flippy screen. As a Fuji X-T user, I'm quite get use to the dial system, actually I even love it. I would use this camera exclusive only with manual lens (as I do with my X-T3 with Speed Booster adapter). But the price of Zf (actually over all full frame camera, except Canon RP) stop me to move to full frame territory.

      fuji cameras and lens are in the full frame price range. zf has pretty nice price imo. what i don't like about zf is the weight, no joystick and lack of smaller lens. I will stick to fuji for the "retro" style experience for now... but the newer fuji lens are bigger and bigger.

    You miss the point that this camera is great for manual focusing (like with the great Voigtlander lenses - and yes, they have an aperture ring). It also has a lot of features that make my "flagship" Sony Alpha 1 look dated: focus bracketing, automatic subject selection (not having to define, if you want to take pictures of animals or people) and more. What I don't like about it is the shutter release (which is just too sensitive) and the ergonomics. You definitively need a grip to use the Zf comfortably. Overall I love this camera ♥

    Fujifilm has their dedicated community and their strategy of APS-C and GFX is working well for them. And unless kids on TikTok start trashing Fujifilm up and trashing them in favor of Nikon then Nikon has an uphill battle.

    • @Moonstone-Redux
      @Moonstone-Redux หลายเดือนก่อน

      The core advantage Fujifilm has is that they have put retro styling and handling in the forefront of the design process straight from the beginning, and the ease of handling just demonstrates that focus. As a company with no existing camera mounts when they started there was no tech debt to work with unlike Nikon, Canon or Sony, and their laser focus on only APS-C for their X-mount helped keep costs down during a time when full frame sensors were reserved for only the top of the top camera bodies.

  • @TheOffertonhatter
    @TheOffertonhatter หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I love the looks of the camera, I don't mind the flippy tilty screen. But the one thing that gets me, is the lenses! Or should I say the size of the lenses. Look at the Z mount range and they are huge! Even the 50mm F1.8. Sure it is for optical perfection(or as close as Nikon can get) but they just look - wrong on the Zf. If Leica can produce small wonderful lenses for their M cameras and have done for years, Pentax (my current go-to system) have the Limiteds and FA Primes that are small, a tad flawed, but wonderful, why can't Nikon? This is where Fuji have the edge. The bodies are modern yet retro, and are partnered with some small excellent lenses. If Nikon could bring out some dedicated small lenses for FF (like the D and G series of lenses for DSLR) for the FF Zf, then they would have the target market t themselves. As it is the Fuji one is the better overall option. It is not just the beautiful body, it is the lens system to match.

    If Nikon were to lean harder into the vintage aspects of this camera and somehow were able to licence the Kodak name for film sims, they would really start eating away at Fuji’s niche. Hell, if they were to add the ability to add custom luts in camera and save more picture profiles, it would elevate this camera into the stratosphere.
    I’m a Fuji shooter myself, but the low-light performance and manual focus tracking assist are tempting me to switch. I would like a full-frame camera for my professional work and it’s tempting me further.

    "when looking at this camera from the top down, I think it has to be one of the cleanest and most esthetically pleasing layouts on a camera that I've ever used" - well, Fuji has been using this layout for years on their X-T3/4/5 - Nikon is just trying to copy that. However I never understood the need for a dedicated ISO dial, even not a speed dial. One of the achievements of digital cameras is the Auto ISO with minimal shutter speed where the camera sets the ISO (according to minimal shutter speed) as low as possible much faster than any human can react.

    FE/FE2 not FM2... I know I know, that is what the marketing and TH-camrs say but anyone who has owned and used the old FE/FM cameras can tell you the same. The Zfc resembles the FM2 more than the Zf, it's all in the prism name plate shapes.

  • @PhilWill903

    Fuji is still in a very comfortable position. I must say, the Zf is sexy, but apart from the 40mm any lenses fit the retro vibe (except third-party and adapted manual lenses).
    I won't switch the system, I really like that there is a ton of compact and lightweight lenses for Fuji, some with an unique look (the old 35mm 1.4 for example).
    Nonetheless, the days are unfortunately over when Fuji dropped new features to older models.
    However, a field where Fuji still shines is their JPEG engine. Sure, other manufacturers also have okayish color profiles and I still remember the times when Canon shooters built and shared their own color profiles with the picture style editor, but nothing beats the Fuji Film Simulation. Most images come out of cam how I like them. I really love the Astia profile for everyday family and friends photos where I don't want to invest a lot of time into editing. And the Velvia profile is great for golden and blue hour, the colors are just perfect in my opinion. And the Acros profile is one of the most accurate to B/W I know (except developed with Silver Efex). The classic negative mages me nostalgic as most of my childhood pictures where shot on consumer fujifilm film.

    Honestly not really a fan of the mode dial. I much prefer the Fujifilm style of having an auto position at the dials which you can rotate out of if you need to set a manual setting. Maybe if Nikon released this camera way earlier when I was moving out of the Nikon F-DX system for something lighter I might have considered it, but now that I have a Fujifilm X-T2 (later going to be the X-T5 once I arrive in Japan next week) and have built an array of lens around it switching to the Nikon Zf is going to be too much cost to bear.

      I assume Nikon will build out their smaller lens lineup in future. I have the 40mm and 28mm. I’m really hoping for fully weather sealed versions of those in the future. I have other S Line prime and zoom lenses but for street photography weather sealing and size would be big bonuses on my ZF.

    Fujifilm has totally blown it by not having a full frame camera. The GFX is too bulky, clunky, sluggish and expensive (I’ve been there). There’s a sizeable chunk of users that would go for full frame if Fujifilm offered it, and the Nikon Zf will skim a lots of those photographers who would otherwise buy Fujifilm.

    This is good competition for anyone who doesn't want the weight advantages of a smaller camera body and lens. Albeit the 40mm is pretty leightweight, the Zf weighs around 700g. The X-H2 weighs 200g less

      660g (battery and card) on the X-H2, 712g (battery and card) on the Zf. Interesting how an actual 52g difference became 200g in your post. Exaggerating does not make something true. Yeah, I weighed my X-H2. The Zf with needed grip weighs 809g (Neewar grip). The addition of the 50 f1.8 isn't a lot more than the X-H2 with the XF 33. The ZF is generally heavier, but lets not confuse reality.

    Personally I don't think Nikon released this body to compete in anyway with Fuji. It was a popular demand and they listened. Their focus is to compete with Sony and Canon. Hence their acquisition of RED. For me though, this body was not a pass. It's the ultimate street photography camera and a great upgrade from the Z6 ii that I had before. I'll be holding off on the Z7 III as that'll probably be my 'pro' body once that's announced.

    Ordinarily I'd say no, but Fujifilm haven't made a camera smaller than full frame since the X-E4 so the benefits of their niche are dwindling. Especially since you can't find an X-E4 or X100 in stock usually.
    If they can come back with a camera smaller than the Sony a7CII or the Canon R8, I'll give them the crown still. 😂

    IF Nikon had brought this (or even the Fc) to market in 2014, instead of clinging stubbornly to their 1" sensor "Nikon 1" line as their 'mirrorless' offering trying to wait out the 'mirrorless fad', I'd still likely be a Nikonian and proud NPS card holder instead of deeply invested in Fuji for my fun and income. As is, it looks a wonderful camera (especially if you can use legacy AI'd Fmount lenses) but they are a decade too late to get me to move back.

    And whats more - i do prefer the FM(2) anytime over the Zf - because simply, it's 1) true 35mm film 2) it doesn't have a silly, cr@ppy looking display, which looks just put out of a 90's Sony Hi8 camcorder. The flat display onto the X100V/VI is worlds better, than this ugly hinge onto the left side on the Zf, it does look bad, for real. And i own many Nikon DSLRs, also 35mm SLRs, incl. F80, F100. Sigmas i series of lenses (all metal build, aperture rings) would look cool onto the Zf, for instance the 35/F2, if Sigma would bring this to Z-Mount.

  • @n00bie96

    i really think the biggest problem with this is the existence of the PSAM lever. i find it a lot less intuitive to use, especially compared to fuji cameras which has an auto in each of the dials (iso, shutter, aperture (ring)). to me it really "breaks the illusion" as tom says

  • @th1649
    @th1649 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This was a much better attempt than the zfc, but it's still not their best. The screen tilting joint is so massive and it really takes away from the styling. And if you adapt lenses that little aperture window becomes useless? They should make it programmable. The worst thing about it is the lack of any grip, even fuji cameras have something to hold onto!
    I'm sure the next Zf will be much better and I'm excited for that.

  • @HR-wd6cw
    @HR-wd6cw หลายเดือนก่อน

    Fuji I think had better be careful, because while their X-T series (like the Xt4 and Xt5 for example) are excellent cameras, they are approaching NIkon's Zf price point, but Nikon still I think leads in terms of video and AF compared to the X-T series and with some rather affordable lenses from NIkon (like the pancakes), YES I think Fuji does need to be careful, but their safety net I think is the GF line and their excellent X-mount lenses (OEM ones). So they are probably fine for now, but I'd say if Canon does release a retro digital version of the AE-1 then Fuji may need to start paying attention. I mean NIkon had the Df which was a retro styled SLR as well (but a DSLR version) and Fuji was just fine. But any manufacturer should really be watching the competition even if it's not direct competitors (for example, Nikon keeping track of Fuji's MF line, even though none of the big three make MF cameras, because it is still an indirect competitor to FF, and since Fuji has been making progress in making medium format cheaper, it becomes more of a threat to FF and APSC).
